  • Featuring leading theater stars, the production Shabbat on Broadway was an inclusive experience that blended prayer and inspirational show tunes - the first time a Shabbat service has taken place on the Broadway stage. Produced by Amanda Lipitz and Henry Tisch, with creative and liturgical input by Cantor Schwartz, this event fostered a sense of togetherness during a challenging time for Jews worldwide.
It began with a video of NYC cantors convened by Cantor Schwartz, who sang Hinei ma Tov to "Oh, What a Beautiful Mornin'," which was quite fitting for an event taking place at the St. James Theatre, the site of Oklahoma’s original premier.
Cantors on this video (in order of appearance):
Azi Schwartz, Mira Davis (Park Avenue Synagogue); Jenna Pearsall (Central Synagogue); Irena Altschul (Temple Israel); Daniel Singer (Stephen Wise Free Synagogue); Mo Glazman (Temple Emanuel); Shiree Kidron (Or Olam); Shimon Smith (Romemu); Shayna De Lowe (Congregation Rodeph Sholom); Todd Kipnis (Temple Shaaray Tefila); Natasha Hirschorn (Ansche Chesed); Olivia Brodsky (East End Temple); Luis Cattan (Sutton Place Synagogue)
Music: Richard Rodgers, arr. by Oran Eldor, Hebrew setting by Cantor Azi Schwartz
    Music Director: David Enlow
PAS AV Team: Oscar Acevedo, Terrell Simms, Oli Jung, Erik van Batavia, Justin Goodman
    Video Editing: Silent Dog Pictures

Orreverant do you know there are hostages you want to see a show go right ahead the hostages are singing how dare you
No wonder the young people go to the other side or at the veery least buy christmas trees

The hostages need hope, strength, prayers, and action. This arrangement opened with a prayer of gratitude to God. Modeh ani is the traditional prayer of every Ashkenazi Jew as soon as their eyes open. We thank God for what we have, whatever we have, we are grateful. Psalm 84 is a continuation of that gratitude. Hine mah tov - it is good when we as brothers and sisters can be together.
Shabbat is a time of joy, full stop period. Regardless of an individual or communal loss, we are commanded - it is a mitzvah that the joy of Shabbat outweighs any hardship and strife. THAT is what has continued to fuel our people.
The Jewish presence on Broadway has helped shape American culture. Against all odds, we are here and our voices are heard. How incredible for every cantor in NYC lift their voices together for inspiration on a single Shabbat.
Later in the service, it is part of our liturgy to speak and pray on peace, loss, and healing; to reflect on Israel - our land and people.
It is the knee jerk, superficial lack of Jewish knowledge that turns people away. Coming together in community on Shabbat, holidays throughout the year studying, learning, and being together keeps Judaism and the Jewish people informed, strong, alive, and prosperous.
If you want current and future impassioned and committed Jews, join and participate in a congregation, observe Judaism in your home, read, listen to Jewish music, support Jewish causes.
Think!!! An event like this raises souls and more $ for hostage release than you can imagine.
The intention behind this musical prayer is not entertainment, it is a sincere statement of the beauty in the world.
      Shabbat shalom.
