00:00 Introduction to MCV and Serum B12 Levels
00:40 Exploring the Role of Vitamin B12 in MCV Levels
What is the link between high MCV levels and serum B12 tests? MCV stands for mean corpuscular volume, representing the average volume of red blood cells released from the bone marrow in an enlarged state. This occurs when DNA production is disrupted or slowed down. During cell division, DNA is crucial for transferring information, requiring specific nutrients like vitamin B12. As vitamin B12 levels decrease, MCV levels rise, indicating an inverse relationship. Serum B12 tests may not always reflect the actual cellular absorption of B12, leading to potential deficiencies. The MCV blood test plays a vital role in understanding this correlation.
01:58 The Practical Implications of Serum B12 and MCV Levels
If your serum B12 levels are increasing due to B12 supplements, you should observe a corresponding decrease in MCV over time. However, the duration for this transition varies. Red blood cells have a lifespan of three to four months, indicating the minimum time required for level adjustments. In some cases, the process might extend further. While maintaining B12 intake, declining MCV levels suggest a previous suboptimal B12 status. Similarly, the RDW should decrease along with MCV as red blood cell uniformity improves. The optimization process may span several months to a year. Various factors can influence MCV blood tests, requiring thorough investigation. Explore additional resources for detailed insights on MCV influences and monitoring.
03:19 Beyond B12: Other Factors Affecting MCV Levels
While MCV levels can indicate vitamin B12 deficiency, other factors may contribute. In 'Don't B12 Deficient', a comprehensive guide dives deep into the B12 puzzle, offering practical strategies for maintaining optimal B12 levels. The upcoming video will delve into determining the ideal B12 levels. For queries on the content, feel free to comment below. Hi doc, love all your videos. Is mild dose HCG long term recommended over trt.. I feel so much better on HCG alone, much love from the UK

I think that’s the personal decision and if you feel better that is the main reason to be on TRT to begin with. However, there aren’t really long-term studies done on continuous hCG use so I guess that’s the only potential hangup.

Thanks so much for these informative videos. I’m wondering what the link is between high b12 and low hemoglobin. My husband has hemoglobin: 135 g/L hematocrit: .405 pmol/L and B12: 1070 pmol/L. He has had these blood results for years and the doctors say it’s nothing to worry about 🤨. I am certain there is more to this as he has just been diagnosed with osteoporosis at the age of 51.

Not sure of a direct connection between those two.
