Thank you for watching our ear wax removal video today. The ear wax extraction featured in todays video was carried out using endoscopic microsuction. This procedure uses a small camera called an endoscope to visualise inside the ear canal whilst a small suction tube is inserted to gently remove ear wax.
We can also use other tools to remove hard ear wax, foreign bodies, peeling dead skin or for ear infection removal.
All the ear wax cleaning videos you see on our channel are carried out by our ear wax specialists Mr Rhys Barber and Mr Taylor Green.
We post new ear cleaning videos Monday - Friday at 9PM GMT so if you find ear wax removal satisfying please consider subscribing to our channel.
Ear wax plays a vital role in ear health. It helps to prevent ear infection and helps with ear cleaning by picking up any dirt or debris that accumulates in the ear canal. Normally this ear wax would fall out of the ear taking any dirt or debris with it.
How to remove ear wax?
Many people use q-tips/cotton buds for ear wax removal at home this is one of the worst things you can put into the ear as this can lead to an increased ear wax buildup or in extreme cases impacted ear wax. The best way to remove ear wax is to let your ears clean themselves and not to put anything smaller than your elbow in your ears!
How do I know if I have an earwax blockage?
If you experience a change in your hearing, discomfort in the ear or jaw or a feeling of fullness in the ear canal you may have an ear wax blockage. Our advice is to speak to your Doctor or local Audiologist who can take a look in your ears and assess whether ear cleaning is needed.

Some of the Waxaholics and I have agreed that you guys deserve superhero names so Kaoscteations865 came up with "Ribbonman" and "The Keratin Kid". I hope you like them! 😁
Make it "The Keratin Kid" and it doubles as an Old West Outlaw name, lol.
😂😂😂😂👍
I'll fix that because that's what I meant to say. Thank you for pointing that out!!!
These are absolutely brilliant!
So awesome!
I'm glad you're talking about the problems going on with random untrained people being "accredited" after only 2 days of training (if that) with no health or audiology background. I would never let anyone so poorly trained put curetage or suction tools in my ears. That's exactly why pharmacies in the US don't sell ear curettes. It's not safe.
Shout out to Neel. He's been really passionate about that issue and maintaining patient safety.
Glad to hear you are aligned with Neel. It's scary to think there are unqualified people just digging around in ears all willy nilly
I've honestly have been waiting to see if Rhys and Taylor were going to come in about that situation. I've been watching Neel talk about it on his channel and fighting the good fight.
I understand that one person who was trained was a plumber. Would you want someone with a 1 or 2 day course in plumbing to come fix your pipes? With no guarantee or warranty? It’s madness! You have to be your own advocate and I thank Rhys and Taylor for adding their voices to protect the public’s hearing.
In the US, Cerumen Removal (Ear Wax) licensed and certified Audiologist or a Medical Doctor. Medicare (Insurance for Age 65+yrs old generally) considers Cerumen Removal to be a "surgical procedure", and will only pay for the procedure if it is done by a Medical Doctor. Usually, the doctors who have the specialized equipment required to do these extractions in their office are Otolaryngologist, also know as an ENT Specialist (Ear, Nose, Throat doctor). Very few Primary Care or Family Care Physicians have this equipment on hand, so patients are referred for an ENT consult. Audiologists are licensed and properly trained to do Cerumen Removal, the only difference is whether their health insurance will cover the costs or if the patient will have to pay privately. You will NOT see anyone in the US getting certified or licensed to do this procedure outside of medical physicians and audiologists.
Hi Rhys and Taylor, thanks for a great video. I had an infected pinar and it was so painful and swollen but the skin will only stretch so far so it felt like my skin was going to pop. I have ezcema and my ear canal was really itchy. Thankfully antibiotics helped!
I absolutely agree that one should be formally trained and not have just taken a 2 week course to learn to remove earwax. There is so you need to know! First rule: Do No Harm! I’ve said it before, but it can’t be over emphasized! Thanks Rhys and Taylor! ❤
The course that Neel has been talking about is 2 days, not 2 weeks. Definitely not enough time with no previous experience
Fabulous guys & hi to that wonderful ear holder, aka Mrs B!👋👋👋 I heard Neel echoing the same warning. You generally get what you pay for & an audiologist would always be the one to see. Especially if it’s these two lovely gents!💙💙💙💙
Neel is on a mission to get this issue with just anyone getting "qualified". Its absolutely insane with what's going on. Neel hasn't posted in about a week, which is very odd for him.
Neel actual posted today 1,424 and I hope he continues to fight the good fight against the BSHAA.💪🏾💪🏾
I think he’s keeping the information and out comes close to the vest. I’m sure when it’s all said and done he’ll let us all know.
@@davidtheartist8179 I saw thank you! Neel is an awesome human, as are Rhys and Taylor.
@@LeslieDanovich very true indeed. Amazing human beings
Great video guys 👍🏻👍🏻 Yes, I've heard Neil talking about unqualified people being trained in 1 day. That's ridiculous and frightening !! Take care ❤😘😘🍀🏴
I live across the pond, but I think if I ever had ear problems, I’d come to you!
It is absolutely absurd what some companies are doing. I am very appreciative of your opinions on this guys, thank you and thank you for the tips of what to look for ❤
Mr B, I really love your kindness and unselfishness. How you take a back seat and allow Taylor to shine. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's not like Taylor not pushing through those rain clouds on his own. I love you guys. You are so great together. Compliment each other. There are no "Audiology Associates" without the two of you. Thanks Mr. B, Thanks Taylor Green. ❤🎉😊😂
Ouch, that poor woman! Eczema just reaches a whole different level of itchy and sore when it gets infected, which can happen all too easily. I hope she gets on the right antibiotics soon.
So nice to see how well you two get along. I am in Massachusetts, otherwise I would go to your clinic!! 😂
A flight from Logan isn’t that long…
I’m considering flying over there from Seattle to see friends and get my ears cleaned…
Correct me if I'm wrong, but at the end when estimating length of removed debris, after stating 5/8" the doctors also estimated 1 3/4 (meaning 1 3/4 cm?). As an American Engineer who regularly & dynamically uses & converts between Metric & Imperial "on the fly", I found it interesting how these "native metric usage" doctors would combine a metric cm measurement w/ a fractional 1 3/4 reference. Might seem like a little thing, but in a profession where I would only reference Metric specifically or Imperial (& never combine or jumble the two), their referencing 1 3/4 in a Metric sense, really stood out. I guess they fully understood the context usage of 1 3/4 in a metric sense & this was perfectly understood; again it just seems very unusual as an Imperial "user" to hear Metric & Imperial combined so interchangeably.
Forceps made a cameo appearance 👏
Here in the Central Valley of California, we occasionally see pin as infected with a wind-blown fungus called cocciidiodomycosis. It leaves the pinnacle shrunke, lumpy, and scarred after treatment
I once had a left sided infection of my pinner and ear canal. It got so bad overnight that the whole left side of my face was swollen, including the side of my nose. I looked like I'd done 12 rounds with Nigel Benn! It was so painful that I had to get someone else to drive me to A and E. The doctor there was incredibly rough when introducing the speculum into my ear that I actually shouted at him. 2 courses of antibiotics and one of steroids before I stopped feeling appalling. I really appreciate admire the skill and techniques you both put into your removals. As with Neil and Connor on their channels. The thought of having a receptionist or other lay person putting sharp tools in people's ears makes me wince!!
Love your channel guys. Your staff all seem incredible, and the banter between you two is fabulous xx
Thanks, guys! Brilliant work! Thanks to lovely client ♥️
Rhys, Taylor absolutely fascinated as always. Why ear wax is so interesting to us is a mystery but then I suspect we could ask you the same question. What is it that fascinates/fascinated you so that you ended up doing this?? Have you addressed this previously with viewers? If so, I apologize but it might be worth a revisit. My late husband’s comment when he discovered me perched over my tablet with fascination was: “Hmmm, well I guess it’s better than serial killers”. (I think I’ve used “fascinating” about 3 more times than I should have. Your fault for being so….well you know.) Anyway keep on. We’re watching!!
I have a question, please. Was that first bit of wax that came out in 1st patient possibly an ear bud covered in wax? It looked kinda like one with the opening facing down. I also could have been seeing things after binging these to long today. Thanks love everyone you put out.
Looking after ears is not just a random thing to do. Absolutely need to be qualified and experienced, or supported when new. You 2 are amazing to watch in doing a job that takes lots of patience and skill. ❤
When that last piece was removed, I think I could hear better myself 😅
Thanks for the heads up to everyone regarding what to look for when choosing the right person to do procedures on our ears. You guys are the best ❤️❤️
I need to buy a ticket to go to the UK to have you guys take a look at my ear.
We have insurance companies here in the States that make the GP put in an order and approval before patients can be seen by someone like yourselves.
I have to tell you all this before I burst! 😂 I was confessing my watching of wax/keratin removal before sleep...a lady in the group says she remembers her Grandma using a crochet hook on her Grandpa's ears to get deeper 😬 I was stunned and horrified by the vision...and then I checked my crochet hooks when I got home 😂
Thank you for talking about this... the wax whisperer has been talking about it for a couple months
Nothing like your receptionist being your backup for a vasectomy! After a two day course, she's now qualified, so let's go. Be sure to ask if she took the extra course in anesthesia, don't want to do this with a leather strap between the teeth. Good luck! I do not approve of a two day course in ear cleaning
Top job Rhys wow such a difficult one with the swollen canal 😮😊
I know there's been a push recently to get pharmacies to take on diagnosis and prescription for minor ailments so i don't know why they aren't willing to do this for other specialties especially if you have a uni degree in the field or an associated health field. It would free up GPs and make sure that specialists in their fields can make sure the patient is getting the right care.
Love the video boys 👏
They were very difficult ears, well done! Happy Birthday
Was the woman with the infected pinna in any pain?
What about "The Remarkable Rhys Barber"?
Good jobs done lads nice to see yous both it's good yous are professionals at your job I think I'd have to travel all the way to yous or Neel or ask your advice where I should go in my area yous brilliant thanks guys
At this point, if I need ear wax removal I’m flying over to the UK to have it done. Hardly anyone in the US uses microsuction and from the videos I’ve seen US ear wax removers can be butchers. I only trust you guys, Neel and Nursing Richard.
And Conor at Durham. He's excellent and has trained Rhys and Taylor on ear irrigation. He's easy on the eyes, as well. 😉
Brilliant both of you. Would you ever use the metal tube in an ear canal to help open it up for cleaning?
It’s hard to get microsuction in the US, but if I need to get it done, I can get a direct flight to Heathrow from where I am and see either you or Neel after a wee bit of a train ride!
Thank you for supporting Neel on this issue of training lay people to perform earwax removal procedures. The people of the UK deserve to have it done by qualified medical professionals!
In the US, audiologists don't do ear cleanings. They only do hearing tests and hearing-related care (hearing aids and such). You might get an ENT to do it, but rarely. It's usually a GP that does the wax removal (usually their nurse), and I hate it. It's why I've developed such a dislike for irrigation. Never had one that wasn't too hot, too rough, painful (before and after), and followed by a minor infection and sensitivity. So I can empathize with your fears about so many unqualified people getting "trained" to do ear cleaning. Few have the temperament for it, and they need to be experienced in ear physiology and care to do it well.
Not true. Good friend is an audiologist and she does this all the time.
I bet it feels good to get that gunk out.
Hi Guys, Very useful and important information - thank you.
As someone who had rampant, I mean 90%+ of body, psoriasis(lack of health insurance and having other issues making it more difficult to treat, resolved now) I was just glad it didn't get into certain parts like my ears. Just behind my ear and a bit on the outer portion got some of it but it didn't spread anymore than that thankfully.
06:58 ok argument point … ear cleaning needs a competent person , not really a *medically trained certified* “specialist”
I mean how much training and “qualifications” do you need to clean ears?
The information can’t be more than 8 hours worth but a good eye in combination with a steady hand is really really important.
After that its experience experience experience to gain expertise. Surely.
Happy Birthday🎉
Unfortunately it is now easy to become a "professional" in a lot of fields with minimal training as long as you pay someone. It's ruined the I.T. field, electricians, carpenters, truck drivers, so many jobs being botched causing losses and even personal danger to clients.
I think it's an insult to your profession and years of training, to send lay persons on a day course. I am a nurse and an Aromatherapist, I trained in Aromatherapy for a year. Yet colleges do 6 week night classes! Oils can be dangerous. I also think your training should include prescribing. Rant over!
I love you guys, but I'm not coming to the UK to see you. I'm from Des Moines, Iowa USA. I'm basically in the middle of the USA.
Hi Mr B And Taylor G 🙋🏽 good job 👍🏽👍🏽.
Howdy - what does it look like inside the tube once it gets sucked up? Does it go into a chamber?
The tube is connected to a rubber or silicone hose that feeds directly into a smallish water filled tank. At the beginning days of the channel, Rhys would occasionally show the tank shot so people could see everything that came out but too many folks complained it was gross so he quit doing that. 🤣
Hi guys have you ever heard of an ear speculum? It looks like a funnel but it holds the ear open. I saw one and thought what the heck? I don't know , what do you think?
Hey guys, could you go back to clearer videos and pausing to let us see what youve removed? Ok, thanks now ❤
Reese , I wish I could use your services but nope not going to be in your area anytime soon.
Great video enjoy all of the clean outs
That’s so crazy to hear a receptionist can get certified after an 8 hour course!!! In the U.S. it has to be a trained medical professional. Weather a Certified Clinical Medical Assistant to a Paramedic or nurse, NP,PA,MD,DO most of us have a lot more training than 8 hrs.
It’s a block built into most our certifications or degrees. The ear is so delicate and sensitive that absolutely blows one away.
I’m in the USA. Is this ear cleaning without training a cultural thing?
Looked like they pulled a dead caterpillar out of there.
How come an ear lavage isn’t used to loosen the build first ?
Thanks for the video. I answered today on your Facebook channel. My comments are in the Facebook channel. Thanks.
Iowa here. Steve. M
Very interesting. I question why UK would authorize people without professional training to perform such a delicate procedure. What’s next?
Hi guys, another interesting video. Well done clearing all of that. Seems crazy that people can do a few hours course and then potentially cause great damage to our ears. It’s ridiculous that you, as qualified audiologist can’t prescribe for patients. You are the guys who know exactly what you’re looking and what will help get rid of the problem. It must be frustrating for patients going backwards and forwards to the GP and being prescribed ear drops to treat general ear problems instead of the very specific medication they need. It’s probably frustrating for the GP too, as he knows you are the people who know best what his patient needs. It also seems silly you can’t use pain relief when dealing with a particulay sensitive problem. Must be annoying for you too. Thanks very much for sharing.
Lovely to see you both again hope you both and the team are well.
I finally have my own you tube so I don’t have to bother with flooding my husband’s with ear wax removal videos, let’s put it this way he is not a fan, I don’t understand anyone who doesn’t love them but each to their own I guess
All the best from Jacqui, TASSY Australia
I love watching you two together
I have psoriasis and I'm grateful I've not had an outer ear infection, even my inner ones have been pretty mild and now I know how to help prevent them. Great video ❤
Mr Rhys, Mr Taylor, greetings from NYC. I have a question; is it normal for wax to change consistency with the weather? In winter it gets dry and crumbly in summer its gets sticky.
Thanks, love your channel
They've answered this before and yes, it's normal. Simply because the air is dryer in the winter and humid in the summer. Same reason why they see more fungal infections during summer months too, the higher temps and humidity are the perfect breeding grounds for fungus. Hope this helped.
Thx
@@terriwetz6077 it did thanks, must have missed that video.
Very true Mr B, ideally an Audiologist or Certified Nurse would be the best choice💗👍👏
My ENT or his nurse cleans my ears. I've only had an Audiologist test my hearing.
Hi Rhys and Taylor it's everybody!
You both always pick excellent patients to share…what catches your eye to make you want to share with us?
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
LUV YOU GUYS 😁🤎🤎
Our ear guys in the U.S. don’t clean ear canals. Rather, they sell you hearing aids to blast amplified sounds through the wax. Takes less time and they make more money.
Australia audiologists don’t appear to clean ears either. Twice now I’ve seen it first hand that they will prescribe hearing aids without so much as looking in the ear. In fact one audiologist said to me she doesn’t clean ears. What’s that all about?
That first ear canal had enough cellophane like keratin to wrap a gift!
My tortilla chips taste different now, but not bad.
How painful is this procedure!?😮
Why are your photos so small. Great job on video
Why not send the patient away for infection treatment and wait until it clears up before wax removal? Didn’t it hurt manipulating her ear with the infection?
The pinna is the outside of the ear.
The hospital consultant did the suction on me on Saturday and he rushed. He created a suction on my entire ear like a plunger and ohhhh he hurt me so much.
Please write a letter to the hospital and report them. A patient advocate can help, too.
Oh no that must have been really painful, hope you feel better now xx
@@saritataylor4235 I wouldn’t know how. I’ve just lost my 29yo at old brother last week, I’m not strong enough to fight, but he gave me an ear spray and said it looks like I have perforated ear drums or sucked in drums. He told me to keep my ears dry. I put the spray in and I was in tears. It was excruciating pain. I’ve had a blocked ear and earache since last night when I put the spray in.
@@jennarayner4727 it was so painful and every time I jumped, he kept going saying you’re alright, you’re alright! I blooming well wasn’t. He got a massive hard lump of wax out in about 3 minutes. He said I have sucked in ear drums and or perforated ear drums. He said there was infection too, so he gave me an ear spray. I put the spray in last night and it was absolutely excruciating pain. It was hurting me for so long. I’ve had ear ache since. I will never use it again.
@@jodieduckworth1544 Really horrible person to do that to you. So sorry. I hope it will be better soon
You guys had a rough day yesterday.
You two are amazing. 😊😊😊😊
New word of the day: pinna
Yeay for the Dynamic Duo! 😊
my question is how does psoriasis and eczema get inside the ear canal?
Both conditions affect the skin and the ear canal is lined with skin.
❤❤❤YOUR CHANNEL!!!
Neal has launched a campaign!
I would ONLY let pros like you guys poke about in my ears.
Not receptionists with a few hours experience.
Not electricians.
Just highly trained & experienced pros!

What is a Pinna?
The "satellite dish" part of your ear, on the side of your head. In the US it's called the auricle.
What is the pinna?
Outer cartilage
The whole of the external part of the ear.
