  • In this falconry video, I will be reviewing the braided falconry leash system sold by Western Sporting Publications. This falconry leash system comprises braided aylmeri jesses with a senate rose knot, a leash extender, and a leash. I will be demonstrating the use of this falconry leash system on a gyr falcon. I will review and explain the merits of each piece of this tethering system, and explain what to look for and what to avoid when utilizing braided falconry equipment.

It is a very good piece of equipment for birds of prey, but it always needs constant cleaning. It is very common to see any number of things get stuck, and they can even retain moisture if you are not careful.
    Great video as always Ben.

Ben, question on the sennit rose button; what is its purpose on the leash extender? It almost seems as though it would be in the way. Also, could you share some information on how to correctly use a fox loop leash? Thanks!

I braided a lovely 8 strand “leash” - solely for use as the short safety attachment from bird to glove - out of elasticized Atwood rope. I proudly posted a pic on a certain FB page and got severely chastised for even considering “bungee”. It took a lot of diplomatic asking but someone finally tried to explain the physics of WHY bungee is bad instead of just stating it as gospel truth or because of a bad thing that happened to a friend of a friend. I still don’t completely understand, something about the transfer of energy on the rebound - I have a mental image of Wile E. Coyote being pulled backwards in a giant sling shot 😂. Suffice it to say that enough people were passionately anti bungee that my safety leash was demoted to holding open the shutter on my mews.

For the price it’s worth it. They last a lot longer than leather ones. I’ll tell you that.

Can you train a Redtail to gunt Canadian Geese?

I have hunted Canadian geese with a female red tail in a narrow irrigation canal setting with a lot of success. Kind of an exception to the rule, but they are definitely capable of it. You just have to make in very quickly. Geese can be vicious.
