We’re wrapping up our covers series with 2001 by Carla Geneve! Carla is one of the best songwriters in the country and recently took out WAM Song Of The Year for this tune. We adore her music and were so excited when she agreed to come help us record Lately last year. Since then she’s come up and sung it live at a bunch of shows with us and it’s always a ripper time for us (and hopefully you?).
We’re big on the idea that some of the most influential music to an artist is often the stuff your mates are churning out and Carla is a prime example of that for us. 2001 is such a gut punch to the feels and if we could ever do half as good a job of conveying that kind of emotional weight and relatability in a track, we’d be pretty chuffed with ourselves.
Side note- this tune has the same chords as Anthem Part Two by Blink 182 (aka the greatest album opener of all time) and mucking around in between takes of this is what lead to that lil intro you hear at the beginning of all these cover videos. Could this song be any more perfect?
