    Synopsis
In the year 2022, the vampire Louis de Pointe du Lac lives in Dubai and seeks to tell the story of his life or afterlife to renowned journalist Daniel Molloy. Beginning in early 20th-century New Orleans, Louis' story follows his relationship with the vampire Lestat du Lioncourt and their formed family, including teen fledgling Claudia. Together, the vampire family endures immortality in New Orleans and beyond. As the interview continues in Dubai, Molloy discovers the truths beneath Louis' story.

Lestat saw in Louis someone who would detach from humanity and accept vampirism easily, because that same humanity rejects him, but Louis' feelings are much more complex and Lestat, being a predator for centuries, is unable to assimilate this issue anymore. , even more so with a Louis who is considered the most human vampire of all. So the point of contention between them is that they both have different set minds and this causes chaos in the relationship, which by nature is already turbulent.

what I always found interesting about the death of tenor is how louis presents the story as him being completely against killing like that, and I believe that the humiliation and lestat's way of "playing with his food" repulses him, BUT at the same time he has no issue watching the man's memories of his life with fascination while he dies slowly in front of him. he doesn't leave the room, he stays and he looks into his mind. he emphasizes to daniel that he hasn't killed since the year 2000 and puts on a whole little dinner show to display his great restraint (with drinking from damek etc), but he still has that monstrous fascination for the last moments of this dying man. his self image and his words don't always match up with his actions. and that's not a critique of the character or the writing, I think that makes him really interesting!

lestat treats louis less like his pet and more like his wife imo. i made you for pleasure and for companionship how dare you be unhappy, how dare you not be what i want you to be, etc. it’s very edwardian marriage
also what i want to point out is, crucially, grace never visits louis! in all these years! i remember watching for the first time and how it saddened me to see their relationship turn sour bc of, i assumed, louis’s vampiric nature. but. it’s been just a few years, not enough for his sister and mother to catch on to the fact he’s not aging. it’s not about him being “of the devil”. it’s just that he’s living with a man. the thing is, it was always going to come down to this, vampire or not: either louis continues living in the closet for the rest of his life, miserable but accepted by his family, or he settles down with a man and that drives his family away from him. and what does your family’s love and acceptance truly mean if they can’t love and accept all of you, not only the parts they like or project onto you?

    • @laurab7049

Incredible call on the Edwardian marriage. ESPECIALLY an Edwardian marriage where the woman's family was not in the same strata of class. "You are the daughter of a lawyer. You should feel LUCKY to be on the arm of a son of the aristocracy. Your father barely had a decent dowry and I married you ANYWAY. So be happy, be amiable, and learn how to throw a proper dinner party and to use the correct fork on the shellfish. Otherwise I'll feel alone in the world, the one thing I am desperately running from."

5:32 you don't really see it anymore, no. I mean Louis does still absolutely have flaws and does still have emotional outbursts but THAT level of humanity and self-reflection pretty much never happens again ...because he's not human anymore! I will say that Louis is regarded within the fandom as "the most human vampire" of all of the vampires within this series... He really really tries to hold on to his humanity for as long as he possibly can but as we've seen in Dubai he eventually is significantly similar to all the other vampires. He's telling Daniel in Dubai ALL of the original ideologies that Lestat told him as a fledgling.... So yeah he kind of tries to stay human but eventually he's the same as the other vampires pretty much...
But I think that's what makes that confession scene in the first episode so powerful and moving... it's so raw and human and we don't really ever get to see it again because that is the last night that Louis is human.

Lestat is so self centered and stuck in his ways he rarely sees other people's side of things. He doesn't understand why louis would take so long to adapt to being a vampire when he didn't. Why louis wouldn't want to kill when that's not something that bothered him. Why louis maybe wouldn't want to go or wouldn't enjoy the opera when that's something he thoroughly enjoys doing.
But this is my theory and i haven't read the books or anything, just watched the show.

None of the characters are good or ‘humane’ in this show or books. They are monsters trying to cling to their humanity. That’s what makes them so fascinating.

One of the concepts that I think the Anne Rice universe of vampires grants readers or viewers of the adaptations is how the inhuman expanse of time can shape one's philosophy or belief or behavior. If you live 80 years, then the things you believe and feel should be at least relatable to most. If you live 150+ years, or 500, then what does that do to one's mental and emotional approach?

Lots of people in the real world manipulate by lying or omitting or twisting the truth and Lestat does some of that but I think his character is most interesting in moments like the opera house, when he manipulates with honesty, transparency and vulnerability. I had no doubt he genuinely fears loneliness or that Louis eases the feeling, but even when displaying vulnerable honesty there is some calculation there. More an in-the-moment calculation than a grand plan but still a certain distance from himself even then.

🚨Compare to other vampires in this story at least how he is written in the books Louis is unique. He holds onto his humanity even after he is changed into a vampire. That is what makes other vampire attracted to him. Even though it doesn’t seem like it at times Lestat does genuinely love him. Lestat doesn’t know what a good relationship looks like. (He has a fear of abandonment) So even when he means well, he ends up always ruining things. Lestat is also a brat he always gets what he wants . Even if that means going against the other persons wishes😩 whatever you think Lestat is multiply that times 100.

The tenor scene always hurts me. From Lestat's perspective it's framed almost romantically - but the needless stripping away of his confidence... like any artist watching that has to feel the second hand humiliation. Art is self expression! Every performance contains a small part of you. To be told, note by note, how wrong you are, to be made so completely small, then draining you of life as slowly as possible... it gives me a chill every time.

Sorry that people have been saying things that could be spoiler-y! I feel like so many fans of this show seem to think that sharing information or reveals from the books or offering clarification on your questions and opinions beyond the scope of the episodes you've seen already is somehow okay and doesn't "count" as spoilers, which is no fun. I hope that dies down, but if it continues, you might have to avoid the comments if people can't respect that 😭
I feel so much for Claudia in her rant to Louis...its sad because Louis previously said to Lestat that he "took his life" which is true to an extent because there was definitely an element of emotional manipulation at play when Lestat turned Louis. But Louis was still a grown man who did say yes. Claudia was a child. Near death sure, but Louis took it upon himself to have Lestat turn her out of guilt (and loneliness just like Lestat) without her consent at all. And now she's paying the price. So glad Louis was able to take accountability for that towards the end.
I love how brazen Daniel is...he totally deserved that little scene of Louis agitating his Parkinsons, but I respect his lack of fear or rather audacity DESPITE whatever fear he's got to have considering their past.
I get how people feel for Lestat when he's telling Louis that he was waiting for him to love him and to a degree I also have some sympathy for him. But I've always felt that Lestat's...issues made it so that he just couldn't already see that Louis also loves him. Or that Louis just wasn't loving him in the way he wanted. Louis is dealing with so much repression and trauma that likely plays a huge part in how he shows his affection. The very fact that Louis has stayed with Lestat for so long should've said enough imo. And the fact that wouldn't say he doesn't love Lestat even when he's being held miles and miles in the air, after being hurt beyond compare. Louis has had plenty of faults in this show so far and he definitely took an active role in antagonizing Lestat, but nothing will compare to Lestat taking out his pain on him like he did smh just such a toxic couple. And I love them lol
Love love your thoughts and commentary on this crazy show. Can't wait for the next episode!

On your point at the end, I'm not sure there really IS a natural killer here, at least not at this moment; I think it's more a case of what mask they're putting on at any one point. Putting aside how much Louis' POV and the distance of over a century having (understandably) reshaped his memories causes him to embellish a bit, so much of what makes these characters people is the fact that they are constantly trying on new personality traits to attempt to make themselves happy/impress each other/just to see what happens/so on. The dichotomy between a good or evil person can't really apply because neither thing exists here. The only way to have stayed a vampire is to have had something in you vicious enough to survive being one; it's just in what you do with that viciousness.
On another note, your commentary is fantastic! I watched the movie when I was seven and read a number if the books in elementary school, so I don't really remember what it felt like to start off. I'm /massively/ interested in how everything looks to people who go in blind; you are the strongest of us all.

It's really sweet how much sympathy you had for the tenor Lestat killed after the opera. It sat wrong with me too. In the book, it was two prostitutes who routinely robbed and killed their johns. (It was depicted pretty well in the film adaptation.) Either way, it's hard to watch Lestat play with his meal, but at least in the book he was toying with murderers. This guy didn't do anything wrong. I felt really sorry for him too.

    • @DaysieRose
      @DaysieRose 26 дней назад

Oh. I should specify because I want to make it clear I don't think the prostitutes deserved to die for being prostitutes. It's not clarified until book two that they were murderers so essentially this scene plays the same either way without that bit of knowledge from book two.

I don't think you can dismiss Lestat's explanation of lonliness being hard for a vampire. Who do you share your knowledge with, your life with, if not another vampire? It's not like he or Louis can go tell or show people what they are, because if they did, people would hunt them or try do experiment or just use them for their powers. After a certain point all your friends and family are dead, no one knows who you are, and it becomes suspicious if you remain the same age all the time. You add to that, you can't go out in the daytime, it's even worse, because you only see people for a few hours before they are off to bed.

I know this is gonna make me sound like I'm excusing Lestat's behavior (which I'm definitely not trying to do for this whole storyline), but I always thought Lestat's speech about loneliness was just him being honest. Yes, Louis interprets it as "Lestat had a WAY about him" that 'compelled' Louis to go along with this or that, but I think Lestat can be charismatic to Louis and at the same time be honest about being desperate to not feel loneliness again. There's a lot about vampiric life that drives a wedge between them in these episodes, but another factor is also this, because human loneliness is one thing to feel, but being lonely for decades, while knowing you can live forever, and considering the possibility of THAT being your destiny forever? It could probably drive people insane, especially when you know that any human you befriend or get close to will eventually die for one reason or another.
I don't say this to mean that Lestat's behavior is fine for other stuff, but I think a lot of what defines his character even through this particular view of him from Louis’s side, is this desperation for love, even though he can't exactly manage it for a variety of reasons (can't get into them without spoiling some stuff so I'll just stop here).
