L' idea che mi son fatto io e' che , a parte le indubbie conoscenze in ambito critico dagli inizi con arbore con "per voi giovani" in poi sulle reti locali romane , il suo genio sta nell'essersi creato un personaggio , a volte buffo e divertente , ma forte anche delle sue esperienze musicali progressive anche di un certo spessore , seppure molto underground , fatte fin da giovanissimo con i buon vecchio charlie e proseguite in parallelo alla sua attivita' di critico negli anni 70 ... negli anni 80 quindi in piena esplosione metal e shredder si e' creato , avendone gia' le basi per il fatto che la chitarra la suonava benino , il personaggio del chitarrista metal iperveloce e sicuramente con la sulla sua impostazione rock molto classica si e' messo a cercare di imitare in qualche modo gli shredder del.periodo , ma piu' per far scena , serate in locali per guadagnare la pagnotta ed arrotondare , sempre con passione ... ovviamente pur con impegno i risultati sono stati piu' una machietta , pero' richard si vede che le mani sull strumento le sapeva mettere , eccome ... se avesse continuato a suonare in maniera piu' classica sarebbe stato sicuramente piu' godibile ma evidentemente per una serie di circostanze la sua carriera di musicista "serio" non e' decollata ed e' li che vi e' stato il colpo di genio ... questo e' stato Richard ed e' stato bello cosi , noi gli vogiamo bene per questo

No no, it was not only the disease. He simply didn't have the skills to do what he used to do. He used to play all those Malmsteen-like stuff, but never really learned to do it well. he could play, sure, but not those super-fast stuff he insistes to play. He was an over the top guy..... and that was his main weakness as a guitarist, but also his main strenght as Richard Benson.

@@emgex Then listen to his records from the 80s. These are amazing: “Exotic Escape” , “Jaggered”, “Can You See The Monkey?” etc. He was great in the 70s and 80s. Later in 90s was the time, that he was becoming slightly unable to play and sing like he used to. In 2000s and later until his death, it got worse and worse… But a year before his death (while he recorded new album) he was great again. In this case I STRONGLY recommend song “Processione”. It’s very beautiful and heartbraking song. You have to appreciate his songwriting skills tho! He never stopped being great at that!

Suonare sapeva suonare ma era una parodia di un virtuoso. Un personaggio da prendere così come era. Non è riuscito a fare sucesso come musicista serio ma come sua parodia si. In questo è stato un maestro con tanto di seguito. Bravo Richard. Riposa in pace.

Ele mostrava o que mais gostava de fazer, ele gostava de fritar na guitarra, fraseado longos fritando, ele não se importava o que os outros pensavam. Foi um bom guitarrista, muitos que criticam não toca nem 10% do que esse cara tocou.

I think the thing that frustrates me is the lack of right and left hand synchronization. Both are very fast but the notes just aren't articulated all that well, even leaving aside the vibrato. It reminds me of Kerry King, except it's not being used as a contrast to precise thrashy backing tracks. He's playing the same way over ballads.

@Maplesalt that's the difference between a good shredder and a bad shredder, before I started watching Steve Terreberry this is what shredding sounded like to me, but Steve can play well and do non shred style solos too, Richard Benson just could move his fingers really fast, good for him for doing something he loved but he didn't sound good when he played.
I met Richard Benson very recently and honestly, I am touched by his story, I even saw some videos of him playing in the past and yes, he was very good, but I think the only thing he sins is the fact that he focuses a lot on Speed , in my opinion, I wanted to see Him playing more calm songs without playing at an extremely fast and difficult speed, don't judge me for just saying my opinion on this, just wanted to share it with you.
Yup. There're compilations about his best guitar moments and he was decent. Not a virtuoso, not so good probably, but decent. But he gradually focused on this fake speed and horrible melodies with a dirty sound and without a right note even before his unfamous 2000 suicide attempt (maybe from 91-92). Dunno why.

Per uno che è stato autodidatta, ha cazzeggiato, ed ha voluto spingere subito a mille per imitare gli shredder più conosciuti, in certi passaggi di plettrata alternata non è così male. Aveva del potenziale probabilmente, doveva solo mettere ordine nel proprio fraseggio, e cercare di pulire la propria tecnica con lezioni specifiche. Come conoscenza teorica e musicale non era uno sprovveduto.

Sometimes, it’s just about technique and speed, rather than ease of listening: there were plenty of guitarist who were much better than him at crafting up soulful melodies or catchy rock tunes, but very, very few could play as fast and flawlessly as him. He couldn’t do everything Malmsteen’s capable of, but what he was capable of, especially in those years, was nothing short of impressive. In an era where there was no Internet and Malmsteen’s first album had just released in 1983. Richard Benson’s greatest misfortune was moving to Italy.

Personalmente trovo assenza totale di musicalità e gusto. Un accozzaglia di note, suono decisamente non buono e neanche un fraseggio come si deve.

grande personaggio. mi sono reso conto però che è andato fuori di testa completamente. fin quando suonava piano e faceva ritmiche e accordi si poteva sentire. putroppo sulla velocità non riusciva a mantenere nessuna nota pulita e chiara. e chiaramente fingeva con un arronzamento totale :)
