Way late to the party here, but I believe the Ruger American Pistol (as opposed to the Ruger American Rifle--thanks for reusing the name, Ruger) was designed to meet the specifications of the XM17 Trials, but for some reason Ruger never actually submitted the design and instead released it to the private market. General opinion is that the gun is at about as durable and reliable in adverse conditions as the 320, but maybe Ruger felt like they couldn't eat the cost enough to compete in the military contract world.

Coming from one of my first pistols, a Ruger P series. The Ruger American was a huge change for me.

I own both, Ruger American and SIG p320 both in 9mm. Both hold 17rnd mags but I personally like the American better. Mainly cause of the lower bore axis

The Ruger American in .45 ACP only comes with two backstraps, unlike the 9mm version, that has three.

I put several hundred rounds through a Ruger American when they first came out and as a right-handed shooter the left side of the beaver tail digs into the top of the web of the hand very very badly. That being said though absolutely wonderful review and possibly the best background on RUclips !!!

I'm a Southpaw. My Ruger American does not bite my thumb knuckle. It shoots very well. 45ACP same gun he reviewed. I've had it for at least 5 years. No issues.

I have the full sized .45 and the compact .45. I feel like they're not quite as 'polished' from a design and engineering perspective as some of my other polymer .45s (Glock 21 gen 5, Smith & Wesson M&P 45 m2.0, FNX-45T) but they shoot great and both have been 100% reliable. No real complaints and I'm glad to have them in my colleciton.

The new LC carbine in 45 acp is an excellent platform, and the fact that it takes glock 21/41 magazines is brilliant. Here's an idea: How about breathing new life into the American 45acp pistol by redesigning the frame to take those same glock magazines. I hope that happens.

I love eet! I bought the 9mm compact version with ambi external safety in 2017 and use it as my EDC. It works great left or right. Interesting on the safety mine is just the opposite even though I use it right handed and my right hand is stronger than the left.

{+}I’ve owned this model in 9mm for a few years and it’s low recoil and well balanced in addition to your positive comments.
{-}It’s easy to hit the mag release accidentally as you grip it. Also, the trigger safety can irritate your fingertip.

  • @MXRUSER

I have the Ruger American 45, but I must have a first run, mine does not have the safety bar, it only has the trigger safety. You asked how do they shoot? Mine is a tad low and a tad left from the factory. i guess I just learned to compensate because I have not adjusted anything.

I have the Ruger American .45 along with the 5.7 and the Ruger American Competition 9mm. I think it shoots great, it feels great and is underrated. As a lefty, I love that it's ambidextrous, has the manual safety to go with the trigger safety, and the slide dies not operate while on safe. The recoil is very manageable. I wish it had a higher mag capacity.

Unfortunately I do love this firearm but the little things they forgot or ignored and the price has kept me from ever purchasing. They have a squared off frame in the back and after I put a couple mags through it I realized I would have anvery beat up hand if I decided to purchase.
We live in a day where finding a firearm that checks all the boxes that need to be checked for a great pistol isn't that difficult. When you compare this against the Tisas P9 Ruger did not do all the simple things right plus it costs double. I love Ruger and own several but above loving Ruger I love true real Value and I just don't see the value in this firearm. Take Sig p320 and compare it against the Tisas P9 and even though the price over double there is real value in owning the aig p320. Same goes somewhat for Glock.
