I remember every year the Magic would have a draft party at the Orlando Arena or the O-rena as we like to call it, and it would be open to the public. The Magic had the number 1 pick that year and selected Chris Webber. The Arena went nuts I mean everybody cheering and happy as hell people giving each other hi fives and hugging each other except me. We needed a point guard and we already had Shaq, and Chris Webber's game were to similar and our point guard at the time Scott Skiles was getting old and close to retirement. Anyhow with the third pick the golden State Warriors selected Penny Hardaway and I was so mad I was like how in the hell could they pass up on a 6"7 point guard that could shoot handle the ball and Pass like Magic Johnson. Well just a few picks later the commissioner came up to the podium and announced a trade that Golden State was sending the draft rights of Penny Hardaway to Orlando along with I believe 3 Future first round picks. Man the people starting booing like crazy throwing cups and popcorn it seemed like I was the only one happy as shit lol....because I knew Penny was the Future right next to Shaq.... If you're not from Orlando most people don't know but for about the first week of Penny's NBA Career the Orlando crowd booed Penny it was brutal, but a couple no look passes to Shaq an Alley-oop and a few dunks and the rest was history..... Still to this day my favorite player......

I forgot how good Penny was. Nobody finished plays like he did. He would draw fouls and get that 3 point play CONSTANTLY. When he decided to drive into the paint, he was going to score. Period. Move or get run over. Penny and Shaq made a fledgling expansion team into a force to be reckoned with in the 90s.

Golden State traded Penny for Chris Webber during that draft. C-Web (Chris Webber) was a good player too. Both Penny and C-Web had their careers cut short by injuries but Pennys was really short. Shaq originally wanted the Magic to take C-Web who was a Power Forward so they would have two big men. But Shaq was making a movie in the offseason called "Blue Chips" and Penny was in the movie too and they got to play ball and develop a chemistry. Shaq realized he would make a great team with a Point Guard like Penny and ended up telling the Magic to draft Penny. Shaq and Penny were a deadly team but only for a couple years. They are the only team to beat Jordan Bulls in the playoffs in the 90s. That was Jordan first year back where he wasn't in full shape yet and before the Bulls got Dennis Rodman but still very impressive feat. The magic were favorites in the finals but they were young and not mature yet then one of their three point shooters & best shooters choked in the 1st game & they didn't know how to handle it. Before they had a chance to get a championship together Shaq left for LA. Penny got hurt then which hurt his athleticism but without Shaq he was under pressure to carry the team single handily and that made the injuries even worse. He ended up playing alot of years but his first couple years were very special and some of the best PG play NBA has ever seen. Penny is a real good guy too. He didn't want to get into coaching but one of his friends was dying of cancer and asked him to help coach a high school team. Penny helped him coach winning many championships in a row before and after his death then moved up to University of Memphis which him and his now deceased friend used to dream about leading to the NCAA title. Penny is very loyal to his hometown Memphis and his friends and family. A good guy in sports.

To address why he was drafted by Goldenstate, his draft rights were traded to Orlando in exchange for the draft rights to Chris Webber, another former superstar. But young Penny was that dude, he was a good shooter too, if Shaq had stayed in Orlando I believe they would have managed at least 1-2 championships.

PPENNNYY HAARRDAWAAYYY , coming to America in 90's Penny and Shaq made me love basketball- during that time period after Jordan, Penny and Grant Hill were everybody next favorite before Kobe and Iverson came into the scene. Penny was bridge between like old school 1970s 1980s soul and jazz fundamentals with 90s attacking hip hop style, you compared him Kobe they are similar but Penny had natural feel for game, he had spin move like Earl Monroe, could pass and be unselfish like Magic and he had acrobatic game in the air like MJ and he would make defense play here and there. Penny and Shaq to me was better than Kobe and Shaq because Penny made the ball flow, he wasn't focused on scoring - he could read the floor and manipulate it by doing certain move and have counter options to mostly get his team mates going and worse come to worse he'd do something creative and score.
Something highlights didn't really show is, MJ had patterned fadeaway- Penny had a double clutch shot he could jump straight up in air or laterally , usually he would do it on pick and roll with Shaq where he would jump in air if he couldn't get to basket from Shaq's pick freeze the defense to throw Shaq lob dunk or he jump in air hand and wait for defender to hit floor then shoot the ball or he'd do it on iso with defender in high post.
Penny only weaknesses was probably he didn't have more dominant on court mind set to match his great skills, he didn't take care of his body stretching and eating properly which led to injuries and he could been more dominant defender but other than that - his game was artistic.
Definitely players similar to Hardaway are Elgin Baylor, Pistol Pete Marovich, Earl Monroe aka Jesus, Hakeem Dream Olajawon, David Thompson, Alimo And1 Street Baller and since you like sports check out Emanual Augustus very creative boxing style you might enjoy.

One of my favorite players ever Check out the time clock on a lot of those dunks I remember he had some crazy game winning dunks. He woulda been Kobe if Shaq woulda stayed in Orlando. They have a Magic documentary where he getting on Shaq about leaving him saying that shoulda been me talking about Kobe. Shaq was laughing and apologized I thought it was pretty funny. Injuries kept him from being a all time great but he still ended up having a really good career because like u said his vision was crazy. Love your channel u r so beautiful and articulate even with the retainer in 😁🤣 another good one 👍🏾👍🏾

Could you do a Tim Hardaway video? He in my opinion is one of the players that was overlooked until a team had to deal with him. His fundamentals were great.

Penny was so good, sad how injuries shortened his career. A few other suggestions: Bernard King was a beast, Michael Ray Richardson, Dr. J, and maybe Dominique Wilkins the goat of dunkers

Draft night trade because Shaq wanted him to joint the team! Got badly injured and is considered as one of the biggest WHAT IF players! He was Kobe before Kobe, as Shaq said! Plus, MJ said on camera that he saw Penny as the next best thing when he went in his first retirement!

He had this back in the post game that even Michael Jordan couldn't guard. In the Eastern Conference finals, Jordan said he has this jittery back and forth in the post that's hard to guard. His size and quickness and court vision was amazing. Not a good shooter, but made an impact in the game and helped getting wins with Shaq.
