While most of this is spot on, I am fundamentally at odds with an unstated premise, here. Chief officers should be, first and foremost, spokespersons for the executive team to the departments. They should be learning the other areas of the business while learning to hold their areas of expertise accountable to corporate goals. The Chief officer who understands this earns top spot in succession planning.
