Thanks SO much for posting this. Purchased a used car and immediately discovered that I needed a new headlight assembly asap for a trip. Ordered the part, but it didn't arrive in time. This video helped me separate the assembly easily and JB Weld the loose internal reflector brackets and get the burned bulb replaced. It took a little time to fix the internal brackets, but this tip totally saved the day! The oven trick worked easily and got me on the road without delaying my trip. Took longer for the epoxy to cure than all of the rest of the repair! You Rock!

Thank you! Had to heat my stock adhesive twice for 15 mins each time before it released. Also cardboard is fine to put in the oven at 200 instead of the wood block

Oh yeah the cardboard is clutch. Can also bend it up the wall to keep the light from touching it. My headlights are really long and took up my whole oven diagonally soo I had to come up with something lol
Awesome, so are the G35's, so your method will definitely save me some headache. Great work. You likely know, but you'll definitely want to clean the oven before making food.. Dun wanna eat no carcinogen cake 🥴
I had water inside the headlights this was very helpful in getting it done. To removed the water I used a hairdryer put everything back together without any problems

The other ones I say put the oven into Celsius and that translated to about 275 degrees which I thought was way too high. I'm glad I found your video first.

I am 62 yrs old with my husband's 1999 silverado truck. The lights were so bad I couldn't see very well,so need to take the covers off because they get full of water constantly burning bulbs. So thx to your video got to gem apart cleaned them and had to spray chrome paint on the reflector portion because it turned white. The crud in them and along the seam was impossible to clean assembled. Thanks guys

friends..very original and easy..I warmed with heat gun .. I did not like the projector that looks dark the back part .. I had to install led strip behind the projector✌️✌️👍
Yeah? That's how i used to do it too. Neither did Ryan.. He changed all the insides too. Full custom 💪 He didn't end up going with a LED strip.. but he did install something really cool inside. We'll be showing everything he ended up doing to the headlights coming up soon :D

This works if you have a big enough oven or a small enough headlight.
I used a thick cardboard box and cut a hole in it for a hair dryer pointing at the lens. Did it on a mondeo which has massive headlights.
That sounds innovative for sure 👍 i would be very careful about aiming heat at the lens, as it will burn and turn into a non-transparent white if heated too much, but i'm glad you were able to get good results. Awesome work Martin 👍👍👍
@@milsgarage I've burnt it with a pa buffer but never with a hairdryer. I kept checking and prying at the bonding every 5/10 minutes.

Always prepare tools and equipment before starting the job.. You're going to definitely need wood and Home Depot has scraps

Interesting, i haven't customized Volvo headlights yet.. i wouldn't increase the temperature.. i've heard of mainly older cars not working with this method, but it's possible they sealed the housing without adhesive

The wires should be ok as long as the temperature is in degrees Fahrenheit 👍

No thermostat/thermometer? i wouldn't do it. It doesn't need much heat to work, and it doesn't take much more heat to destroy the headlight

@@hhhhhg5232 Sure, the temperature to melt the adhesive is lower than the plastic housing, but without control of the temperature, it's possible to quickly melt the lens or housing. i personally wouldn't take the risk, but i also do this stuff as a business, so i seek to minimize risk

Now what type of seasoning should I use,,I have tons of old bay. All seriousness aside, I ordered the lenses for a 2003 530i with that I'm working on, after trying the heat gun I actually thought of the oven idea, once i strip down the components, they're HID then I'll give this a go, some guys just cut them off, I think mine have the self adjuster mechanism but I don't know if they work, I can't use the car right now anyway because I'm doing the oil pan gasket and in doing so I broke a couple of ribs I think so I can't get under there until I heal, I did a stupid thing by standing on a piece of 4×4 leaning into the engine to get the drivers side bolts on the oil pan when the wood slipped out from under me and I slammed my ribcage on the top of the fender, maybe it's just bruised inside, laying down hurts like hell so it's difficult to sleep.

I’ve got original Hella Quads on my ‘97 Golf Gti. Scared of putting in oven in case housing melts. Heat gun method not freeing up original sealant. So frustrating.

Super helpful video! Question on the adhesive...Do you have a reco on what to use to put it back together? Do recommend removing the original adhesive and putting something new on there or are you essentially reheating the original?

if you have the grey tacky kind of glue inside you can reuse it if there's enough of it, just heat it back and clamp it shut.

I have a 2010 mazda 3sport gs 2.5 that has dual xenon automatic headlights that get too hot inside and got flaky and foggy inside as well as outside from environmental effects... it's nearly the cost of the vehicle's current value to get both replacement headlight assembly... hope to sort out these issues now. Sorry for the delay! i tried searching, but really, the only way to get a lens is to buy another damaged set with nice lenses and swap them out.. Maybe facebook marketplace is a good place to start the search
Great video. I’ve been told the headlamps on my 2004 BMW X5 e53 are “permasealed” and can’t be opened using the oven. Is this right? This method looks cool.
Thank you Chris! Some of the older BMWs had glass housing that won’t separate either.. i’m not sure about the X5’s.. Either way, this method is the most promising way to open them 👍

We use a Power Probe. i’m sure they plug them into the wall, or a battery 🔋 🔌

I did a track hawk headlights were HARD ! Doing Dodge Ram 3500 THERE HARD ALSO. doing the oven thing trying not to melt them lol but still HARD ! Plastic looks horrible from prying it 😭😭

Guys have a tip on removing the “Smoked” paint ? Bought some cheap IPCW Projector headlights 2nd hand. Found out why they were sold to begin with. Can’t see 💩 at night, tried LEDs and Switch backs to help. Nodda Nothing has helped. Yooper Michigan LEDs suck driving in a snow storm as is. So yeah basically down graded from oem

New lenses? So you need them opened and closed, and no modification to the headlight itself? Are you in the Delaware area?
@@milsgarage no unfortunately I’m in SLC Utah. Yes my old lens covers are faded and cannot be restored. So need them replaced with new ones. No modifications.

@@milsgarage it worked out great! I actually did ( 230° F ) on a piece of wood for 17 minutes it came apart so easy didnt bend any plastic at all for my 2006 mazda 3s 322.000k mile thanks :-)
I have a 2019 Jetta which did not allow the separation as you've shown on video, do I possibly have to increase the temperature or put in longer for new cars??
Yeah? i'm not sure.. Too hot will definitely damage the lens though.. Maybe an aftermarket headlight for the Jetta would be easier to open and modify

Hey I’ve got a question ,I see you say to remove the screws,and I’m assuming any kind of metal that’s possible?im unsure of the reasoning,and I paused the video at the screw removal part,so if you explain why to remove screws when I finish watching in a moment I apologize lol. But I have screws on mine that are basically in removable,is it ok to go ahead and bake ??!!
The screws need to be removed because they're adding pressure to the lens edges which can crack if they aren't removed

Hey man for my headlights I can’t take off the cables connect to the bulbs can I just take off the bulbs and leave the cables on or do you think they’ll burn
Take anything off of the outside if you’re worried. Don’t let anything touch metal is the most important part

How do I remove the lense from my headlight

But wher is the problem to warm up till 200° after turn of and then put in to the oven. It will be more safety
My only worry is whether it touches metal, so whichever is easiest.. 200ºF should be one of the lowest settings, so it should be pretty safe, just enough to soften the glue

Can you bake a light with a broken lens? If chome piece inside is exposed will it not burn?
Yes, you can. The paint and chrome will not be affected as long as it doesn't touch metal in the oven 👍

@@milsgarage unfortunately that's not possible, I'm from Croatia. 😬 Trust me E60 headlight is a nightmare... Heating doesn't do anything to the glue, plastic is shitty and it cracks easily...

@@milsgarage I have tried on one and I failed to open it. After searching for solution I have found out that it's impossible to opet that headlight. Guys are cutting them open and then buy a new aftermarket front lenses and glue them back on. And they charge that job nice because it's really fu**** up and a new headlight costs a lot. If you manage to find a easier way to opet that headlight that would be a great commercial for your company. There are a couple of more types of headlights that are disaster to open so be careful.

Unless it's one of those glass housing ones, yes. All of the modern plastic headlights are constructed like this
