  • The Mingda Magician X is designed to be an easy-to-use 3D printer that is packed with features like silent stepper drivers, dual Z threaded rods, a direct drive extruder, and more. Mingda sent me this printer to evaluate, and I was impressed with the overall experience. I made this video to focus on the strain gauge leveling of the printer, but if you're interested in a more traditional review, I highly recommend the review by ‪@ChrisRiley‬.

    So well explained! I know it’s a cost bump, but it is such a frustration reducer and time saver. I know first-time 3D printer owners who have struggled for a long time just to get a first print because they can’t get the bed leveled. Industry standard, i so agree! Excellent video, as always!!

      Thanks! I totally agree, it can save a lot of time in the beginning!

      All is fun and games till the sensor goes kaput and you have to contact Mingda to get the spare parts and they have taken the printer out of production.

    Auto bed leveling is absolutely worth it, even if it is just adding a bltouch to a machine that you already own. It improves the reliability of the machine so much.

      Completely agreed! Even if you don't use it every print; it's definitely handy to have after you've made some modifications!

    Thank you a lot for this review. I'm totally agree with you. I have Anycubic Viper and never have problem with bed i remember 1 or 2 time i run the bed leveling.

    I love surface-mapping "ABL" and have appreciated it since I got my Prusa (despite the requirement of doing a z-offset).
    That said, I do wonder about the flatness of a bed if that much undulation happens on the Z. My Prusa generally is flat enough that there is considerably less movement on the leadscrews across the build plate.
    In any case, I love this kind of ABL and hope one day my printer will have it!

    i think auto bed leveling is definitely worth it, but a good implementation is what's really going to make 3D printers feel more accessible. Also, I loved your point that the best solution is the one the user is least aware of, great video!

      Right? It should be like charging a car battery; an automatic process that occurs whether you are aware of it or not!

    Well explained but you should highlight the failed prints meaning filament wasted without ABL. With long print times or dimensional accuracy the issue - generally both - the cost of wasted filament quickly overcome the extra cost. And you could easily add silent steppers, 32 bit Marlin 2.0 firmware and more to why this is a great price for this out of the box 5 minutes and you are printing. Great video, mate.

    I have the same printer ? Do I have to have a laptop to do my prints even I have a 2.0 creality box

      Cool! You’ll need a device capable of creating print ready files for the printer!

    Why isn't there a bed-leveling method that can adjust the bed itself as opposed to compensating on the Z axis?
    Bed leveling is a pain... when my friend talked me into buying a 3D printer he said "you only need to level it when you move the machine." In reality, I have to level it every time it cools down. BL-touch helps a bit... but I had a lot of weird trial and error in the beginning. Even so, it doesn't work if the base leveling moves loses its leveling beyond certain tolerances.... so I inevitably still have to manually level it albeit less frequently than without.
    P.s- The Magician X is quite exciting to learn about.

      @AndrewSink  2 года назад

      Hmm, that's a great point. Moving the bed might be tricky, as adjusting a bed that moves in the Y axis means that the "mesh" of peaks and valleys would also move relative to the extruder, right?

    • @DJRonnieG
      @DJRonnieG 2 года назад

      @@AndrewSink the positional changes in the Y-axis should be accounted for, just as it is when using BL touch. I mean, there must be a reason why nobody has mounted low-profile stepper motor beneath the 4 corners (as opposed to manually loosening and tightening the screws and springs). Maybe you're on to something but I'm still surprised nobody has taken a crack at it.
      The way I imagine the ideal scenario: the nozzle and probe goes to each corner and under each corne is a stepper motor instead of a human hand listening and tightening the adjustment screw. Maybe it does all 4 corners 3 or 4 times since lowering one corner sometimes causes the opposing corner to rise.
      After that, then it can do a regular mesh leveling. From what I figure it's probably just too much of niche project. The work performed on one machine would perhaps be more difficult to implement on other machines. Meanwhile, mesh leveling basically works the same on different printers, I guess.
      Maybe I'll post a question about this with my example to the 3D printer subreddit to see what else I might be overlooking.

    All fun and games until you need a print with perfect flat surface.
    ABL is just a bandaid!
