    This is a speed run I never thought I'd have the pleasure of uploading! Holy moly. This is a speed run of Dragon View, using the Grand Memory Clobber glitch to call the credits from Ortah temple. This skips over an hour of content at the cost of being WILDLY unpredictable. This is the 2nd time it has ever happened on console, by anybody, and both times happened to be done by me. This is the only run of those two that was done in a single playthrough without savestates. Even the TAS was unable to call the credits and get them to play to completion; the credits get stuck halfway through.
    The Grand Memory Clobber is the result of one uncleared/dirty byte in memory being used as a loop counter later in the game. Instead of running the loop once, it iterates hundreds of times, copying and overwriting large blocks of code and then running it. It almost always crashes the game, deletes your save data, or literally laughs at you, but in incredibly rare cases it will exit the loop gracefully and play the credits. Many extremely talented individuals have looked into this and tried to make sense of it, but the end conclusion was the same: this basically comes entirely down to luck.
    I spent ~60 hours in one week continuously throwing attempts at this in hopes of calling the credits. 40 runs made it to the Grand Memory Clobber, and this was the only time the credits played. I am incredibly lucky to have gotten it within that few attempts. I will not be trying to improve this time. I am happy to have gotten a single recorded run of this, and will focus on the other categories instead.

    Fun fact: one attempt of this run actually deleted a save in A DIFFERENT GAME. Pj used drakhhen to sort of clean the SNES RAM in between runs... and after one run, save file 1 was deleted!

    Coming back to listen to this again while I fall asleep. I love that the TAS-so they say-can get the credits to play through to the end, but not faster than you getting slapped by a rock. I’m fairly certain hitting that rock with your face is a pro-gamer move to end them all.

    11:39 That rock knew this would be the run. He had to say hello. Great run though, and im glad this little adventure of Dragon View ended with this clobber. Hopefully in the near future we can see another game thats special like this. Im hoping it's Brain lord.
    But now PJ, we need a compilation of crashes! The women laughing at you when you walk into town and die is my favorite, but we can't forget TYLON'S BOMBS, Warp into Inventory, constant Kefka laugh, plain face 8 bit thing, and true GAME OVER. This glitch is magical.

    This game looks and sounds pretty gorgeous, that ram(?) corruption aside. I might have to give this a try (and avoid accidentally clobbering the memory).

    I might not have commented or anything, but I did stop by for about 6 or 7 of the runs. I might have missed the successful run, but I was there for the majesty that was Dr. S haha. Anyways thanks for the cool run and I'm glad you were able to get a successful attempt relatively quickly.

    It's amazing to me how much effort and time you put into the detail of your speed runs, PJ.
    Then again... I... guess it's "par for the course"? To have to understand the game super crazily--inside and out?

    Found this commentary about a year ago after rewatching a lot of your 7th saga runs on twitch, so now you’re my favorite runner for 7th saga, lagoon, brandish, robotrek, ghosts n goblins, and dragon view.
    Lagoon is the only game you run I’ve never played beyond the initial 5 minutes of “I don’t know what to do and I don’t think I like this.”
    Fantastic commentary as always, especially when the rock hit you.

    I'm here 'cause while playing Dragon View, the Ortah cut scene has continuously frozen on me, and I'd really like to prevent that and finish the game. How's that done?

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  3 года назад +2

      Save the game and reload. Not save state, save the game itself and reload from title screen.

    "remarkable sequence break protection"
    Grand memory clobber takes out like 60% of the game

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  6 лет назад +6

      Yes, and it is the only possible way to skip any dungeons or do any plot sequences out of order.

    • @conoyl
      @conoyl 6 лет назад +2

      that's really cool though, that they were thinking of sequence breaking in such a way, and even more remarkable that you managed to find the one way to clobber that run.

    I've been playing this game for some years now.
    My file always crashes when I go to the dragons roon. Never knew why.
    I started playing this again just yesterday, I hope I don't find that nasty bug this time.
    I might give it a try for speedrunning though.

    • @thedude5295
      @thedude5295 4 года назад

      I just finished it for the first time. I had that bug twice before and gave it up as a lost cause. I did some research this time when it happened again and it's a problem with the actual cartridge and how it's coded, but most people wouldn't have ever noticed it on the cart. Explanation follows...
      When you beat the scorpion, an incorrect value is written to a specific memory address. When you save the game and restart it, it will reset it. (Actually, the guy who made this video is explaining it as I'm writing this).
      Pretty sure the people saying that it doesn't crash in ZNES is wrong and must have reset and loaded with the in-game saves, because I've heard that this glitch will happen on a genuine SNES with a genuine cartridge if you play through the whole game in a single session without saving and resetting.

    • @TheSuperSNES
      @TheSuperSNES  6 лет назад +2

      Yea 100% is pretty neat. I've made a basic route for it but I don't really like it yet. Need to refine it more before attempts. The worst thing about 100% is that there's one upgrade that requires killing 100 overworld enemies, and it takes like 20 straight minutes of grinding. It is horrible.
