I think this Netherlands team is built different. They dont have the men to play that traditional 433 they love so much (No true 10, no true right winger, no ture 9). However, I think they are very solid, very discliplined and more than anything: Effective. They had clearer chances in the 1st half (not many in terms of numbers), but they lost control of the midfield. This team will leave and die by its midfield. The sub in of Koopmeiners and Klassen was vital. Senegal did a hell of a job in not letting De Jong play comfortably. When van Gaal reinforced the middle, things changed.
Very much true. Midfield was the problem along with lack of penetrative attacker. Snjeider and Robben, along with Van Persie I guess, were being missed.

Netherlands played to their strengths - first half on the backfoot, second half on the frontfoot. 2. Apparent strength of the Dutch is their backline - 3 CBs from Europe's best clubs. So midfielders can venture forward with high assurance. 3. Senegal is a threat in both their counter pressing and counter attacks, despite missing their best attacker Mané. 4. Senegal can punish attack oriented teams. Netherlands was defense oriented, so they survived. Kudos to their new GK too! 5. I feel the Dutch miss penetrative attacker like Robben. Bergwjn was pocketed by Senegalese CBs.

The victory of the Netherlands is undeserved. Senegal had more chances, more XGs, more shots on target.... Senegal has 6-7 players who have played Afcon final as starters who are injured including their best player. With Mane on one side and Sarr on the other, the Netherlands would have lost this game. Without forgetting the 2 errors of Mendy which led to the 2 goals of the Netherlands.... Senegal is better than Ecuador from what I saw, they will finish 2nd in the group A.
Disagree massively, definetly not 2 errors from Mendy. Also The dutch had like 3-4 chances where they didnt shoot. 2-1 would have been deserved though. Senegal played really good though!!

Van Gaal creates a team , and as tradition no fixed roles in the art of total footbal you dont need strikers if your defenders can score . Its hard for defenders to defend if they are bussy covering the strikers while every other team member can score at any moment.
I like your analysis but you some points I see. It was an even game Senegal’s down fall was the left side of defense. Injury to Ballo Toure meant Diallo shifted from left center back to to full back. Pap Cisse is a level bellow Diallo at bot defending and playing vertical passes, that point will come into focus later. When Diallo went off and Jacobs came on Senegal lost leadership and experience because De John’s pass was on a diagonal to the left of Senegal ‘s defense Jacobs did not track Gacpo or call out to Cisse whose be caught out in other games with runners behind. For the second goal Cisse went for a header and missed outing Koulibaly one one one with Depay and Mendy messed up the Depay short. Senegal have depth but Diallo is a step above Cisse and they miss Saliou Ciss who was the left back at the nations Cup. Senegal will play a 442 against Qatar because they want goals so they have to find a way to have Iliman and Sarr start. Dia will play through the middle with Ndiaye playing off him and Sarr on the left Krepin on the right. Sabaly at right back and Koulibaly at right center back. The left side of the defense would be Diallo and Ballo/ Jacobs if they have no injury issues. Gana Guaye and Mendy as a double pivot. The soft yellows they got against the Dutch will come back to haut them against Ecuador
