Oh, good grief! I have been trying to understand poles and steps for YEARS! This is the very first time that it is clear. This must be why people who finally understand something they have struggling with are pictured with a light bulb above their head - it feels like illumination. Thank you so very much.

Oh my goodness!!! THANK YOU 🙏! Finally, a video that EXPLAINS clearly, and SHOWS clearly and simply how to do the basketweave stitch! I had given up trying, because every other explanation or video I’d seen was confusing and unclear. You are a gifted teacher. Thank you so much!!! 😄

Wonderful video to understand, showing each step with her zoom focus on her canvas!
Best teaching video I have seen!
Thank you so very much for your efforts explaining how to incorporate different stitches.

Thank you for an excellent video and explanation! Just like a lot of other people, this is the first time I've heard of poles and steps! Another excellent point you made is to stop and rethread before reaching the top or bottom of the pole or stair. I've noticed on the front of my needlepointed canvas where I've not done that and it is visible on the front of the canvas. That won't be happening again!

I started a project before watching this video. My threads are climbing up the "poles" then down the "stairs." It still works as long as you keep going in that pattern.

I really don't understand the concept of why you have to go up steps and down poles. Why does it matter? The stitches cover the intersections, so who's going to know if you climbed the pole and went downstairs? What am I missing?

One reason it matters is because this type of stitch helps prevent your canvas from getting distorted as you work it. Another benefit of this stitch is that it helps prevent ridges in your work.
