- According to news outlets, Discord just released ads in Discord. And it is a massive can of worms.
You have Discord blatantly lying, media misguiding you, and twitter users making bizarre predictions about Discord ads. But I am, self-proclaimed, RUclips's biggest Discord degenerate. Which means I'm qualified to tell you the truth behind Discord's ads and how they aren't what you think.
And what's the thing that's special about these ads. It's that you can turn them off. Wow I just spoiled why I don't mind this feature.

im less worried about the ads and more about discord going on the stock market, literally no company that has been on the stock market, especially related to entertainment or games in any form has retained any goodwill for the userbase it might have had in the past due to investor pressure to keep the thing they put money into keep generating money forever, thats the actual scary part of it all
Didn't Roblox go down the shitter when they went public?
There's a reason beloved companies like MicroProse are private, same with companies like VOID Interactive or Arrowhead Game Studios. They don't want to allow themselves to be controlled by purely money hungry idiots with no care for the user.

You really glossed over the fact that discord wants to launch an IPO. When they do this they no longer have an incentive to listen to the consumers or the community in general. They will listen to and do whatever they can to appease the shareholders. This WILL have a massive impact on discord as a whole. The lovely employee who pushed for being able to disable the ads, yea that will one million hundred thousand percent be removed when they go public.
He also glossed over the fact that rather than the popup being the ad, the quest tells you to stream a game to your friends for a certain amount of time. Its just turning your friends into ads instead. I completely disagree when he says its not intrusive.
@@You-tw4zs I mean, in the example it's turning *you* into the ad, and using you to reach your friends. Which fundamentally is the same, I guess. It's strange and gross, but the little bar isn't particularly intrusive, as far as ads go. IPO, and therefore the future direction of the platform, is *the* issue.
Discord becoming insufferable like Skype had become is inevitable. The only question is how long they will last. The next platform in line already exists, Guilded.
It's just a cycle that will continue either way. People grow tired of one platform becoming insufferable, people move on to the next one that's made by an average joe that has not yet been bought up by big corps.

whenever something becomes an ipo, it will get worse. it has to, capitalism demands it, for profit.

The IPO is the scariest part, cause all shareholders are are people who throw money at something with the expectation that it will be positive income forever, at the cost of everything that company is about. The line better go up, or they could even file a lawsuit for the company going against the interest of it's shareholders.
As a lowly peasant, when I invest, I get told to only invest money I can afford to lose, and I may lose it all. What makes shareholders any different? They are still investing, what makes their investments different to mine? Why are they protected?
@@tmtmrm You technically are as protected as they are, but after i think the ford lawsuit the company has the obligation to maximize the profit of it's shareholders. You losing money is mostly because you believed in the wrong company, and it failed no matter it's efforts. If you can prove that the company intentionally made not the most financially profitable decision - you can sue them.
That's the scary part, because it means that when discord goes IPO they won't have the freedom to make decisions based on "idea" or "vision" of their platform. If there will be a way to maximize profit while harming the user, but not in a way that will cause users to leave or boycott the platform - they will be obligated to do it.
@@StefanidzeDev This exactly. That's why going public is scarier than their dip into ads via game rewards. At least the current quest thing has the chance to stay as it is, just a way to get you to share your game experience with others for rewards in said game.
100% this feels like a test to see how discord users react. They will probably slowly ramp it up till the promoted content isn't as optional. But by then everyone will desensitized to the point they don't complain as much. There is no reason to add this functionality if like 90% of users would have it turned off.

They will 100% lock the ability to hide "Quests" behind Nitro eventually. They're just finding out what works and what people will tolerate before locking down the standards they're setting.

This seems more like advertising FOR discord, you have to use discord to get the cosmetics, if you dont play the finals you're probably not gonna play it for some cosmetics. This gets the finals players to discord, not the other way around

You missed the point here. If you play The Finals and like it, you might want the cosmetics on discord, so you do the quest. The quest makes you stream the game to a friend. This friend might not be familiar with The Finals, and now you, who cares enough about the game to want the cosmetics, are promoting it to your friend. It's very effective marketing.
No it is definitely an ad for the finals. A) it gets you to play the game through fomo and it makes you promote the game to a friend, making it self sustaining advertising.
I wish that discord would just add a corporate mode that has SSO, encryption, and HIPPA compliance or whatever and then charge companies out the wazoo as a competitor to Slack or Teams (which I’m sure EVERYONE would take) and then make their money that way

imo the only reason companies like discord are labelled as unprofitable is because investors expect infinite growth and return on their investment, they suck up all the money that could be used for legitimate costs

Spending $5 to save .25 is not a thing. Write offs are not free money. If you have enough write offs to not pay taxes you will go out of business. The internet heard about write offs once and for some reason really thinks they know how they work
I'm personally all for Vencord adblock but I'm pretty sure if enough people use it, Discord is just gonna pull the "against TOS" card and then we're screwed(this might start a tug of war between plugin devs and execs at Discord)

@@ToxicSalad420 I doubt the developers would want to enforce something like that, but once they go public and the shareholders see that little line start to dip in the downwards direction then I guarantee that's when they will be forced to enforce their rules and start going after them with cease and desists.
Honestly I'm geniunely more worried about the games than discord. 'yet another' cosmetic, thing, etc that is locked behind some 'quest' on discord. So a new games will be '15-30 minutes' of discord streaming, for each game.
Though seriously... it'll get so much worse.

The Thing you turned of at 3:37 is to disable data collection for these ads (like the description next to the button states). This toggle has nothing to do with turning of quests.
Basically the same thing as cookie banners, you won't disable advertisements by clicking on deny, but you will disable (most of) telemetry/usage data collection.

The main reason to buy nitro was to support Discord since they dont have ads. Thats why they tried their DAMNDEST to disguise their ads as anything but what they actually are.
People talking about "Give them a vending machine and they'll demand a store" really forget that we have other alternatives.
not exactly that easy to just move all of my old shit over. i've used the same discord account since 2017, and would prefer if i'm able to keep all of my messages, servers, and friendships intact without having the platform they're on undergo enshittification. it's inevitable, i know, but delaying a move for as long as possible would be nice.
@@gairisiuil I get that, but as long as Discord doesn't completely shut down from the backlash, the messages and friends will still be there. I'm talking about the people that are seething with anger. And maybe, you'll be able to coordinate with your friends to move to a different platform easily. I've done it multiple times so far, the most recent one being from Skype to Discord.

Black Mirror vibes. Quests aren't ads, but make regular people advertise for content that should be available in the game itself in the first place. Oh, my friend is streaming this game? Why? Not to share something cool, but to gain something. It contorts incentives and is still a dangerous path in my mind. I do not like it.
I would actually argue that ads like these that make regular people into ad-pushers is worse. The only silver lining is that it's toggle-able, for now.. This only serves to lower the bar for making me jump onto another platform, should one surface.

As a vencord user i just wanna say that it will probably be really really easy to disable all the ad stuff even without a plugin. Just pure custom/quick css with some really small coding knowledge (no, really, you can just ask on a BD discord server if there will not be a snippet in a day after discord adds ads) allows you to do anything on discord, including deleting/moving/resizing/rotating literally any part of discord in real time. So overall vencord and BD users will be really quick with deleting all the ads

It's vencord but more - that "more" being it's a separate client, not an add-on to discord. Auto-updates, and hassle-free. I think the people would like it.

Vencord also has a Vesktop fork where it has Vencord preinstalled on the browser, so they could block ads from there instead.

The day will eventually come when they really do go full tilt on properly intrusive ads. That day isn't today, but it'll happen.
When that day is finally come, it will go one of two ways:
1.) We mod the ads out literally the day the update goes live, if not before
2.) If option 1 proves non-feasible, a new platform will be ready to replace Discord within two months

It popped while me and my friends were playing the finals so I thought discord knew that we were playing it and added that in lmao. Idm if it's game related quests only since that helps both the game and Discord (and I like games being supported), but if this extends further than that then it'd be intrusive I'd say.
If discord doesnt learn from it's reason why is exists and why they got users very early on. they will loose thier user base as did their predecessors
Before discord, There was sykpe, Its shit and started doing ads, People moved to a few VoIP apps, most popular was Curse Voice, guess what? no updates or improvements then added ads. We moved to discord, for that ad free and much better product.

I hope they dont push it further than it is now, Currently i dont mind these "quests". Gives us the option to engage.
Here's a thing: not a single game I currently play has these bs quests AND not a single game I currently play could implement them in a way that wouldn't make the game itself worse. I don't play anything with battlepasses, cosmetic stores, xp boosts, skins, twitch drops or whatever bs gimmick publishers shove into games nowadays. I play games on my own terms, games that let me set my own goal (as opposed to some bs weekly/daily/monthly/whatever objectives) and that let me do everything I want to do *in the actual game*. There's absolutely zero possibility of integrating these nonsense quests with games that I would not find inherently disruptive to games I play.

The concern for many people is that Discord will lock the option to hide ads behind a paywall or straight up just remove the option. Ads have always started small and become more intrusive as time goes by and corps become more bold against their consumers.

As someone who watches youtube videos without ad blocker on the app it seem not as often as you expect (yes I do get ads) but not as frequent as you think as when say I should seen ad I didn’t also ads on app away seem appear before video and rarely during it. I think it because kinda break the video sometimes as there been times when I have restart app due video unexpectedly getting into loading and no matter where I scroll it stuck there (I think because try load ad inside video). Worth noting only time it seem work when I watching someone live.

They are just a good feature. As a human, I love challenges and collecting stuff. If my favorite chatting platform prompts me with a new challenge to complete so they can earn money to stay (real) ad free, of course I'm in! (yes, I got that fortnite star wars wrap, how do you know?)
not to mention the fact that discord will display to your friends what game you are currently playing, this in its self is advertisement.
I got on discord on my 2012 MacBook Air and it instantly put the fans at max speed at was lagging incredibly at just the one ad
Problems:
Discord historically always harped against ads, that they would never include them. Now they are starting to blatantly monetize more and more; through nitro spam, shop spam and now the quests. I would compare them to Twitch quests, which no one really hates. The issue is the 180 on the stance. It's like a politician whose entire career is about destroying lobbying, and he ends up "taking money for the greater good" later down the line.
Not to mention, you compare it to RUclips, which has this year been in the public eye for taking the absolute most braindead stance against ad-blockers, despite their service being unusable without ad-blockers. If Discord ends up like RUclips, it will die. It's already been bleeding money ever since it was founded, if they continue to piss off their userbase, their company will likely go under.
Ads are indeed insufferable, but as soon as the NTTS onesie is created and the merch drop happens, you can bet I will buy five of them.

Quests are actually something I'd like. It suggests new things I could try.
I feel like that if it does go extreme we can just wait till it does. No need for the complaints yet. Quests are still free shit we get in the game and who knows if maybe they got something good or not lol.
