I love the atmosphere of this film, the simple characterization, the love stories within, and the persistent underlying theme of the importance of human dignity. Gail Russell is beautiful, with a certain fragile sense of her own place in the town, Dane Clark reminds me of John Garfield, with the "everyman" look, projecting bitterness, anger & hurt without plunging into melodrama, and I particularly like the scenes between him & the character Mose, and those with his grandmother. Social strata & mobility are lightly sketched, and the morality tale is heavy, but not sodden & bleak.
You gotta love it when people say it's slow. You mean it has a plot and part of the plot is to develop the characters so you can figure out who they are and what is really driving them Good movie
Yes, well, those people have no appreciation of language or character. They're used to slap-dash junk that passes for entertainment. But a lot of people are getting wise to how hollow and cheap and deceitful and just plain onerous, stupid, gullible and greedy Hollywood is today. Oh, it was always about money, but not to the extent it is today. There has to be a balance between profit and cranking out quality stuff. Audiences in the 40s, 50s and 60s would have laughed some of the stuff they're putting on the screen today right out of the movie house!
Jim Shaul, The trouble with films like this that do require the characters to be developed is that without a synopsis provided by the uploader you don’t have a clue what is going on from the beginning and that makes it slow.
...a number of theses good films are just an hour and a half long...wow...I am surprised and glad...this film had a number of surprises that I enjoyed...wow an hour and a half!!!
In the UK, these classics and film noir (I don't count this as film noir) like On Dangerous Ground, Narrow Margin, Beware My Lovely and The Window would always be on TV in time for Christmas and the holiday up until the early 2000s. They'd often show them in the afternoon. Growing up, they were windows to a magical era and sparkled off the screen black and white. I even remember the sound of them playing coming into the room when it was cold outside but with a fire indoors. They're still as magical every time I revisit them. Like a comfortable blanket, there's something I can't quite explain about how they engross me every time. Sometimes I think we don't appreciate the magic of cinema.
Gaul Russell's acting is so natural, gentle interior and in the moment. Its really anti acting like Bergman. You cant take your eyes off her. How could she think she wasn't good at this? She doesn't betray an ounce of nervousness that was said of her. Dane Clark excellent too, charismatic, intense.
Gail was such a fine actress at every age. Ditto, she was a beautiful 20 year old and as beautiful at 36. Imagine how she still moves folks 60 years since passing. Thanks Gail. RIP
The hip bartender serving coffee was ahead of his time, trapped in a wrong decade. How can I not comment on the obvious 🤷🏿♀️? Gail Russell was an absolute beauty 😘💜🌹💜😘 🌹!!!
I remodeled the house for Gail Russel's stunt double in 2014. She was living in terrible poverty. A very kind woman. It was like Gail Russel lived on through the life her double rip to both.
Enjoy Dane Clark in everything I've seen him do. He was a one-woman man~ widowed in 1970, and remarried a year later till he died in 1998. He was made for film noir!
I was totally in awe with David Street's singing. He should have been a top heartthrob singer of the forties. I know a good singer when I hear one. I was featured nightly in New York for almost 17 years as a jazz pianist/singer and also in San Francisco for a total of six years. I never heard of him but the guy could really sing. Sad about his life.
This is the rare film that's not afraid to have an unsympathetic protagonist. I was almost wishing he would get the noose when he was happily hoping that another would be blamed for his crime. This is definitely an overlooked classic film.
A wonderful and very powerful film. Am I the only one who sees Karl Malden on the left side of the screen looking at the gallows as Danny's father is executed at the beginning of the film? It's not in Malden's filmography, but it is absolutely him.
A richly romantic melodrama boasting some superb art direction (the arrival of the unseen train was pure Cinema). Hollywood crime films frequently employ expressionistic touches, but as this is a character piece, the impact has far more range and much subtlety. A marvellous paean to ultimate innocence and unconditional love, if a little ponderous at moments. Moonrise received an Oscar nomination in 1948 for Best Sound Recording.
I tried to be skeptical, but this is a terrific movie. I bet allowing a performance by a Black actor, Rex Ingram, as a wise and caring, real Human, was not easy in 1948. Heck, not easy in 2020. Worth the whole movie. A shame such a talent as Gail Russell ended so tragically young. All around, a thoughtful adult story. Highly recommended. 👍

In the tiny community of Woodsville, young Danny Hawkins (Dane Clark) is constantly tormented by his fellow townspeople because his father was put to death for killing another man. When he hopes to put his dark family history behind him and begin a relationship with warmhearted teacher Gilly Johnson (Gail Russell), local bullies try to put a stop to the romance by jumping Danny. After accidentally killing one of his attackers, Danny must struggle to escape the same fate as his father.
This dark drama gives me the creeps. If a woman meets a man like this she should run, not fall romantically into his arms! Movies like this of this era normalized abusive relationships. The man is a mentally ill criminal regardless of his tragic childhood. I'm having trouble watching it to the end.
Leaving aside Danny's father's fate, if the motivation for killing Jerry was real honest to goodness competition for the girl, it's not that immoral a murder. I just thought of the Vedic custom of times past where a fight was customary between suitors. Who got to marry was the winner, and the red line in the part of the bride's hair was decorated with the loser's vermillion blood, and the dot of the forehead as well. The girl felt proud of her new victorious husband, and society accepted the union. People can't understand. They simply criticise and misunderstand morality. They take truth as lies, and lies as truth.

Way above average character study. well acted and the visual effect is excellent. Nice to see Lloyd Bridges and Harry Morgan when they were young!
Harry Morgan was in the movie, GONE WITH THE WIND. He was the soldier in the hospital scene that was having his leg amputated.
How have I never seen this movie before??? It is a magnificent film!
This film is a poetic masterpiece and Frank Borzage is overdue for rediscovery as a master stylist.

A great movie and Frank Borzage, as always, a great director. The beautiful Gail Russell was an excellent actress.

Love Ethel Barrymore too.
Wonderful full characters! Thanks !
Loved this movie. I always liked Dane Clark in movies. The character shows there is good in everyone.
Closing Comment: A movie hasn't made me cry for a long, long time. This one did.
thanks for posting this good movie; just wish it was a cleaner copy, but so grateful to be able to see it
Shame Gail Russel (36) died so young, the pressure of stardom? What a woman!!! Thanks for posting.
