In this video I discuss the pros and cons of the Nike Air VaporMax after wearing these for a month. I love the overall design of the sneaker, not for everyone, but I like the Flyknit upper and hyperfuse placement. My favorite part is the attached - detached tongue. The large discussion point is the VaporMax air unit, it is something people love or hate at this point. A couple things I like is the responsiveness and how it really feels like walking on air! Some of the cons however is the shoes are very squeeky, and sort of feel like a flat tire, its just such a unique ride, it is hard to get used to, but once you break them in, they are something I plan on keeping in rotation!

Compare Flyknit Racer & AM Flyknit and Ultra boost
When the original Nike Air Max debuted in 1987, it was the first shoe to showcase a large, visible Air-cushioning unit. In 1997, the Air Max 97 evolved the technology by placing an Air unit along the entire sole. Incremental steps followed, and now Air Max builds upon its nearly 30-year legacy with a leap: the Nike Air VaporMax, which pays off the full promise of Air - to provide lightweight, consistent cushioning that lasts.
The breakthrough came courtesy of new technologies that allow the Nike VaporMax Air unit to act as a standalone outsole. Where previous Air units had to be insulated by a secondary rubber layer for protection and improved durability, new innovation allows designers to incorporate the Air and exterior layer into one holistic VaporMax Air unit. And where previous units needed to be shaped with inflexible structural areas, the new unit can independently maintain its given form, with elasticity
Nike designs for athletes and performance first, which is why it wear-tested the VaporMax with the help of 350 people who in total ran 126,000 miles in the sneakers before turning them over to the public
For Kathy Gomez, VP of Nike Innovation, the VaporMax sole was an engineering challenge. "We had to totally reimagine how to make a shoe, as we went from a sort of Air mattress to these unencumbered tubes," she says. "The question went from 'How much Air can you put under your foot?' to 'How much Air do you need to put under your foot, and where?'" They also did away with the rubber outsole most sneakers have in favor of a plastic one made from a thicker version of the one they already make the Air bags with, which allowed them to make the sole more like one cohesive piece. In fact, Gomez says the plastic outsole is more durable than typical sneaker rubber, and even gives runners unprecedented traction
Like most of Nike's new running sneakers of late, the upper is made of a single piece of Flyknit fabric. While the ultra-lightweight knit may seem in contrast to the bulkier sole, the upper sits comfortably atop it thanks to what Gomez calls "swept pinch" edges, which curve up around the sides of the plastic footbed. "If we changed the sole a millimeter, it would have thrown everything off," she says. In the end, all that tweaking and attention to detail means the two parts actually look like they're in harmony. "They have to work together," says Andreas Harlow, VP and creative director of Nike Running. "Whatever we did with the upper had to be in service of the sole. When you look at it, you get this one sensation, but when you wear it you get something completely different."

Squeek: The VaporMax was designed and built for running. Not walking to kitchens.
Transition: The transition is designed to cushion the impact when running.

haha that's fair. But innovation and consumerism definitely relate, not everything is used for the intent that they were created. This isn't a running sneaker review, but I am betting no one that actually runs would be rocking these.

Great videos as always! I've put over 150 miles in these and I can agree that they are not a great running shoe. You do get the sensation of sinking into the cutouts in the heel even as a lighter runner, but even worse, since there are so many cutouts in the sole unit, it makes it so you have to be super careful what type of surfaces you're on because if you're on any kind of uneven ground, there might not be enough outsole in that particular area you land on and end up twisting and ankle or something. These are definitely for flat ground running. Though I will say the outsole rubber was a lot more durable than I thought it'd be and the traction was great even in wet road conditions. Especially for that price point there are so many better running options, but it was definitely a unique running experience I had the chance to try!

Love these shoes. I'm a lighter weight so it does not depress all the way. The heel to toe transition does take a minute to get used to. I actually like it. They are great for the lab when you are standing for long periods of time because you can shift your weight to the different segments, avoiding fatigued, achy feet, knees and back. Price point matches comfort level.

Please be advised: My Nike Vapormax shoes ($200) have been used from 1/1/18 to 4/4/18 on a Landice L7 treadmill exclusively. The air chamber tube is becoming exposed due rubber heel wear on left shoe. Distance shoes used: 132 miles at 4.5 mph and 430.5 at 7.0 mph. I expect tube failure to follow shortly. Although they are quite comfortable, I have never paid so much and gotten so little in my decades of running shoe purchases. I can only assume those who run outdoors on other surfaces have a better experience

I have a pair and yes they are squeaky. But the comfort and the fact they keep my feet cool makes me love them. Plus the air extremely light. Kinda reminds me of wearing track shoes from my days as sprinter. I have back issues and walking for long periods of time hurts. But not with these. I will be buying more as more color options become available. I recommend spraying them to protect them. But make sure you wipe the excess off of the clear rubber soles with a mild detergent immediately after treating them as it will flake off and it is noticeable as it flakes off. I used Scotch Guard and it works great.

I tried these on today for the first time and my take is:
    Pros
    - overall confort
    - flyknit quality
    - full Air sole
    Cons
    - quality control (there where very visible swabs of glue all around between the sole and the upper) and basically this was the main reason I didn't buy them.
    - don't like the (too) low cut in the heel and how insecurely it wraps around.

@@heskicks I could barely walk in them for the first week of having them. No chance I would ever try running in these. Just no left to right support at all. I mean I guess if you running long distance. But no way you could sprint in these and hit the curve for the 200 no way at all. I prefer the Air Max Plus TN 'Triple Black' LEATHER for running. But I'm not running super long distances 2 miles are less. But I do more sprint workouts, footwork workouts, and things like running lines on the court or running bleachers. Mesh Plus them goofy ass bubbles on the vapor max just don't give me that level of support I need to feel comfortable to go all out.

Got the triple black version, so there is no problems with the white turning all pissy in colour. Shoes are light, a snug thanks to the flyknit, but hate the squeaky sound as mentioned in the video. I would still revert back to the airmax at one point, as it has more secure on your feet and of course more cushioning.

I can't say enough good things about the vapor max, but I always wear the plus. (5'7", 190lb, ankle surgery, bad low back, 15hr long work days). I need the right added support that a Flyknit does not have. I won't be buying the moc/moq, and I will probably try the new Air Max 97 & 95 versions, as well. These are AMAZING for standing on your feet for long periods, and I don't feel that weird transition he's mentioning. I've never used a flyknit, but the "give" he's saying is too intense is an absolute life saver for me!

Just to add a comment regarding the air unit at the heel. I think it's great for running. I did a 10 km without any problem. My dedicated running shoe is a lunar epic low, I tried the vapormax and I will use it again. As long a you don't strike the ground heel first (the proper running technique) the vapormax is perfectly fine for running.

Comments.. this is from a runner. OK.. I didn't run in them knowing that it would have way too much give. The upper is perfect. No issues there. The bottom is the biggest let down. Depending on your leg/foot strength. expect more give on one side vs the other. Also, once they are broken in... you'll feel like you are walking on a very very soft bed. I don't recommend them for running. You want a good cushion shoe from Nike, go with their zoom product line. These are good short distance walking shoes, if you have bad knees. If you have bad ankles, stay away from them. These don't collapse evenly and I doubt they'll collapse evenly for anyone since we all have one leg that is our dominant one. I do love the look and do wear them to do small choirs like grocery shopping. Every now and then I do feel the "unsupported feel" and this is due to again the uneven collapse of the shoe. Also don't walk on rocks or uneven surfaces. The bottom of the shoes has a lot of exposed gaps and you'll feel the rock jab in. Hope this helps

  • @robg857

Dude, your review was so spot on! I LOVE the look (especially these you have!) but seriously, when I walked into work the first time I wore them, people could hear me walk in from the other side of the building!! I even had to apologize a time or two for the distraction. I only have two pair (so far) and I only got the pair I have now because of the dope colorway it was. I don't think I will buy another. In all honesty, Nike did great with this innovation, as they are experts at anyway. But I think they should hang this one up for a bit and focus on different ideas around this one. I have a feeling they are already doing that anyway. We will see. But thumbs up to your very true-to-life sneaker review!!

  • @AcidReign1

I haven’t gotten them yet because mostly the price range but also because it seems like the colorways are very outfit specific, like if you get the darkest $190 colorway, and you want the all black pair, you’re gonna have to pay 10 extra bucks. And I know 10 bucks extra isn’t a lot, but when you pay that 10 extra dollars your mind goes into the mindset that you’re paying over $200.

Ive had the triple blacks for a month now. They were pretty stiff and uncomfortable at the start but broke in a few weeks. Since then they feel like walking on bouncy balls lol. You have to loosen up the entire lacing to get your feet in just right, especially if they are thin and narrow like mine. But once you do get used to them, they can be amazing. Not sure if id want to run in them though, their gait control sucks and I do overprone a bit. But as casual sneakers they are great. More flexible than the Nike free v7. And the design is pretty good too
