Vegan Recipe: Fish and Chips | Edgy Veg

  • If you love the new Fish and Chips vegan makeover, help me get to 500 likes! I love beer and I love pub-style food, the two usually go hand-in-hand don't they? But what happens when I mix the two, and take this fishy favorite to a world of meatless? Well a magical meal that features a weird vegetable that you would never think would make an awesome vegan fish alternative.

    To make this recipe you will need:
    eggplant
    kelp granules
    lemon juice
    garlic powder
    vegetable broth
    bottle of beer
    organic all-purpose flour
    pepper
    salt

    I tried this recipe and it's really good. I had a hard time frying it on both sides to get the eggplant cooked through. So I cut up the eggplant and left out the flour. When I scooped the batter with eggplant on the frying pan it was REALLY good. It reminded me of this Puerto Rican dish my grandma makes called bacalaoitos. To make it follow the same beer batter recipe, add a generous dash of adobo, and even leave out the beer and replace it with water taste just like fish! It was an accident but I'm so thankful you helped me figure this out!

      Daylon Bey carbonated water works well too, club soda. Gives you the bubbles you need!

    Thank you for your recipes, your time and energy to figure these out. Growing up I had a slight allergy to soy products and caffeine, but since my military service my allergies have become severe, so I have to really pay attention to ingredients in food products. I can't wait to try your recipe on this "phish". 😋

      For allergies use a digestive enzyme and drink nettle left tea. It will change drastically after a month or 2.

    You have such a great personality. I have dried nori (seaweed) not dried kelp, so can I use nori instead? Guess I will have to use your recipe with the nori and find out. Thank you for a great video.

      Edgy Veg We eat a lot of Lundberg basmati rice which we like to put on a sheet of nori, roll up and eat. Have found some nori is more salty than other brands but generally yes any seaweed works in dishes that call for kelp or seaweed.

    I bought an eggplant, thinking I'd use it to make some eggplant parmesan (Minimalist Baker's got a vegan recipe), but then I remembered this recipe. I might make these instead.
    If I don't have a deep fryer, will it be possible to pan- or oven-fry.

    I find the oil from a jar of non-pitted stone in black olives + dill + sea salt works great for a fishy flavour, more mackerel than cod though really.

    Ok...so I tried this recipe and my picky eater 15year old REALLY liked it.. 👍🏾👍🏾. I had an issue with the middle not being as flaky as yours 😔😔. Do you think placing it in the oven for a few while I finish frying the others will help? Any suggestion is appreciated. 💋💋

    So it does it taste like fish? I'm trying to decide if I am going to be a pesco-vegetarian, but I don't want to eat fish at the same time because like you said, fish are friends, not food ;)

    Ume plum vinegar will produce a much better fishy flavor than kelp.

    Being vegan is not hard work! At least not for me. Dealing with ignorant people can be though. ha
    This vegan fish and chips recipe is great!! It looks super tasty and I also loved that you used a Heineken. My go-to beer for when I want to feel yeasty. ;-)

    Or you can just boil kelp with water then add other seasoning then let it cool down. By doing so its gonna give out more flavour, then the leftover kelp you can actually make it into salads too :)

    New vegan. Sounds delicious. What kind of beer did you use? It looks like Heineken? I just found out today that the beer I bought is not on the list of vegan beers from PETA. I drink beer once or twice a year. I was in the mood for a beer. Bought a pack of Corona my fav. Something told me to check if alcohol is vegan. Wish that something had talked to me before I bought it. 😂

    I gonna put that aubergine with the marinade into a freezer bag and squeeze the air out before I lock it, so the aubergine is really covered all around mit marinade and not swim on top of it. :)

    Will this work with pan frying? I don't have a deep fryer and I know I could just use a pot but pan frying would be easier. Trying to make this tonight!

    I have cut down my meat intake over the past year.I am at the stage now where I have cut out all red meat and seafood and most dairy - other than minute amounts from milk say as by product in a roll - but so damn hard having an amazing Indian restaurant down the road that does amazing chicken curry,but have since found a recipe for good tofu chicken.Eggs are the only thing. Not that I especially love them and I know you can get protein from plants and nuts but am a bit scared to go the full hog as I heard it is harder to absorb all protein from nuts and stuff and it is convenience as well. I would never eat eggs outside as would only want them to come from somewhere I know is not stuck in a cage.

      Because you have to kill the dying lemon completely before you squeeze it :)

    The only thing I dont understand Is that you use Heineken. That is the most nasty beer we create here in the Netherlands. It tastes like sewage water

      KELSEY NGKOO My fiance liked it, a lot. It resembled fish very well. The seaweed flakes are crucial. It tasted too much like fish for me so it put me off haha hilarious!!

      you can use beer. The alcohol disappears after heating up, so there won't be any alcohol left after frying. But if you still hesitate, just use non-alcoholic beer! Your parents will surely understand!

    Okay I cooked this tonight and here is my review.I soaked it in marinade for about six hours the problem was not the taste i could have adjusted that by using diffrent beer I should have know better since I do not like the taste of beer anyway. Anyhow the texture came out kind of gooey and not firm texture of fried eggplant I remember

      INTELLECT112 that's an interesting experience. Not all eggplants are created equal, you should give it another go... deep frying is not always consistent either.

      Edgy Veg I have another question how long and at what temperature or setting are you supposed to deep fry it I pan fried mine that is where I think I messed up.
