Detangling is like a huge fight for me. That tip about holding the ends while scrubbing the roots is a BIG help. Definitely will be doing that from now on. Thanks Sis.
I was doing it all wrong 😭😭 that’s why I had a hard time detangling and so much breakage. Also because I didn’t have enough patience lol. Thank you so much for this!!!! ❤
This is crazy helpful for me. Thank you for the information. I have my mixed (AA / White) daughter for the summers and by the time she gets to me, her hair is crazy tangled. Her mom is AA and wears a fade style low cut because she hates doing her own hair. She washes my daughters hair maybe once a month if she's lucky. Every time I try to talk to her about my daughters hair, it turns into an argument because she says I don't know what I'm talking about. Ever since out divorce, I've tried to keep her hair moisturized when she is with me, but I always run into issues detangling and parting. Everyone can see her hair is too damaged and dry except her. I spent over 3 hours in the bath with her trying to detangle but I got nowhere. My fiance tried to help but when we got to scalp, it was too overwhelming. We are planning to try again in a few days when she is off from work and have more time to get it done. I'm going to "attempt" to follow your tips and advice and hopefully get it done as gentle as possible. She does have a VERY tender scalp.
Do you have a natural hair salon where you live? Maybe you can take her for a wash, treat, detangle, and get her hair braided, so by the time your daughter comes back to you, it will be time for her to get her hair braided down again. While she has the braids in, her hair can be washed or conditioned and rinsed. I usually keep my braids in 1-2 months, but I know some people who keep them in longer, with little breakage. However, this would require you to maybe carry her to the salon more often than when you have her in the summer if possible. :)
ugh same here with the the tender scalp aka tenderheaded im 17 now and ive grown out of my screaming, crying, and running away from my mom phase but sometimes the tears just roll out uncontrollably lol
This was extremely helpful! I have short 4C hair, and while I've gotten better with detangling, I would try to do it all in one session, then get tired and eventually break my hair off a bit. I'm never going back to that! Thank you for these steps!!!
Starting the detangling process in the pre-poo process is KEY, especially for me bc my hair is so dense/thick. Recently I’ve gotten really good at detangling though so wash days in general have become a lot less stressful for me. And I have to thank you for that bc you helped me establish a routine that WORKS and now I enjoy washing/taking care of my hair. So thanks Jenn!!
Omg I'm so glad I found you, finally something that's starting to work for me! I detangled today using this method and I FINALLY DIDN'T RIP OUT MY HAIR. It gets so tangled and matted. Now I can do this journey the right way! Thank you!
Thank you so much for this video! ❤️ I thought it was just me having to continuously detangle my hair throughout the entire washday process. I was also very nervous about how much shed hair was coming out but seeing your hair seems pretty normal. I’ve learned to work in sections and definitely not to rush!
I appreciate this video and your transparency about shedding hair because that is the most stressful part for me as a 4c girl. I definitely need to start washing my hair in sections though lol. Thanks for this video!!!
Try prepoo with oil, castor oil and Brahmi oil is great. I then wash with Hello Hydration shampoo while my hair is in a bun. I take it down to put deep conditioner in. I also use deep condition products with fenugreek and oils that encourage hair growth. KCurlsys.com has great natural hand made deep conditioners and oils. This has limited my shedding tremendously.
OMG I needed this video for my son's hair. It's down his back now and I don't want him losing length or having split ends and breakage. You are heavenly, THANK YOU!!
Thank you for the video. It was very easy to listen to your gentle voice. I love my hair. No more stressful wash days. God knitted me together in my mother's womb with this hair. I am determined to be grateful and thankful for all of me. Been natural since 2006. My eyes are open to my true beauty. I refuse to go back to sleep!!!
This is exactly how I detangle my hair, except I used larger sections during the wash/condition process. I'll break them down to smaller sections when it's time to thoroughly detangle with the conditioner in.
Sis, the length!!!!!! 🙌🏾 You can really tell there's growth & length. Thanks for the video, honestly it really is helpful💯I CANNOT wait for the tutorial for the Bantu Knot out! Much love from Kenya 🇰🇪 💞x
i started finger detangling very recently and can I say I absolutely love it. I too do not even bother conditoning unless I am not in the mood for deep conditioning that week which is very rarw. My hair just never behaves the same unless I deep condition and specifically in the shower now. Plus I just love the way my hair feels. I work in four sections and preepooing is my best friend
My hair always break when it is long another to be detangled, I just dont know how to deal with my hair, this makes me so sad, every year and half I end up cutting my hair because of the breakage due to bad detangling methods. Thanks for the video, I will just this. Bisous
I actually feel so validated about the tangle teezer- I couldn't figure out why on earth I was getting breakage at my roots and more split ends. Switching to hands + Unbrush. Great video
@@JennJackson now that's news to me... Hmmm I may try that. I was always under the assumption you prepoo only slightly damp hair, let it sit under a cap, then proceed to wash. I saw a technique where they sprayed their hair, put a light coating of olive oil, finger and comb detangled the hair, then set it under a cap cuz oil will mess up pillows. Then the next day while the hair was still in twist washed the hair, followed by adding deep conditioner for 30 min - hour ( detangling if needed). All that to finally rinse and add moisture and sealant (order based on preference) and style.
Try the Felicia Leatherwood brush! It’s amazing- I used to have the amazon version, and it’s not even comparable (you can get it in Canada through Curl Bar). I use it with conditioner in my hair and it’s so quick and easy.
You have ALOT of patience to take each twist down to shampoo it. When I wash my hair I don’t unravel the sections during shampoo. I only unravel when I condition.

Thanks for the video! I personally don't think there's any way we (4c) can have zero breakage. I do however think we can minimize it though. Great tips!
great tipss! this is everything i would recommend to fellow 4c sisters as well. especially the part of detangling in each step of the wash day from pre poo
