    It was great hearing a review from someone that uses a truck differently than a typical contractor or tradesman. The solid front axle makes the Super Duty a great platform for off road work and play. I know this is an older video but great content!

    Thanks for the great videos. I also have a 1999 f250 super duty coming up on 150,000 miles. The cost of a new truck is so high I think I will be upgrading . Thanks for the tip on the Warn hubs. I pull an ATV trailer with 2 ATVs and a dirt bike over the mountains from Denver to Moab at least once a year and I have no problems. I installed some Rancho 5000 shocks all around and a Kenwood stereo with Pioneer speakers. I too want locking diff in the rear. My dog Elsa loves watching yours on TV. Keep up the good work.

    Awesome truck man! I’ve got a 2010 Silverado 2500HD and I was always told I can’t off-road it because it’s too big. This inspires me to take mine out! Love the channel!

    I have the same truck 5.4L v8 2v with 5zf transmission. I like it so much. Truck has 416K runs like new. Decent on fuel as well: 14-15 L per 100 km. Thanks for the review.

      I have received a lot of comments along the lines of I can't wait to get a truck so I can go camping, and yes a 4x4 truck can get you into some great places, but I know a lot of people that go out in 2 wheel drive cars. Thanks for the comment.

    As always Thank you for taking the time to make these videos. I feel my Toyo AT tires are some of the best Toyo tires I have owned. I agree with you that folks should just run what they have. To much high $$ into this Overlanding habit. I ran the T-Max dual battery set up from amazon on my old tacoma. Works super so am installing on my 4runner now to charge my camera batteries and tablets ect

    I have a 1999 Ford Ranger 4WD XLT W/ 5 spd manual, inherited from my dad.
    Does pretty well with the 4 ltr V6, but then I don’t carry much other than mountain bikes and kayaks either.
    While I certainly take care of it the nice thing about an older truck is you have to worry about every dent or scratch using it.
    We did just buy a RTT and will be mounting it low much as yours. Looking forward to getting out there.

    Hi Jason, I really enjoy your channel. Mods on a tired motor will likely break it and if I was in your shoes I would only add transferable mods and run her till she dies. Then I would pick up some old guys mint Ford with perfect maintenance records and move everything over. Then if the truck has low miles I would add lockers etc. The lift etc is a slippery slope I ruined my 04 v8 4Runner for everything but wheeling and dropped a ton of money. Never again! My Dad used stock one tons for hunting, working and fishing in Northern Saskatchewan for years he always drove in in 2wd and backed out in 4wd and he never tore up his trucks or the land. I do own a set of 4 Max Trax from Australia for when I go somewhere “stupid “. Just my 2 cents, keep up the great work!

    The full sized bed is great. So many new trucks these days don't have a full size bed.

      I do like the long bed of course it does add to the over length of the truck which makes it harder to maneuver on tight forest roads but I still like having it.

      8 ft bed is a long bed, 6.5ft is standard.

    Jason...very informative and as you said the most important part is just getting out with what you have! That said, I wouldn’t bother with a chip as the only time I’ve seen them useful is with a diesel! I wouldn’t sink more money in the truck at this point unless it’s in things that could be transferred over to another vehicle down the road. I’m looking at a decked system for my Tundra as my next option. I think that a lot of the suspension upgrades are probably only helpful for 5% of folks unless you’re really into rock crawling or something.

      From my research the chip only seems to help the diesel trucks. When I mentioned suspension I was manly talking shocks, I know there are better shocks out there that will give a better ride on rough roads, but I will only consider that if these blow out.

    Nice! I've got a 2000 Ford 250 4x4 7.3L diesel. Love it and got a lot of miles as well, but this engine should go for quite a long time still.

    My 2013 f150 ecoboost 3.5 L. (gen. 1 ) does a good job towing 6000 # rv up hills at hiway speeds . Towing mileage is 10 mpg and 20 mpg when not towing. Msrp was $42,000 and paid 30,000 late in season ( 2015 were coming out in about 2 months - good deal if you keep the truck for more than 5 years.

    Hi Jason, I’m new to your channel so sorry for commenting on this somewhat ‘older’ video. The ‘not liking to go into reverse’ issue due to the gears not being aligned well MIGHT just be fixed as follows: if you feel you can’t put her in reverse, put the lever in neutral, then release the clutch, depress it again and try putting into reverse again. This action should sync the reverse gear. Greetings from the continent with (still) plenty of manuals (Europe) ;-)

    K&N cold air intake was helpful .. but I agree the 99 5.4 has decent power but when you need to pull or haul I can certainly tell the difference. I have a 1999 f150 with the 5.4 AUTO. Mine has over 250,000 and has been very reliable as well.

    Sounds like your F250 is serving you well. My truck is manual and getting into reverse has always been a struggle. I keep the inside very clean, but the outside is usually covered with dirt. Sometimes I leave it dirty for awhile after a really good off trip to remember.

      I feel for the most part is does serve me well, I really don't know what I would gain from a different truck, if anything I would like to upgrade to a E250 or E350 van and have 4 wheel drive kit put in it, but I don't have the funds for that at the moment.

    Great video! More people should give this realistic advice. It is not a show truck. It is for using. I like the simple concept. Have you ever used your rtt off the back rather then the side? Pros and cons of that with a pickup?

      I never have used it off the back, because the cover would hang down and cover the tailgate, you can take the cover off is you want but that's one more step I don't really want to do. I glad you enjoyed the review.

    I'm like you, I'm running what I've got. Currently setting up my 14' Ram 1500 2wd. I'm not an overlander of course. I'll be fulltime on the road with a roof top tent. I may install limited slip of some kind in the future. Even that will be as good as the open diff 4x4 that's in most vehicles.

    I was tossing up a dual battery setup but ended up going with an Arkpak which is essentially the same thing but portable. You can charge them at home or from the car. Mine runs my 40L engel fridge/freezer in the Australian summer for around 4 days on one charge (100ah battery). Great for camera batteries etc as well. Good idea if you aren’t sure how long you will be keeping your vehicle as they are obviously transferable. Keep up the good work.

    Your lucky to have a reliable engine. I have a pampered 99 F250 Lariat 6.8 2WD with 150k on it and The #2 spark plug blew out already and now I'm finding coolant in some of the spark plug wells. The V10 has plenty of ponies for pulling but like most Triton engines, they are known for misfires. Recently I decided to change out all the sensors, cop's, plugs, belt and hoses due to its age. The worst thing for me is finding a good mechanic I can trust. I am old now and I just can't crawl up under the hood anymore. 🇺🇸

      I almost bought a V10 when I was looking, because of the towing power but he gas mileage scared me away. For the most part I have been really happy with this truck, other than a couple annoyances.

    I know this video is almost a year old, but I thought I would let you know I switched over to Amsoil synthetic in my manual trans and it made a big difference in how it shifted, especially on cold mornings.

    One thing I haven't seen in the comments in reference to the lack of power is getting it regeared. It's really easy to modify your truck and not think about the power band. I'm sure you could find a chart online somewhere with the correct gear ratio that will push you back into the right power band, just a thought. One of the main reasons I subbed to your channel about a year ago was that you used a full size truck (and your content was great).

      I don't really know a lot about gear ratios, it does seem to be pretty low geared as I don't use first gear unless I am towing or I want to crawl down a dirt road. Honestly I will probably just leave it alone as it does what I need it to do most of the time. I am really glad your enjoying the channel, thanks for your input.

      I have a 2001 f250 extended cab 5.4l mine doesn't seem too underpowered and its factory no chip or programmer no need it pulls my trailer with two side by sides great and I don't feel the trailer back there much at all

    I had a 2008 f150 FX4, had an extra leaf spring placed in rear end, kept the engine stock, hauling my 206 litres gas tank in box, with tools, never a problem at all, changed oil every 10,000 km, and I sold it, truck had 763,000 km on the odometer. Very good for a half ton truck. Good luck, have fun, watch out for wild animals

    Two things to increase ponies on a gas motor plus fuel economy is open up the intake which has been done with the K&N but jamming more air into it without opening the exhaust so if you are running stock i would address the exhaust then explore the chip. Also got the ecs last month and like it alot thx

    I bought my 99, 3/4 ton, 5.4, 4 dig, auto, xtendo long box in 2015 with 84,000 miles on it so far I've put 35k on it, been the best truck I have ever owned. First thing I did was swap 4.30 geared axles out of a V10 truck into it, doesnt down shift unless on hills and I can actually pull with it. Mileage went from 10 on a good day to a consistent 12, 13 on a long interstate trip.

    I’ve got a stock 2000 Ford Expedition 5.4 220k miles and I pull a 28 foot camper with it it’s around 9k loaded , it does okay truck squats those motors will run for a while if you maintain them! I just purchased a 99 f350 with the 7.3 power stroke haven’t towed with it yet as it needs tires and a ball joint.

    I had a 2003 5.4L 4×4 F-350,it had 297,000 Miles,I pulled 14,000 lbs with it on 4.10 Gears,it did the job but is a straight fuel guzzler never the less.For 260 HP/300 lbs of Torque,it did what it could.I currently have a 2002 5.4L 4×4 F-150 that is also a 5.4L,just the same thing in a lighter truck but it has got up easily with to 8,800 lbs.The 4.6L that was in the F-150 and Expedition/Explorer usually struggles with more than 5,500 lbs and I've seen 5.4L F-150's still handle 10,000 lbs even though that's a bit much.The 5.4L & 6.8L with 260-300 HP/300-325 lbs of Torque are NOT going to struggle or be weak,regardless if you have 3.73,4.10,or 4.56 Gears it will still manage anywhere from 15,700-20,000 lbs,and this is strictly for the F-350's.Obviously both the 7.3L & 6.0L Powerstrokes have twice the Torque and more while they are ideal for heavy duty.But the Gas V8/V10 is actually impressive.I would only agree that doing pulling up a hill with a 5.4L is going to be a issue,which is why a Gas Truck with the 6.8L is more smooth at ease.The F-250 and Excursion itself are rated for 12,500 lbs,I already said what the 5.4L & V10 can do,so that's basically nothing for them to do work for.They are not bad Engines.

    I️ have an ‘03 F150 (157K) with the 5.4L, 4x4, and auto trans. Overall, not a bad engine for the F150. Keep up on the oil changes and when you change the plugs, use Motorcraft and replace the coil packs. Great truck and engine for light off-road use and camping!

      I have had to replace to coil packs already, but other than that I have been happy with reliability of the engine just not the power, lol.

    As far as shifting goes check the linkage from the clutch pedal to the clutch master cylinder, under the dash. There is a plastic bushing in there that wears out. Which makes shifting difficult.

    I have a 2000 f250 super duty 5.4 shortbed and my engine performs like a champ when towing. I bought a tuner for it and you can feel the performance enhanced and the gas mileage is better. I paid 400 for it. It’s a little pricey but you get what you pay for. A good tuner will give you good results.

    Jason, have you ever thought of installing a solar panel on top of the cab and putting a deep cell battery, or two, of some kind in your truck bed? You could use that battery/batteries with jumper cables to back up your starter battery? Jim in Yosemite, Ca.

    I had a 2006 Fx4 with the 5.4...didn't chip it...did ok for light trailers up to 7000 lbs or so... for bigger stuff, I got a F250 with the 6.7 diesel...day/night differences with towing.

    Try selecting 2nd gear before going for reverse, it’s always helped on many different boxes. Let me know if it helps.

    I had a 99 F250 Supercab, LB, 4x4 with 4R100 tranny but mine was a 7.3 litre diesel. The tranny was the weak point especially when towing a 7000# travel trailer.Ford bought it back. Bought a new at the time 2002 F350, CC, LB, 4x4 , 7.3 with a ZF 6 Speed. Love this truck😊 Now towing a 11000# 5th wheel.

    I have a 2006 with the 5.4 3v and it tows a lot better with other types of trailers other than travel trailers. The wind drag really affects it. I typically tow cars. Just towed 8k 500 miles and could go 55 up most hills at 3500 rpm. 3.73 gears. 13 mpg

    I had a 2005 f-150 and I had it chipped by edge I did see some improvement with the throttle response performance mode and eco mode with getting me like 1-2 mpg better. I still have it even after I sold the truck and I've been meaning to sell it ill see if its compatible with your truck if you'd like.

    If that truck or any other truck was in ohio it would have holes in it. Lol. Yours looks real nice. My 99 is gone for good.
    It had a v 10. It had power.

      Jonathon, a smaller rig like that would be nice, but I am not sure it would work with me and the dogs, part of my problem is space, between the dogs, camping gear and Camera Gear I take I think I would struggle to fit in a mid size vehicle. Plus if I put the tent on top I would struggle getting the dogs in it.

      The smallest I would go would be a an SUV with his needs. Something like a Forerunner, Landcruiser, exterra, that is already quite capable and reliable but won't break the bank. Should be abe to pick up some used ones that were lightly used as grocery getters. I'd recommend a tacoma, but the current model is grossly underpowered as well, the new engine you need to rev way up to get the power out of it.

    Interesting review. I have a F-250 with the diesel engine with an auto and 4 wheel drive. I have the same bed length, but my truck is the full 4 door. It has 240,000 miles and it's still solid. Think about using it as a started truck with a fold out tent similiar to what you have for my offroad landscape photography efforts. Worried about the mileage. Once the diesels start going south they can get very very expensive. Thinking about the 4 door Jeep Wrangler as a replacement. Comments would be appreciated. Thanks!

    Probably more cost effective to only add on modular items at this point that can be transferred to a different vehicle. I've been thinking about adding a national luna portable power pack to my truck. I like the idea of being able take it out and use wherever I want .

    5.4L love gearing. The same truck with 4.10s there's no contest in the pulling ability.

    1. Check the viscosity of the fluid in your transmission some of this trucks take ATF fluid like an automatic, maybe someone serviced it before and put the wrong kind.
    2. The grinding going into reverse can be stopped by putting it in 1st or 2nd gear before going into reverse, this actually stops the gears from moving so you can get it in reverse without grinding.

    Still running the stock clutch? Drain the tanny fluid replace it with some mobile 1 synthetic transmission fluid, might help. It's big but off road it gets really big.

    I have 2004 f250 5.4 L 4x4 crew cab I have had it since 130xxx and still run great at 281xxx miles

    Seafoam in the tank, headers, and a tune might get you 15 hp/tq. Installing 4.30+ gears adds no power but you'd think you supercharged it. I'm looking for a manual F250 like this myself but with the V10.

      I own the truck you’re looking for. It’s a 2003 6.8L V10 with the same bed/cab as his. Mine has a different gearbox tho. I think it is called M5 which is a 6-speed (low or ‘crawler’ gear found to the left of 2nd). I special ordered it in California back in 2002 when model year ‘03 began to offer the manual. I should have bought two of them and kept one for the history books. It also has the FX4 package. I’ve never replaced a single part other than consumables such as brakes, fluids and tires. She has 113k miles and black in color. I also replaced the clutch at 110,000 miles…was getting squishy and the bearing in the flywheel was shot. Has 6” lift with 37-12.50 BFGs and Amp Research retractable steps. Otherwise, she is bone stock. Incredible truck. Plenty of power but she’s thirsty. 36 gallon tank’s hard to fill at any gas station in SoCal cause they stop charging your card at $150.

    My 1st and only question would be what gear ratio you have? My 2003 F-150, auto 4.2 V-6, regular cab 8' bed came with an open diff and 3.08 gears. That was great for highway MPG. I swapped the 3.08 open diff for 3.73 on a limited slip and there is no comparison. I have pulled 4wd trucks out who had open diffs, and with the higher ratio I have towed 10k with no problems with the 4.2 V-6.
    If you have open diffs, install limited slips. If you have a short gear like 3.08 or 3.25, swap them out for 3.73 or 4.10. It will feel like a new truck.

    You should have plenty of room for a second battery. Check on the kit from Painless Wiring. It’s about $250.00 for everything you need to do a dual battery set up with simple instructions.

    Hey Jason, just a heads up, I had a 03 F250 5.4, and these trucks have aluminum heads and they have a tendency to blow the spark plug and coil out. Mine did it at 185k, and its almost pointless to fix because its so expensive. But I chipped mine, k&n air intake, and exaust. And it mad a difference, but doing just one isnt really going to notice. u have to do the full stage one basically. Goodluck though, i loved the truck and mine towed great. I now have a 04 bulletproof f250 diesel.

      I am aware of the heads, that why I never do my own spark plugs on this truck, I always have certified mechanic do it. Good to know you saw a little difference, but it also makes me wonder if it contributed in your spark plug blowing out. Thanks for the info.

      Hi Jason, my name is Tim, I own a 2003, F150 7700. It has 5.4L 2v engine, 4R100 trans, and 3.73 rear axle, I think about 165K mi. It's been a very solid, reliable truck, but as PO Jason says, the engine is anemic. Could you please elaborate, when you say you "chipped " it and modified the exhaust somehow, what specifically did you do, or change? Thanks

    Don't know if you still have this truck, but you should do a little research on the K&N. They improve power by offering less filtering the end result is damage to your engine over time. Definitely better to just use a stock paper type filter.

    I had looked at buying a 99 lariat 4x4 auto that had bad engine at 110k miles. The coil over had gone and ruined engine. I had was told by ford mechanic that the coil overs were only good for about 100k miles and degraded by that time, so truck would still drive but under load power would be down. I did not buy it as they only made the 5.4 in it one year and other years would be crazy cost to switch over, since it was only one year fit replacement engine was over 4 k without labor (2004 pricing). Point is check coil overs you may get some improvement and keep that puppy into the 300k range.

    Being an owner of 02 F250 6 speed manual transmission it sounds like you might want to get your clutch replaced and see if they can install a heavy duty one.

      Everett Sams I had a 2001 f150 with the 4.6. Not the same trans but it would grind on quick shifts between 2 and 3. Had it completely serviced including a new clutch and it still did it. Oh well, it still pulled fine

    I had a Ford that did the same thing. Have you tried double clutching from 2nd to 3rd? It eliminated the grind in mine.

    I had a 97 f350 that had the same issue with that zf5. It's a pile. I've driven sm420s, sm465s and np435s and other that 1st, they shifted smoother than the zf5. It's pathetic.

    Your 5.4 2valve is what it is.With 180,000 miles I would just drive it till it fails.They upped the horsepower by adding a valve and variable cam timing around 2005.The only thing the chip would affect would be fuel mixture and spark plug timing on yours.You might get a small bump but no real difference. but do you really want to stress an older engine out in the desert?I have a 08 3 valve 5.4. Great engine for hauling a bed full of camping gear, not enough torque for trailering.Wife wants a camping trailer so I borrowed buddies 16-foot hunting trailer for a trip to the coast and let her drive.She now knows why we need a new truck if she wants a trailer.I would toss the kn filter and go back to factory paper.Much better filtration.

      I pretty much had come to the conclusion that chipping it wouldn't do any good, but I thought I would see if anyone had anyone had experienced different, but so far I have seen anything to change my mind. I kind surprised Ford even offered this motor in the Super Duty.

      I like the old truck too, I wish it shifted better and had the 7.3l in it but all in all it has been a good truck. The rack is the Thule Xsporter.

      Look at getting load bars from one of the many off road manufactures (relentless, CBI, etc). They are usually cheaper then the thule. Although they may be a harder resale in the long run.

    I have a 2004 F250, ext cab, 8' bed, 4WD, 5.4V8, 6 spd man trans with 4.10 gears. I got it new, it has 280K miles and has always averaged 16/16 mpg. No major engine drive line issues. I have a 16', 10K#, tandem axle trailer that I pull with an 8K# tractor on it. It pulls it just fine because it has lots of gears! You didn't say.but I suspect you have 3.73 diff gears which is good for mileage but not pulling. 4.30 diff gears give lousy millage but you can pull any damn thing you want!!

    Believe it or not a fluid change will help those grinds out a lot. I change my trans fluid in my Ford ranger pretty often almost every other oil service or every 10k mine runs atf and I feel like it's to thin sometimes it had a lot of gear rattle and is annoying ha but anyways give it a try! May help.

      I have had the tranny oil changed a few times and it has never improved the shifting unfortunately.

    I have a 2010 f150 4x4 with the 5.4 and auto.milage isn’t very good and I only pull a 3,000 lb rv so haven’t really noticed a lack of power issue.

      2010 probably has improved over my 99, my trailer is about 7000 and it definitely doesn't like it.

    I would say this is a sweet truck I don't care for manual transmissions and I have heard too many bad things about the 5.4 V8

      Not sure what you have heard but the 5.4 is gutless for this size of truck but its been a rock solid engine and I have heard from lots of folks that it is very reliable engine. I understand manual tranny''s aren't for everyone but I love them.

    Pretend you're floating gears when you shift and let it fall into gear it's self. You will find it shifts much better and it will make your tranny last longer. But I agree the zf5 doesn't shift as nice as say the nv4500s but I do like it.

    Both of my Navigators had 1st and 2nd gen 5.4 and both would out perform the Ford Expedition with the same motor. My 99' had more power and torque than my buddies 06 Ford Expedition with the 5.4. And mo 06' Navigator was just crazy good for pulling and it was such a better vehicle than the Escalade with the 6.0.

    If you did gears and lockers you might be much happier. That said, by the time you spend all this money you'd be better off looking for a 11+ Superduty with the 6.2 V8, most have an electronic locking rear diff and immensely more power and towing capability. You can find them with 4.10 gears.

      I would really like to have a diesel again, I had a 03 Duramax that sold because it had injector issues, but I would love to have 99 like mine with the 7.3, but a new truck could be nice as well. Thanks for the info on the newer trucks I didn't know about the rear diffs.

    I have a 99 F-250 220k miles with an auto transmission and a rebuilt 5.4 motor.. the motor is garbage in my opinion.
    My favorite feature of the truck is the “cupthrower” cup holders. They have to be the worst designed cup holders on the planet, if I had a penny for every time I’ve thrown a drink turning a corner I’d actually be able to afford to put gas in the beast.
    Rant aside it is a fairly reliable truck.
    I wouldn’t bother chipping the truck besides the extra cost you’d be putting extra strain on the motor and an highish mileage one at that.
    A diesel mechanic friend o’ mine chipped his brand new 6.5 diesel F 250 and promptly blew the motor. The newer motors have even tighter tolerances then the older ones.
