@@Jay-jb2vr Belgian draft, stunning horse! They r so heavy this stall would actually make it much easier on farriers bk and the horse having something to rest its weight while being shod
I used to go with my husband who is a farrier to show heavy horses for work and showing. Im amazed at these small upright feet on such a large horse, its like wearing high heels. I see the sense of a crate but think tying up the feet could be done to offer more support and comfort, this way has got to prove painful and very uncomfortable so its not surprising Ive seen so many Belgians fighting not to go in them. Beautiful harness.
I'd love to see a much more modern stock desighn that is strong safe and comfortable for both animal and human...I love the crush and electric hoof winch that the hoof gp uses on massive bulls ,it keeps them calm and immobilised and no heavy lifting at all for the human...someone needs to desighn a horse version of that.
also can someone tell me, how does the horses heals along with the bars (which I noticed he didn't take down), expand across the back of its foot. He didn't take the bars off because the foot can't expand anyway, not with metal shoes on it.
I used to be a farrier in the UK, we never had stocks like this, or indeed tools like this, particularly the mechanical grinder, but it all makes sense to me!
There's one near me on a working farm in Devon, my boys going off there to be broken to ride and drive 😊 only place I've ever heard having one over here though and he's not going in a round pen as he'd break it at around ton in weight lol they will need that stock haha heavy boy! Lol
I have a question for any who might know. In America the "thing" this horse is inside is known as a "shoeing stock" or "Trimming Stock". To my knowledge in France it's called a "Travail" or a "Chevaux Ferrer Travail". I'd like to know what it's called in other languages so I can do internet research to see what different types there might be in other countries. Help me of you can please, thx : )
+dkeith45 Hi :-))) In Portuguese it's called "ferrar um cavalo", ironing a horse, in the sense of applying ferro/iron, not ironing a shirt...in Portuguese from Brasil, it's called "ferrageamento"...to the trimming of the hoof they call it "casqueamento", from casco/hoof...you'll find a few videos on RUclips under these three terms, hope they'll help your research, take care :-)))
The only thing I can see that I don't like about this farrier is how high he puts the nails in the hoof. Otherwise, I would say that he does a fairly good job of trimming. Working on these large Draft horses is different than working on a lighter, riding horse. They cannot get under the horse and hold the hoof and leg up and therefore have to depend on the stocks to help with that.
That is a cool shoeing stock. The way the rear leg is strapped and cranked up.. awesome. The front foot rests... I've used the oak Yoder style stock which can be a pain in the butt. This sucker is very well designed. How about a link to the maker or plans? 8/24/2015 Edit: Since posting this I've been modifying an oak Yoder style stock to have some of these Belgian features. When it's complete I'll post a link to pictures of it. 3/18/2023 EDIT: Well, I did make those mods to the Yoder stock and they worked perfectly. I was then able to trim the hooves of two full size Belgian drafts for several years with no problem all by myself. But in 2020, the place I volunteered at, stopped their horse hay ride service and gave away the Belgians. They sold me the stock thankfully, but I haven't used it since.
Cool. I saw a real old oxen stock, on a video. I understand that one needs a stock to work on oxen feet. Rockin J Farrier built one somewhat like this one.
@@lynnehuff9659 The main reason I found is ease. Trimming a normal size horse usually isn't too difficult if they try to pull their leg away from you, but any larger animal, like the Draft above or an oxen can really put a strain on your back. That's where the stock shines.

Safer if done so they r comfortable, my boy will need this as he's so heavy! I'm going to train him to lift his feet himself at some point, we'll both cause they r heavy! Try doing 4 of these, I'm normally knackered from picking out my Clyde's feet but he foes like to bare weight on 3 unless I push him off or get my bum and bk under him so he has some extra support also if the horse has an abscess this would help loads! As horses can't stand on 2 feet so when I didn't notice a abcess in its early stages I went to pick up his bk hoof and he kicked out and nearly knocked me out as he hit me right in the nose! The horse has a bum rest and the foot is tied so no metal pressure on top of foot just a strap holding it in place, if the horse is happy in one I bet any farrier shoeing or trimming them would really appreciate it lol though we dont use grinders to take off the metal nails, we use rasps and clippers

hi I wasn't thinking about the process, I have horses, it is just that in this country we don't tie them in that fashion to do hooves...can see the advantages though :)
Absolutely necessary? Probably not, however there are things achievable in this method that are harder to accomplish any other way. Horses feet are made up of closely compacted vertical hair like tubules of keratin. Searing seals these which provides some protection from drying out. But mostly searing helps to establish levels. Especially on a hoof that large., what looks level to the eye may not be in reality. To achieve a tight fit on the shoe and a balanced foot this is an efficient way of accomplishing this. It does not cause pain for the horse. There are no nerves in that specific area of the foot.
This may look rough, or like it's hurting the horse, but it's not nearly as bad as it looks, and they have to be shoed unless they are only going to be running or walking on loose soil and grass. Imagine if you never ever cut your nails...on your toes...and you only have one toe on each foot!

It's in that cage because he's a draft horse, and so he's really heavy. A lot of horses don't help you when you pick up their feet, so the farrier would get tired very quickly with heavy horses. The metal bars hold his weight instead of the puny human 😂 Draft horses are used to getting shod like that, and unless the farrier wanted to do his back in, yes, it's the only way the shod that horse unless he's a gentleman and holds his feet up still all by himself 😂
Fillipa Cloudbell Draft horse feet are so heavy, that even when they coporate, it's backbreaking work. Stocks like this one take the pressure off the farrier. There are other similar stocks that offer more support to the horse, but this one is very well trained and doesn't seem to need anything more.

good work sir
Umm... The way that horse is tied up could make it feel corned if it doesn't like being shod!! Are you sure it's the only way??
It's in that cage because he's a draft horse, and so he's really heavy. A lot of horses don't help you when you pick up their feet, so the farrier would get tired very quickly with heavy horses. The metal bars hold his weight instead of the puny human 😂 Draft horses are used to getting shod like that, and unless the farrier wanted to do his back in, yes, it's the only way the shod that horse unless he's a gentleman and holds his feet up still all by himself 😂
ok i get it thank you for clarifying that :)
Fillipa Cloudbell Draft horse feet are so heavy, that even when they coporate, it's backbreaking work. Stocks like this one take the pressure off the farrier. There are other similar stocks that offer more support to the horse, but this one is very well trained and doesn't seem to need anything more.
