This film is excellent from beginning to end.. The script is intelligent & shows that policemen actually can be human too. The cast is excellent. Ian Hendry & Ronald Frasier play off each other well as the principal detectives assigned to the murder investigation of a model. Jeremy Brett as the model's lover is 1st rate. Peter Arne who portrays Brett's artist brother is perfectly loathsome as is James Villiers as a beloved TV actor who was blackmailing the murder victim. Jane Asher, one time Paul McCartney flame, does well as Hendry' s daughter. Michael Truman who directed severel Secret Agent Man, Danger Man, & Saint episodes methodically builds the mystery to it's climax. Each scene leaves the viewer wanting to know more about each character & what drives them. Give this film a chance & it will surprise you.👍

It shows how British police can sometimes be human. It does not apply to American cops. Here unarmed British police capture an active shooter, quite different than the heavily armed police cowards at Ulvalde who stood by for 77 minutes to serve and protect themselves while their prey was shooting school children. Then it took a border patrol officer to break in and kill him.

I love movies from this era, how everything is kept in the camera's focus, as opposed to today's cinematography where only the actor speaking is and everything else is blurred out. That seems to me more natural to the way we view the world. The lack of special effects means the actors must act (or fail in their efforts) instead of relying on computerized eye candy, which often detract's from the plot.

@Rex T What a strange comment is this! It seems, you wanted to say something nice, but it backfired horribly and tells a lot about your mindset and your supporters. @joseph lemko went even farther when writing "the script is intelligent & shows that policemen actually can be human too." Can be", "CAN (sic) be human too".

Police ARE human beings, that have to do a horrible job, so we don’t have to. They deal with the seedy, dark happenings in this world! Very difficult job

A fabulous Whodunnit, which rattles relentlessly along for 90 riveting minutes. Ian Hendry is mesmerisingly superb as Chief Inspector Birkett - there was always a stillness & vulnerability to his performances - with a great foil in his dry-humoured sidekick sergeant, Ronald Fraser. There are plenty of twists & turns - especially at the very end - some great scenes on The Thames (linking to Ian's real-life love of boats), and topnotch turns from a distinguished cast; including a young Jeremy Brett and an even younger Jane Asher.
Music plays an important part in the film; interwoven throughout, either as incidental or central to the action. There's a very poignant scene where Birkett soaks up his love of Madame Lavelle's operatic singing, only to discover she's a 'wrong 'un'. Rosalie Crutchley heightens the poignancy here, with her devoted sincerity to her 'fallen' employer. The lighting used on some of the interior shots is wonderful as well.
Overall, it's a top-rate production. But it's Ian Hendry who steals the show. A hugely talented, fabulously vesatile, actor, he draws you in with a commanding performance. His eyes alone are incredibly expressive. I think he was easily the best British actor of that era bar none.
My only gripe with Girl In The Headlines is some brief, yet jarringly disturbing, dialogue which strays into 'bad' girls deserve their comeuppance territory.

Great little piece of English drama. I'd be jealous of the Policeman who can drive around in a Jaguar policecar if I didn't know what dreadful car engines and mechanics they had. An expensive car to buy and an expensive car to maintain because it was always breaking down.

Beautiful jazz going in. Beautiful opera later on. Light, let's have fun, music going out. Lots of nasty people in the mean time. Dog gets the best, and most deserving, break. NO ignorant commercial interruptions. Otherwise such a FANTASTIC CLASSIC that it would take all night to line out details. Cat says "Time to hit the rack." Thanks a million Flick Vault.
