    The 511 basic is meant to be like a working knife. A regular everyday knife. Not a bushcraft knife etc. It costs like a cup of coffee here in Sweden. I've had multiple generations of it. And once they get used too hard, they get used as opening cans of paint etc. I have a pink one. With a pink sheath of course. Might have more somewhere. A little tip: since Morakniv turns 130 years in 2021 there is special editions of various knifes.

      They are great bushcraft knives as well.
      The late Mors Kochanski and Cody Lundin spoke and speak highly of the Mora knife.
      If it's useful for a craftsman it's useful for a man in the woods. Simple as that.
      They are tools like a hammer or screwdriver. They work really well for the job where the sharp edge and tip is needed.

    I was a diver , I used my mora as a work knife , mostly just cutting lines out of props , It worked out fine , never lost it , I bought it lime green , so I could see it if I dropped it , I liked the way I could just throw it in my tool box and forget about it unless I needed it , Wasn’t afraid of cutting line wrapped around a SS Shaft , fairly inexpensive work knife

    There is a purpose built spot on the sheath to weave a rubber band or something to hold the knife more tightly for hiking and moving around. I use a 1/4 inch slice of bike inner tube. It works perfectly. My 11 and 13 year olds have had these knives for several years. The handle is perfect for kids. The Mora 546 is the stainless version and more suited to wet environments and will require less care.

      While a fun secondary use, no, that isn't the primary use. That shaped block that stands proud on the outer face of the sheath is for bonding multiple sheaths together in a stack-line. It threads in at 180 degree or so orientation to a matching cutout and lock-tab on the belt-loop area of the child sheath (in a stack), then rotates once locked together so the child sheath further out from the belt hangs down but inline. They have photos of it online. The idea is you can have several different variants of this family for a certain task (say a smooth grind and serrated grind and a small profile triple) and reach for whichever meets your needs best. Your use-case is a good one, I've done some retention-cap stuff using that shaped block, paracord, and some thermoset HDPE to positively capture the handle-butt.

  • @amigator7789
    @amigator7789 3 года назад +8

    3:19 .... smart tip - if you don't destroy plastic safe lock (that black plastic thingy which is attached on the top of sheath when you buy this knife, there is little molded symbol of scissors and dotted line on it), you carefuly remove it with help of small flat screwdriver and clip off little protrusion on the top of sheath (bigger sidecutters do the job in seconds), you can then easily attach/remove that black plastic lock and there is virtually no chance that knife will accidentaly fall off then. Useful when travelling and knife is tossed in the bag with other stuff... it will not be drawn out of sheath by bag movement, risk that knife will accidentally cut something inside is zero then.

    • @VirtualJMills
      @VirtualJMills 7 месяцев назад

      Strange, none of the retention involves anything near the belt-clip top edge, all of the retention is around the choil (approximately) inside the sheath-well. I have a bunch of the knives in this family, none had a removable retention clip you described.

    Have the exact same knife, a Robust and SS Companion... All are exceptional values that hit WAY above their cost. Treat that 511s back to a file, and have a flamethrower. Great ergonomics, great steel that is heat treated properly, and most come from the factory very, very sharp. Will do 90% of what any knife can do, many times at 10% of the cost.

    Nice to see how tough it is
    Though none of these tasks should ever be done on a knife, especially this one, a knife isn't an axe or screwdriver, chisel, pry bar, or hammer.
    Used within the scope of their design, they'll last years.

    If you are interested in how a worker uses the such a knife, and how the button system works, I just made a video on it called "European Style Work Trousers and Knives" if you are interested.
    These work well as general outdoors knives, and are used everywhere, from young kids learning to use knives to professional workers. There are other makers of these types of knives, Morakniv is just the one we all know the name of by heart.

    Like you I thought these knives looked like cheap kitchen knives.
    After seeing so many people bragging them up I decided to try one, if nothing else I'd have another kitchen knife.
    Now I have eight of them with another on the way. Dollar for dollar you can't beat a mora. They are hands down the best in their class and can compete with knives costing hundreds as far as getting the job done. I'm a collector and have been since I was little so I've got more than a few knives to choose from. Nine out of ten times I'll be using one of my mora blades because they just work and I don't have to baby them. I use knives everyday and have yet to actually hurt one. I broke a the tip of one if their carving knives on a hickory axe handle I was customizing You'd have to look real hard to see it and after a few minutes on a diamond plate you'd never know. Great review!😊
