    An easy way for me to remember HDL vs LDL cholesterol is H stand for Healthy and L stands for Lethal.

    • @SM-ji1qe
      @SM-ji1qe 4 года назад +11

      Jewlz4ever that’s a good one! I used to give patients their results, and we would say, the H is for high, as you want that number higher, and the L is for low, as you want it lower.

    Jessica, I’m very surprised your doctor didn’t mention to you that medication can also cause high liver enzymes. Mine were so high at one point they wanted to do a liver biopsy. I lost my insurance coverage and stopped all medication (which included anti-depressants and Premarin (as I was post menopausal). After I stopped all medications, my enzymes went back to normal

    A fun side note about B12 - it doesn't come from meat, it comes from bacteria. As animal agriculture gets less natural, animals aren't exposed to those bacteria as readily, so the animals are given B12 supplements. So, considering that the B12 from meat is from supplements, why not cut out the animal and just take the supplements directly?

    • @EMunaBee
      @EMunaBee 4 года назад +2

      It's also due to cleanliness - of water, of washing produce. Vegans who research know to supplement. Nonvegans compromise the largest percentage of those low in B12.

    • @jmilleronaire
      @jmilleronaire 4 года назад +5

      @abcde 12345 Possibly - But also, we can just, y'know, take a supplement.

    • @fernbrisot325
      @fernbrisot325 4 года назад

      @abcde 12345 I think that vegans who lived before our world of super-cleanliness almost certainly ate their fair share of insects in their greens and stored grains/meal.

    • @d.rabbitwhite
      @d.rabbitwhite 4 года назад +1

      @abcde 12345 Our bodies make it but it is so low in the digestive system that we lose it in our feces. This was proven through studies taking one's feces, desiccating it putting it in capsule form and then measuring the levels, not through a blood test but measuring of Methylmalonic acid levels in a urine test. Normal blood serum levels of b12, may not show adequate b12 functional status; Levels in blood not showing levels in cells. Many showing normal blood levels are functionally too dang low. There is b-12 in Lemnoideae (duckweed), and since there are tens of thousands of edible plants, of which humans eat few, comparatively, there may likely be other sources of vit b12 out there.

    Oh my word Jessica! I am the same way with the sun. I get red and blotchy and dizzy with a headache. BTW, when I was in my 20's, I've mentioned this before in another comment on a more recent video of yours, that I used to bleed the opposite of what I should. So, everyday of the week, I would bleed heavily (TMI: with chunks), and only about a week out of each month I would kinda stop bleeding. Drs tried putting me on birth control and it worked, but like you, it made me feel strange, but I stayed on them for a bit longer because it was nice not having to deal with blood every day. I was constantly anemic. I feel like, if the doctors would have said, hey Anna, if you change your diet, and not eat so much processed foods, you could improve your situation, but no one told me ANYTHING about that. It wasn't until I moved to California, got a computer, and went online and researched it, that I learned that I wasn't eating healthy at all. I was the typical American on the SAD diet. And it was really sad. If I ate a cheeseburger, It had to have cheese and bacon and don't even think about watering it down with a piece of lettuce and tomato, but the pickles were ok. And oh BTW, give me the supersize coke and the fries. Salad? I'm not a rabbit! What are you thinking? And then, I went cold turkey. I went Raw vegan and forced my self to do it. It was the BEST thing I ever did. Now, I don't eat nearly as many processed foods, and I don't drink soda/pop, nor eat beef, nor pork. I have added back in fish and chicken after getting married. But, I am considering going vegan again. But, it's difficult when my husband doesn't want to go completely vegan. He won't even eat peas, or black beans, or tofu (unless I hide it, and I don't like to not tell him what I'm feeding him, because what if he's allergic to it and doesn't know it?) I mean, if I say, hey I'm going to prepare tofu and he agrees to eat it and THEN he finds out he can't tolerate it, then I'm not at fault. Yeah... I always tell people what is in the foods I make. But, one time, he bought some "extra protein chocolate cashew milk", and he didn't know it had pea protein in it. He drank it anyway. I told him later, "Hey did you know this has peas in it?" and he says, oh! I guess it's the texture and flavor of actual peas that he doesn't like, but he couldn't taste them in the chocolate cashew milk.

    Fatty Liver is not just caused by alcohol and overweight. My mom is underweight and she has it. Sugar, bread, and such can cause it. Genetics as well. I had my gallbladder removed in 2017 which increases chances for fatty liver. My removal was at the end of October. By March 2018 I had an enlarged liver which was the beginning of fatty liver before the liver actually began showing fat. I had just lost a lot of weight prior to my surgery and diet change. When I started adding more fat-filled foods to my diet and eating more sweets it started. I did not gain back weight until after the fatty liver had begun forming.

    Mrs.B. here, love your journey. All those standards are based on a SAD diet. I was told by a very smart doctor (last Time I saw one) " no, those tests arent the gold standard--- you're the gold standard."
    In other words, how I feel and function, and especially, what I put in my mouth, is the real indicator of my health.
    I hate even junk vegan food. Maybe especially junk vegan food because they bear more guilt as they know better. Well, so do I, so why do I give into it? To borrow some wisdom from AA- look at your past track record. Mine is to lose only to regain. This is my third major loss so my past track record tells me a regain is comming.
    How long its delayed is up to me, just for today I'll choose to eat healthy, just this 24 hour period. Anyone can follow a set behavior for 24 hours. If I want to eat crap 'I'll think about that tomorrow"
    For today I'll think about what's missing in my life and how to heal that void instead of stuffing it with food. We all know we heal from the inside out.

    Thank you for continuing to share your adventure with us. You are so dang real and relatable. Just an FYI, some blood testing labs offer very cheap tests without a referral. For example, one lab in AZ does a Comprehensive Metabolic Panel for $23 and a Lipid Panel for $28 or both for $45. I am sure there are other labs in your area that offer similar tests without a referral. The Vitamin B12 and D3 tests are a lil' more spendy. Still, if you are interested in following the numbers, this is a very cost effective way to do so.

      I listened to vegan gastroenterologist Dr. Angie Sadeghi in a podcast (sorry, I don't recall which podcaster was interviewing her), but she said that it takes time for your gut microbiome to adapt to a different diet. If you were previously a meat eater, your gut microbiome (gut flora) is very different from someone who is whole food plant based. WFPB eaters consume a lot more fibre, which promotes healthy gut microbiome. But it takes time to grow that good gut flora. It doesn't happen over night. She suggested easing into consuming foods like beans and lentils, or other high fibre foods. You should start with just a couple tablespoons of beans per day. Same goes for other high fibre foods like raw greens, or broccoli. Dr. Sadeghi suggested at first to eat only cooked or steamed vegetables, they are much easier to digest than raw vegetables. You should do this for a few weeks, then gradually shift over to including more raw veggies and green salads. Basically, her advice was to change your diet slowly, and take several weeks or maybe even a couple of months to switch to WFPB diet. I did it this way just by chance, as we slowly stopped eating eggs, then replaced dairy with plant milks, then reduced meat, then eliminated meat. I believe I made the change over about 6 months. I did not experience any low energy, or other bad physical side effects.

    Total protein measure the amount of albumin (most common protein in the blood) and immunoglobulin (antibody molecules). Albumin is made in the liver, so low albumin can indicate liver issues. Immunoglobulins levels can rise significantly if you have lymphoma or can be significantly low if you have impaired lymphocyte function, among other things.

    The difference between 2019 and 2020 for your lipids are astounding! Can you tell me if you think this was a cumulative effect of 2 years of wfpb or were you extra strict? My husband has severe CAD and hi's total cholesterol was 356 before wfpb. It has lingered around the 240 range since going wfpb a couple years ago but he is not super strict (sadly). 116 point drop is still impressive, imo, but nothing like what he needs for his arteries. So, I was just curious because your labs were great. On a side note, I found out a few months ago my Vit D levels were in the toilet at 12 (same as yours!) And my iron saturation level was 7%, also in the toilet. I honestly thought I was seriously ill or maybe even dying before that revelation...short of breath, severe palpitations, no energy. I also suffered from extreme anxiety and depression. My dr put me on a mega dose of D3 for a month, then I've carried on supplementing. I also take slow release iron pills. I would advise anybody, especially women, to have these levels checked.

      I found I was losing to much iron through my cycle. It could be a problem for you. Also perhaps celiac if that makes any sense. I have fairly asymptomatic celiac until I had a period of time without it and re-introduced. Now I get horrible stomach pain(where I cannot eat for a long while). I feel like women's health problems as still not addressed properly in doctor's offices. They are quick to put you on supplements and birth control. They don't ever look for why they have those conditions and write them off as normal or natural.

    • @victoriarose4506
      @victoriarose4506 4 года назад

      @@marley7659 I have pretty heavy periods, 6-7 days long, every 23-25 days. They put me on birth control to try and regulate my cycle and help with the anxiety and depression because they would get the worst a few days before my period would start. I lasted 3 months then trashed those things. I felt getting my D levels and iron levels back up did the best for me. The pills just started making me chronically irritable instead lol. I will consider the celiac suggestion though....

    • @marley7659
      @marley7659 4 года назад

      @@victoriarose4506 I have those issues. It doesn't mean you do as well. I just considered I had problems with both because iron supplements weren't working. If they are shown to work for you celiac is not likely. For me it was a problem or chronic loss and malabsorption. Which is why it made sense my ferritin wasn't going up. Funny thing is for the first time in 2 years I have energy to exercise again. I have been strictly gluten free for a few weeks and lower fat. The lower fat being really important. I still have flax, chia, hemp, and some peanuts. I just keep the amount very modest. My periods are getting so much better from a pain point of view. I am still taking supplements though.

    I remember HDL happy, LDL lousy. Dealing with heavy monthly is not fun and try not to be embarassed speaking about it. So many of us suffer(ed) from it too. Did you have your hormone levels checked? Most women start around 35 in the next stage of reproductive health. Hormone levels will change and it's all related and affects your physical & mental health.

Big difference from being stuck in bed in pain. Every women is different. Hormonal balance is important. It isn't always the thyroid. It is usually a balance of estrogen to progesterone. fyi. My son has autoimmune liver disease... everyone I know from the liver disease community has ast and alt waaaay higher than yours. My son’s were in the 900s. Some of the variation is due to margin of error, etc. Having said that, I have no doubt that if you were on the road to fatty liver, you nipped it in the bud by going WFPB. Non-alcoholic liver disease is the fastest growing cause of the need for liver transplants. You dodged a bullet! ❤️
