  • Accentus Music's new release on DVD/Blu-ray in May/June 2014: With his very own "mysterious seductive power and legendary elegance" (Le Monde), Claudio Abbado opened for the last time the LUCERNE FESTIVAL in the summer of 2013. Only a few months later, the world had to bid farewell to a monumental artist, humanist, great conductor and orchestra founder. Even in the concert itself, documented here, lived a moment of farewell, as the three great works performed tell of the transience of life. The centerpiece of the Eroica is the funeral march revealing "abysses of shattering dimension" - an "intense experience" (Neue Zürcher Zeitung). This record, the last audio-visual documentation of his work, captures once again the extraordinary atmosphere of "vibrant emotionality" that always emerged when Abbado created music with his "orchestra of friends".

Claudio Abbado is conducting with all his heart and soul and the orchestra gave back the same in tribute to this heavenly Maestro. He was charming and magical. Delicately strong with his conducting. I was so blessed to see him when he was here with the great George Solti. I have never forgiven the Chicago Symphony for not electing Abbado as the musical director when Soli retired. I must let go of the past; but, how I would have loved to be able to see Claudio Abbado several times a week for the season. I miss him.

Undoubtedly, in his last years he was the unrivaled, the very first in Mahler. Of course not the only one, but the first among the bests.

Abbado was the best Beethoven sinphonies performer, in my judgment. I do love his performance especially when he conduct in the Lucerne Festival.

He was totally exhausted, especially after the last evening. It wasn't the first time a performance left him consumed, but this time...it wasn't the same. In fact, the day before that last performance he was supposed to conduct his orchestra in a very short piece to celebrate Lucerne Festival's 75th birthday, but he stepped down at last minute, this caused some worries, although the official statement was that he preferred to focus on the remaining performances. The very same day I was told by someone who knew him personally that he was having a serious health issue, in fact much more serious than on other recent occasions. Frankly, I expected he would have canceled his last planned perfomance, or he would have left it to someone else. But the day after he conducted the Schubert/Bruckner program for the third time without any apparent issues, and as usual the last one was the best of the 3 evenings. He took his cheers as usual, with the orchestra and after the orchestra left, and well...that was the last time he left the podium, sadly.
My biggest regret in these awesome LFO/Abbado 11 years, which luckily I could experience live? That canceled Mahler 8th on 2012...
