As a blue belt who's trying to get used to butterfly, X and half guard, these 'most common mistakes' videos have been invaluable in helping me get stuck in. Thanks Stephan!
Great rundown Stephan. My only question is about staying close 1m20s. Whenever I bring my head close, the person on the top goes for a choke. My current method is to stay far back and leave my knee in between, moving backward to create an angle and keep my head far away. It works really well, but doesn't lend itself to deep half.
Hi Stephan, I notice when you're talking about grip fighting and preventing the cross face you a holding Richie's shoulder and bicep - why these places particularly? Why not, say, wrist and tricep? Another awesome video esp as I'm trying to work on my half guard!
I like to use the lockdown, hooking the leg from the outside. when I failed at blocking the crossface before getting underneath, that way I can setup a superman sweep or if my opponent has an underhook on the same side as my outside leg hook, you can hook the arm and sweep from there
Do you have any suggestions for using that overhook? I play a lot of deep half, but every so often higher level guys will get the underhook. Usually I'll fight to get under back, but curious what my options are to work with the overhook.
I'm gonna have to work on closing the distance- I realize the reason I'm doing it is I associate bottom with "create space" and top as "close the space." That's something I'll focus on this week
Buy his videos thy are ideal for beginners in the half guard. I have over 150 video and his the best after drilling his video over and over, trying it in class and WOWing!!! everyone in class i started to get good at it and understanding more about the position and upgraded to more advanced DVDs like marcelo garcia, robson moura and "Cyborg" Roberto Abreu BUT his is the BEST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I have found that even with lock down you can move quite a bit. If you get to deep half guard with lock down you are already close to an electric chair with less chance of them getting the leg out. I like how the lockdown breaks the posture of the guy more than anything.
What is your opinion on a half guard variant where you'll hook with your lower leg, and put your upper knee on your opponents shoulder. There you can use the leg to keep your opponent from stacking on to you or use it to lauch you up with a kicking motion to either sweep or take his back. Saw a guy using this effectively vs. me although he's lot more skilled that I am. It was really difficult for me to pass his guard because of the knee and he eventually submitted me with a triangle.
i like the lock down no i love the lock down in certain situations but i do find it very easy to pass it... are you ready bend your leg and keep it bent until you are ready to work your pass
+John Vo I'm assuming your opponent has also only recently started BJJ as well? If so, my best advice for starting out is learning attacks/sweeps/defence from positions such as half-guard. whilst you definitely need to understand all the basics, adding some advanced moves into your arsenal will help you out a lot more than you think. In terms of grip fighting it really comes down to experience and strength/size. It will be hard for you to out grip fight an equally skilled opponent who is twice your size you it really comes down to you trying to out skill him with moves he hasn't encountered before. Stephen has a few good videos about omoplata variations and triangle variations that you should definitely check out. Other than that it really just comes down to rolling it out and figuring it out yourself.
the fundamentals are always the most effective moves that you can use if you do them correctly in every combat sport... quick example: the jab. and the answer to your question is YES.
gidva I hope you realise that there are more ways than one to grapple... some high level competitors when defending in Half Guard actually use it offensively for things like sweeps and win matches because of it, so it's not a loss if you know what you're doing. I hope you know that what he is teaching is still basic so it isn't like a thousand moves... and I'll agree that training with a Gi is good.
He wasn't even using the lockdown at 14:10. Instead of using the lockdown and waiting for your opponent to do something why don't you learn some sweeps or subs from half-guard.
This is fantastic, thank you for this. I'll take off my adblock when watching your channel
One of the best channels for JJ period!
Been watching your videos for years, Still absolutely love them.
Stephan's half-guard DVD is a classic. This was a nice refresher.

Your videos are awesome. They break down the moves well and focus on mistakes many other video channels don't. Thanks.

You just made my day.
Ah ha... The fart is part of the half guard.. I shall practice right away..

This video helped me, turns out I was way too flat. Thanks a bunch mr kesting
Hey Stephan, I just started bjj and i was wonder what you can do grip fighting wise if the opponent is twice your size and stronger than you?

Ear by the hip. Have to remember that.
Thank you
@poolboyinla Only for certain limited applications. Not as my bread and butter the way the 10th planet guys (or a lot of judo guys) do...
Wow thank you so much

menor esforco e maximo de eficiencia , cool !!!!!!!!!!!!!
What about for MMA? If you're up close to the hip could it be dangerous for elbows?
Dude?! Who cut the cheese at 4:42?! hahaha
Very good

thank you this improved my half gaurd a 1000% and my recovery is much faster i owe you a drink
Do you ever use the lock down?
damn I was gonna ask the same kind of question!
will this work on king mo or cain?
Thanks
yhea i found one in his other video
Sneaky little half butterfly guard at the end there... ive always thought half guard sucks practically, but that sweep looks good
is the book realy free stephan ?
MUY BUENO
Not as well as hitting them with a crow bar. I'd have to answer with a resounding maybe.
What should you do if the opponent eventually manages to get the crossface anyway?
Then you look for side control escape videos.
4:46
Great
Thanks man as a white belt you don't know this stuff and my professor doesn't teach us how to defend the position just moves in the position
If the dude uses it on me what can I do besides hold him down?
Dang it, I'm guilty of #1 & #3. Tonight however, it will be different. Its all in the small details.
I dont want my head exploding=S *Ordering DVDs* =)
Aren't you giving your neck when you put the ear that close to the hip? Couldn't the other guy sprawl back and get an D'arce choke?
Simple times. 😢
I closed my half guard and he stomped my knee tearing my LCL
4:36 team weak side!!

Maaan! I love you! Huahuhauhaujauhaiiajaujauiaiahuaauiajaiiajuah thanks!!!!!!!
You gettin Darced? Just be aware of the defense, and try and keep your head as close to your opponents hip as possible
Quarter-guard, deep-half > Lockdown
lol, loud one
Lockdown?
