He walked away,like NEEM KAROLI BABA,from a top position of authority at a monestary,because he had not yet realized the highest SAMADHI.
Taught Sri Ramakrishna how to cut thru his attachment to MA KALI,S form&merge into the formless Brahman.He accomplished this monumental task in 3 days.
Finally returned to the monestary to train monks of his order for many years.
Who does that in the west.?Walk away from a plum key position in a church to get a deeper insight,beyond where the EGO can feel its sense of satisfaction, that ultimately results in a dead end.

Some of the comments below are unwarranted. We, the ordinary mortals, should not pass judgment. Sri Ramakrishna was not very literate but high and mighty of the day like Keshab Chandra Sen were his devotees. As Sri Vivekananda (who was a worshipper of formless Brahman ) said"" if you can produce one saint like him, invent few more gods(with form), it is really worth it"". That sums up everything
Sri Ramakrishna did Shakti Sanchara(transferring spiritual powers) to Sri Vivekananda. What Sri Vivekananda accomplished was entirely due to his Guru's grace .

I was born Christian and Jesus Christ came to me in the Himalayas in Gangotri. I was not praying. I was gripped by fear crossing over a fallen tree bridge over a tributary of the Ganga. I found myself in the fetal position, hopeless and tormented. His presence was upon me and instructed me to rise and cross the river. I followed instructions and crossed confidently. When I got to the other side and realized what happened I uttered "Hail Holy Jesus, I will never forget you. I went on up to Topovan. I have some leg nerve compression and really had no business to be walking the mountains. I slept in a shelter. On my return to Gangotri and ready to descend back to Rishikesh, some naked sadhus grabbed hold of me and would not release me amidst my protests. One took hold of my head and forced me to look into the eyes of a very malnourished yogi on the ground. From his eyes emitted great light and and light was trying to escape from all around Him. A river of light was forcing its way right through Him and He was laughing in Bliss, unable to control the Light that was overpowering Him. The thought popped in my head "This is what occurs when you hold onto no thought, the entire Universe pours through you. His frame and mind was empty but the Universe claimed Him and I saw just a tiny string of ego that barely anchored Him to His body. I looked at the sadhus around him who loved him as Guru. The Light was so strong around Him, that like a river it would carry Him away and He wanted to let go. I also felt that He stayed and held on only for the sake of His students who absolutely adored Him. I shouted out after this experience "Oh My God" and the students all laughed. I was happy in the sense that the mystery of enlightenment was revealed to me as a simple almost idiot exercise. It was not amassing knowledge. it was simply becoming so child-like and simple that you know nothing and just let go of attachment to thoughts and emotions. the Guru was displaying to me that it is so simple, anyone can do it. I left Him clearly saying to myself "Oh, now I know and I will have to do that someday but not now. Now, I must go down that mountain and go back to New York City and take care of my family. But that is all there is to it. " He did not tell me this. He just demonstrated it in an instant. Ramakrishna and Vivekinanda and Swami Rama and Yogananda and Master Subramuniya and Neem Keroli Baba and Sivananda and Satchidananda and Sadhguru Vasudeva and Swami Muktananda and Nityananda and Mother Mary and Mr. Tolle and Joel Goldsmith, and Emmett Fox and Master Ohsawa and Papajii and Ramana Maharishi and Babajii and Lahiri Mayasaya and Sri Yukteswar and Dr. Cui Yan and Dr. Wang ,,Werner Erhard and God Forgive me, all the others are all one with the same great Light. Every teaching an every road is a route back to your own Oneness. Enjoy one route or enjoy the many. Maybe I delay my progress by wanting to study them all. But I just cant help myself. One time Yogananda called one of his great American young students ---- I forgot his name ---- he wrote many books -- but Yogananda called him "a spiritual prostitute,' because he was secretly reading Ramakrishna. I guess Yogananda wanted to keep him on the path of one tradition. I can see the point. But God has many tasty fruits and it is hard to not stray. thank you for being patient with my long-winded diatribe.

God is without form (like energy) but it can also be stored in many forms (like a water dam, coiled spring, steam, Aaa batterry, exide battery, food, in any shape with intense devotion etc.). Students of science know this fact. Basically when you are worshiping an idol, you are projecting your devotion into it. Without this devotion it is just a stone. For the miracle to happen your devotion has to be there. Everything is in your mind.
If God is energy that means god have form ..so god is not energy ...in which form you worship God that will come to you in that form...

Many of dont know that Sri Ramakrishna Paramhans had considered Totapuri as his guru.Totapuri was from Dashnami sect based on vedanta philoshophy.That is why you will find every monk from Ramakrishna order or Ramakrishna mission renamed 'anand' on their name after get monkhood or sanyasa.
For Example Swami Vivek'anand',Swami Brahm'anand',Swami Trigunatit'anand',Swami Vigyan'anand',Swami Abhed'anand' etc.
I second you! Infact Ramakrishna attained Enlightenment after Totapuri freed him from his imaginary goddess. So Totapuri was a true Guru of Ramakrishna and both are unique and cannot be demean.

@@pradip2008x it was Totapuri who cut the forehead of Ramakrishna and in an instant Ramakrishna became Enlightened. Totapuri told Him to Cut Kali into Pieces when she comes in a vision during meditation, And Ramakrishna couldn't cut her into pieces, then Totapuri cuts Ramakrishna on Forehead giving him shock during meditative state and as soon as kali came to him in vision, he Cut kali into pieces freeing himself from Her and becoming Enlightened finally. This is the true story written by Swami Vivekananada himself.

One touched its stomach and says it is like big ball u have to believe me, another one touches its tail and says no it is like a stick, another touches its ear and says no no it is like a "winnowing utensil", another one touches its leg and he argues as no no it is like a pillar, all r argued with each other, So Sri Ramakrishna paramahamsa says "Everybody's sayings were correct", follow Sri Ramakrishna paramahamsa (guru of Swamy Vivekananda) and end the quarrel.

Some so called Enlightened Gurus in this modern Era believe they have all the knowledge about God but God is beyond knowledge...actually this fight is between Yogis vs Non Yogis... Yogic path is different but Bhakti marg is good for general public... You can attain Moksha like Meera, Tulsidas in this Yuga....

Totapuri moharaj also known as nanga baba..who was asked about bhagbadgita by a devotee and he replied that bhagbadgita is a khichdi( mixture of all) he didn't like gita ( always suspicious about it's authenticity) rather he always praised and held high opinion on vedanta( more scientific and very hard) he always preferred gyanmarg or path of knowledge than bhakti( which is more inclined on morality faith etc less scientific)
