One of the best soundtracks in video game history and yet a reviewer thought it didn't hold up at the time. I guess he was spoiled by a bunch of games that had actual recorded music, something that became common at the time with the cd based consoles.
Some of my favorite games back in the day don't really hold up today. I was afraid I just had my nostalgia goggles on when I started Goldeney 007 again. But it wasn't just nostalgia. I'm currently loving every second of it. Yeah, I wish it was that remake version of it, but at least they fixed the controls on the Xbox version. Sadly, my friends back then moved away some time ago, but I plan on getting those multiplayer unlockables so one day, maybe we can get together again and repeat the good old days of multiplayer.
All the praise is a product of the times. Sure, some nerds weren't impressed because they played games on PC or whatever. A majority of gamers just played consoles back then. Considering the landscape of gaming, it makes sense the praise this game got at the time. It's hard to enjoy the same way today because first person shooters have come so far. It was a big step towards Halo which was in the next generation of consoles and there hasn't been big steps for the genre since. Most shooters play much like the first Halo still. Goldeneye was the step between OG Doom to Halo though. That's why it's praised the way it is.
PC gamers were actually mostly impressed with Goldeneye as there were no game like it on PC. PC / Amiga gamers were also impressed by Starfox on SNES. At least PC got Turok 1 + 2 as they also were ahead of their time on consoles.
The controls were not bad at all, most people who criticise it only used Honey and not Solitare.
Goldeneye was the first game for any system that I rented once and then immediately bought my own copy of after, and I did not regret it.
This was, definitely, the right choice. And lucky you! It was hard to find in that first season and seems to be part of why it did so well as a rental

Goldeneye had one of the most perfect soundtracks in any game.
3:36 lol at the voiceover 😂
For me growing up, I thourght the movie was a adaptation of the game and still misremember that false fact to this day.
Great video! Thanks
Man, Battlezone. You gotta cover that one next lol!
Edit: Also, subscribed! I wish you and your channel great growth :)
Thank you so much! Both for the compliment and the good wishes!
Really good vid
I think it’s safe to say Game Informer ‘97 were absolute fuds.
I liked the multi-player

2007's Call Of Duty 4: Modern Warfare was the last big step.
