The French teams were given the weekend off to prepare for their European games. You didnt comment on the foul on Watkins which the ref waved away and VAR never even bothered with. Obvious penalty --- to nearly everyone.

I'm unsure from where a good number of people got the idea that Lille weren't a particularly skilful team? The top French league has some good teams apart from PSG.
Anyway we now have a really tough gig next week.
It's quite apparent, as the season has progressed,that our squad was very thin. It has amazed me how the team has battled and we should give them the utmost praise for all their efforts.

At 2-0 & given a VAR decision we should of gone for the jugular for the third goal ! Lille are a decent side, and will cause us problems in the 2nd leg. I thought Carlos had a very poor game, and perhaps Lenglet would be a better option next Thursday. Great analysis Pete as always, UTV. 😊

Reminded you of us… me too. After 15 minutes kept saying to myself they look just like us before we tired around Christmastime. I thought we did very well to come away with the win….we are relying increasingly on the repeatability and robustness of our ( wonderfully coached) system to overcome fatigue and injuries …many players clearly out of gas, particularly mentally. The fantastic journey continues though and I’m confident it will end well.

I have the feeling that if we are going to progress then we will need one of our best performances of the season. I thought they were one of the best teams we've faced all year and we were somewhat lucky to get off the field with a lead.

Thankfully we edged what was an even game. Still think we are punching above our weight in the PL and of course still going strong in the ECL - all without Mings, Buendia, Kamara & Ramsey. The lads have done us proud.
By the way I also thought that Ollie Watkins was bumped off the ball in the penalty area and the referee should have been sent to the screen by VAR for a long hard second view - looking on live from the Doug Ellis upper stand I thought it was a penalty.

I'd like to think lille have the same fear of us because I would with our forward line ..European football is not a cake walk and we should take a victory and its psychological advantages it brings ..small mistakes cost us but in general I was quite happy with the performance before the subs came on..12 yrs old in .1983 villa v juventus I had the match program and we faced a mighty Team but we had belief and got close to a consecutive semi final..the press are skewing the reality of European football with an expectancy of victory for the EPL teams..when we know cup comp has no formula its always on the day ..peace

Stone wall penalty and I’ve shown it to other teams fans and all agree, ref was pretty useless at times.
Far too slow in possession, they had more possession than us and moved it around a lot quicker
49 goals against, in the Premier league alone....tells us all, our poor defending hasn't come out of the blue.🤔
Crosses are rarely dealt with by our central defenders, and the stopping of the initial cross coming in ....no where near enough effort to block it....

BUT, one way we can help our defence is by our midfielder helping out a lot more, near the beginning of the season they seemed to work a lot harder to cut out, or somply stop the the ball getting to their wide men....that is simply not happening, anywhere near enough.
When we don't have the ball, it's the responsibility of all the team to defend, and win the back.Not happening much at all.
We need to improve, NOW.

Our CBs just arent good with set pieces. We need mings back but hes gonna probably have lost a yard when he comes back which worries me with the new offside rule. But when mings is back it should improbe our gA from set pieces.

I can’t get into a positive mind set about Villa anymore 😢 it’s killing me because I know the edginess from the fans isn’t helping the players.
I thought they were a better team than us.......and..... away to them Is going to be as bad as playing Real Madrid
same mistakes- so is that on Emery..
Some of these are the same that saw off two other managers and some are looking tired and slow and lacking movement badly
think players are just running out of steam a bit. Shame really but still believe in them
If Watkins wasn't so greedy in box, and played EASY passes to teamates, we would have scored 4 and tie wud be over! His increasing Selfishness in box chasing goal tally over team at times reminds me of Mo Salah levels of Selfishness never passing to Mane, or Anyone! Even when they better positioned to score! Lets not eulogise Watkins, as Keano says!! It's his Job to score! But also get his head up and pass at times! This tie is NOT over by a long way now!!🤔
