- Gimbals just aren't what they used to be (and that's okay!)
In this Star Citizen guide video, I explain the gimbal changes in the newest Star Citizen release, how to tell if they're on or off, and what the tradeoffs are when using gimbals. I also try and demonstrate when they are best used, and when you should be avoiding them.
Essentially, Gimbals are now a tactical choice in combat: with gimbals off, your ship will do significantly more DPS to enemies, but higher DPS counts for nothing if you can't hit them. This is where gimbals come in: Gimbals allow your guns to transverse (to a degree) independent of your ship's orientation, but they fire much more slowly. However, if this means you're able to place more shots on the target, they definitely make a difference.
If you're in a larger ship, and struggling to hit a target that is evading your nose or firing arcs, gimbals may help you score kills you may otherwise be missing completely.

I haven't seen anyone talk about Precision Mode yet.
Auto-Gimbals may be gone, but Precision Mode has CRAZY autogimbal. You just aim right at a moving target and your gimbals lead the shot for you.
MM is going to push more team play, and I can see having a brawler to keep shields down and a stand off "support fire" ship that just pummels the target with Precision Mode at 3-4km.
That's the role the Heavy Fighters and "Gunships" like the Connie and Corsair need to play. Stand off, Precision Mode, pummel targets distracted by a Light Fighter harassing them. The Connie is already built for this with it's Merlin Snub.

Couldn’t believe how good the autogimbal is with precision mode. It really feels good, especially during ERT’s on the bigger ships

I hadn't been using gimbal mode before and recently realized I didn't understand (or forgot) how they worked. Thanks for explaining the updated mechanic. I just picked up a Connie so I might have to try it on that against smaller ships.

We had this manual aim mode before 3.23. I tought we should keep the old gimbal mode with auto aim big circle considering it is half fire rate now. PS. As the best Corsair pilot in game, I found a very interesting bug. How can I send you the info via PM??

Thanks for helping us figure out 3.23. My initial impression is that it is more beneficial to the users of mouse & keyboard controls than HOTAS/HOSAS. Could use head-tracking, but it'd have to be very precise.
It works pretty well for both now. I would save mouse is better for aim. Ideal setup is 1 stick, pedals, and a mouse for aim.

I usually try to use lag pip when in battle. However when using gimbal target mode I find it a little awkward. My question to anyone reading, if you do use gimbals on large ships what pip do you use? Any setting recommendations would be greatly appreciated. 😅

If I understand it, then using gimbals and maneuvering is tied together? Or is it possible to turn you ship in one direction and use gimbals to shoot in different direction?
Tied together. Its weird.
@@BuzzCutPsycho Just another bit of info using track ir and a joystick allowed me to move the ship and aim on gimbal with out both being combine.( its not perfect by any means since you use head movements )

Thank you so much! Sadly, I loved my hotas controls, but it was always course in the controls, that big gimbal circle meant I was still lethal. Now, well, I guess it's either mouse or cargo runs.
There is a chance that either what you want comes back or gimbals go away forever.

Our modern day military's have automated targeting guns on both naval vessels and aircraft. You actually think they somehow would lose that tech 100s of years later instead of it being improved? So with the new system it must be a big but in my Vanguard warden stock loadout switching on gimbal mode on I lose my laser cannons firing I get they are nose mounted to the warden but they disappear completely off the HUD and the only thing left is the size 5 cannon
the smaller ones dont have a gimbal sadly and cannot have one, only the size 5 does
So im still a tad confused. Next to stagger mode, theres an icon that says auto gimbal or auto target or something like that. As of now the game does not allow you to assign a hotkey to it for the auto mode toggle. Is this a feature thats coming soon or something? cause on ships like the corsair id rather have the auto targeting for some situations.

Is there still some kind of advantage to use a weapon one size smaller than the gimbal on which it is mouted?
None. Dont do it.
havent done combat in a long time, how does it work with duel stick setups, I dont fly with a mouse.........................

Like a size 3 with no gimbals is the exact same as size 3 with a gimbal but turned off?
No benefit only issues. Never take the gimbals off. As a matter of fact removing the gimbals causes some convergence issues.

I don't undertand it... so is it still the best to have mouse aiming or do I have a chance as fixed joystick user ... many years ago i stopped playing it because mouse point and kill was too OP and everytime I ask if mouse is best they say yes... so what this change means... i'm always confused... (I always said to make it balanced all weapons should be gimabled with autoassist so there is no difference between mouse/joystick users and it's all controled by some computer unit in ship... so does this precision mode mean it works like what i said... it auto tracks and assist pilot so it doesn't matter what input controler/mouse/hotas he is using ?)
The DPS is much lower and in general you are much bette off with the fixed forward weapons. I only ever use this to PvP more maneuverable ships trying to circle me.

I wish they would add option do Decouple a Yaw/pitch/roll .. yeah most people wont use it, but some as me would 100% .. simulating interstellar docking scene would be my 1st to go thing to try with it :D
They do have decouple mode

learn to read .. Decoupled YAW/PITCH/ROLL .. if i tap roll (Q/E), it wont be rolling for ever, but in real life it shall be rolling forever until counter thrust push. Only thing C is doing is decoupling your movement on YXZ axis but no yaw/pitch/roll
@@BuzzCutPsycho let me try to explain myself in a simple manner. If you Hold Q, your ship will start spinning/rolling, if you stop holding Q, ship will stop rolling, But its supposted to keep rolling, more you hold Q faster it will spin, only way to stop it is to Hold E untill complete stop of spin. This is what I want.

The biggest problem with this is that it puts people using sticks at a disadvantage. Now I have no gimbal assist but it's also unreasonable to try and aim manually with sticks.
Hopefully the old gimbal assist will come back in the form of a computer blade.

I'm really not a fan of CIG removing auto gimbal without introducing an alternative. Currently, and to my knowledge, there is no way to aim gimbals independently of where you're turning. Furthermore, there's no appreciable way to aim gimbals with a HOTAS or HOSAS setup.

If you dont give a fuck about the game being a "sim" I guess. Joysticks and gamepads are fucked in pvp now completely.
@Mr_Beaubles game is great. Battles last longer. Big ships are stronger and everything is up close now. Who says that a Sim means you have to joust around really fast? It is still a sim but better in my view.

Hi my problem is I got Ion, and i takes 7 hits + to kill a pisces. WTF they did to the game? I then tried MK2 hornet, with mixed loadout (dist.+laser+ballistics) damn it sucked hard... So i tried Corsair, and it shined killtime same like before... so I dont get it. I was maining a Warden, but it seems now a unusable in armo fights ( slow, and doing no dmg) The incriese in time to kill and decrese of speeds makes me dying to being outnumbered without option of jousting out of the firefights to replenish shields.. I dont like flying ships like corsair, and i hate to fly small ships like Arrow ether. I loved Ares and Varden serries .. but now im a bit lost tbh :( im playing since 2017 and now im generally thinking about quitting the game for a while.. i struggle to adapt i guess
Are you charging the shots on the ion?
You had to charge the Ion, otherwise the guns suck. Iti s in a bad spot. Don't give up though, you can crush bigger ships.
so they optimised this for mouse and keyboard use. and completely ffed over all flightstick users.

It's ok. The DPS loss sucks and sticks still own. I would say best setup is now stick pedal mouse.

5 years of progress down the drain. gimbal assist was introduced because everybody on spectrum complained about the mouse meta.
bigger ships where always at a disadvantange against light fighters, now using sticks with a freelancer, corsair, constelation, 600i, even a spirit is a nerf to al stick players. even they were never performing well. i have to use now mouse for all my ships that are not medium or light fighters.....
People do pretty well still on sticks. ESP is borked though.
Hundreds of years in the future and the weapons can't automatically track a target? Ignoring other stuff that make no sense, this is a change for the worst.

Gimbals had manual mode before 323 but gun sizes and damage changed with auto mode being moved. You have to choose between steering and shooting accurately with the KBM pip.

The worst change CIG has ever made. Basically a "f*** people with joysticks, I guess"... people with joysticks will never be able to aim as well as mouse/keyboard and never be competitive.

Use Precission Mode with Sticks. Then you have autogimbals back.
