I had only seen him in serious roles before seeing step brothers (Gangs of New York and What’s Eating Gilbert Grape). Most people didn’t know him before step brothers, but he’s had a long history of serious roles.
So great that a uniquely American art form is saved from extinction. 'Church and porch tunes' is about the best description I've ever heard for these simple three chord songs - which, for all their lack of sophistication, capture a melancholy representative of the era from which they stem. They deserve to be performed live like this and not just exist as scratchy Lomax recordings in the Library of Congress. Brilliant work NPR - and hats off to John Reilly and Friends for keeping the fire burning.
Never knew John Riley could sing. I really enjoyed this. He's got a very gentle voice and all three sounds very good together. This makes me want to listen to more music like this.
Totally agree. I love the Renaissance gifts some people have, and have tried to do my best to develop those vestigial ones I have in me. Being ultra talented is a little like being a real-life "mutant". Hat's off to Mr. Reilly.
yeah and John said (might as well say) Satan (cause she doesn't want to say sing about God) and that surprised her. But I get her. It's so the atheists and satanists don't feel isolated from their music lol
John C Reilly has such a sweet voice, while speaking too, but especially while singing. I have been a fan of his acting for years but only just heard him sing for the first time on Dijon's, "The Stranger," with Tobias Jesso Jr. & others. So very warm & sensitive, reminds me of my grandpa before he got sick, though I didn't hear him sing very much, to my sadness.
I would swear that I heard Wayward Traveler, the second song, in my church, 50 years or so ago. This is a wonderful group and I'm looking to see if they are coming near to me.
You need only look at the strange mixture of severity and calm that comes over the faces of people singing vintage country and bluegrass to see that it’s a profoundly spiritual discipline
Love this. I spied John Reilly walking in Paris about three years ago near the Bastille. I wish I said "Hello," but my friend said not to hassle him. Now that I know he's a musician, next time I cross his path I'll invite him to jam with my group here in France. Good stuff... Roots Music.
awesome music inside you John Reilly great band you teamed up with as well. it's a good thing to honor the Gods of your ancestor's no matter your own beliefs.
I knew he was a good singer from Chicago but this is fantastic. Part of me wishes he belted out a tune like this when he was the hapless Dr. Steve Brule
Imagine knowing him as an artist first and then seeing step brothers one day and being like HOLY SHIT
Technically that is what happened, no?
Or that incredibly intimate documentary walk hard...
Acting and comedy are also arts
@@rstrid5505 ok, but you clearly knew what they were trying to say

And he did it all without a sense of smell.

I like to picture John C. Reilly singing lead vocals for John C. Reilly and Friends and I'm in the front row and I'm hammered drunk...
No doubt wearing that tuxedo t shirt

Perfectly said.

He was nominated for an Oscar for Chicago the musical.
Not to mention walk hard...
He was nominated for a Grammy for the Walk Hard Soundtrack.
He has a shockingly beautiful singing voice
He is actually the songbird of his generation.....THAT good.
Reilly is scary talented across the board - jeez.

Definitely ❤
Watch him with the locals!
He has to be one of the most artistically talented people in Hollywood.
Seriously. He is absolutely beyond talented.
And he never once paid for drugs!
Not once!
Nooooot once
His voice kinda sounds like a mixture between fergie and Jesus
Classic!
Jesus Rodriguez?

Leave me alone Sarah Can’t believe he didn’t play Walk Hard

Rock of Ages was amazing in it's grace. John was sheer perfection.

God is good and Jesus loves you. Keep singing it, and I hope you will soon believe it! Great sound to this bunch.

I just can’t believe he learned to play the guitar so good. Without having a sense of smell!
Just checked out Dr. Steve Brule and ended up here - just breathtaking. What versatility this guy has! And humility as well.
Could listen to this all day long.
If there were ever to be an O Brother Where Art Thou sequel, JCR should be in it.
I don't think he's ever been in a Coen Brothers project, but he would be incredible in one.

"Dewey Cox needs to think about his entire life before he plays,"
hate to fangirl, but that was one of the most absolutely perfect comedies I've ever seen, and no matter who i show it to , they crave more Cox
Sounds great. I knew John Reilly had pipes back when he belted out "Feel The Heat" as Chest Brockwell in Boogie Nights.
Awesome call.
+WGBH Music With me it was Mr. Cellophane from Chicago. He played Amos perfectly.
+AngelWolfPlays I was beginning to think I was the only person who thought this.
I was head over heels for him in Chicago...
One of my favorite actors ... just happens to be a great folk musician as well. How can you not love John C Reilly?!!!
I have needed this ever since I first heard him singing on Dewey Cox.

what the what.. how have i missed Reilly playing old time music and Americana music like a pro over the last several years?! very cool
They did great considering there was no room for activities.
No powers tools either
This comment deserves so much more.
Plays the guitar pretty well for not having a sense of smell either.
Wow John Reilly actually has a really great singing voice. I didn't even know he played music! Heard him talk about it on the Maron podcast..
Dynamics being leveraged in music is a beautiful thing, and seems to be a dwindling art. So good to see.
This is good music in a day where authentic music is becoming hard to find.

John C Reilly is not only a masterful artist but a god damn national treasure

John is one is probably in the top 20 of my favorite humans that I don't personally know.
Im getting Jeff Tweedy vibes on John, not only in the physical sense, but also in his manners and his singing. Love him.
I've never been into this type of music, but I enjoyed this immensely. The harmonies were beautiful. And I had no idea John C. Reilly could sing.
Reilly does two songs on an album of sea shanties called "Rogues Gallery", the whole album is amazing, his are particularly great.

Sounding great John. Do good, feel good. Cheers.
Truly a fantastic sound - good luck to these folks on their tour.

Dr. Brule is a man of so many talents.
Jhon C. Riley. I've had a crush on him for years. Funny= love for me. Along with singing and playing guitar. My heart is stolen away..lol!
The more I see John C. Reilly contents, it is impossible not to love this guy..
He did it... he’s double great
I didn’t know he was a musician. Very nice harmonies. I enjoyed the performance.
I just wish that no one would have to apologize for singing about faith or our Lord.
