  • HILLEBERG ENAN Review | 1 PERSON LIGHTWEIGHT Solo Tent for Backpacking
This is a profound tent review of the Hilleberg Enan which is a lightweight backpacking solo tent. Hilleberg Enan is a lightweight hiking tent but still a 3-season tent. An ideal backpacking tent for one person.
We bought our first Hilleberg Enan a few years ago and have now several and use them on our summer and autumn hiking trips, both ourselves and for our guests.
We have used Hilleberg tents for over 20 years and used them all seasons both as trekking tent and on our longer dogsledding winter expeditions. We have already made some other one person tent reviews such as Hilleberg Akto and Hilleberg Soulo but also of the Hilleberg Allak 2 person tent and more reviews will come.

Excellent review, as always, Matti. The angle of the peg placement had never even occurred to me until watching this video. I've never actually used the standard supplied pegs. All of my camps using the Enan, so far, have been on on peat moorland. You need different pegs for this type of terrain. The first two of three inches are loose mossy soil and therefore I use either delta, or 10" tornado shaped pegs. Absolutely essential for my pitches.

    • @JOKKMOKKGUIDERNA

We also use different pegs. Normal pegs, nail for frozen ground or ice and the big snow pegs. Interesting with this different solutions we need in different places.

I normally add big heavy rocks atop the pegs instead of longer pegs. Here in Nevada, I can always find big heavy rocks. Plus I always stake out two supplementary guy lines attached to the end of the tent facing into the wind.

Really clear and useful review thank you. I have an Enan and I agree with you. I find the lack of a top vent limiting because in rain you can’t keep it open. And in big winds I have found it windy inside because the end flaps don’t seal the tent, and the wind then blows into the bed area through the mosquito net door. But it’s great for better weather, and will survive bad weather. I use the four additional guy points at the corners to make a taut pitch. And I use Red Label V pegs as I don’t find the micro Y pegs supplied very nice or long enough. But a great light weight strong tent overall.

Thanks for this review of a newer Hilleberg solo tent. The triangular ends are copied from the Tarptent MOMENT DW, an improvement on the AKTO design.
The TT MOMENT DW has 2 doors and 2 vestibules. MUCH appreciated for several reasons. I ran my optional Crossing Pole UNDER the fly, securing it with a double-sided Velcro wrap (shortened electronic cable wrap0 sewn inside the fly at the exterior Xing Pole strap reinforcements. You need to shorten the Xing Pole 5" to do this but you get much more fly support this way.

Thank you for this detailed review. Usually I prefer selfstanding tents. It would be difficult to pitch it up via my mountain hike above the forest line next summer 2022. However your very honest review gave me a better understanding about some features of using this tent. Will see. Probably I would consider to purchase it, because 1.2 kg total weight and Hilleberg's quality are good arguments for that. Unfortunately right now there any Enan in sport shops in Russia right now, I didn't find it. Good luck to you!

The tent pegs are very stable and durable and they can deal with stones or hammers if needed. And yes, the Enan gets sold like hotcakes. Huge advantages and minor disadvantages for 1.2kg. I had the Akto and the Enan at home and finally took the Enan. That was a good decision.

I've had my Enan for six or seven years now, and think that I have the lighter weight version that they manufactured at first. I value all the little details that show that the product was designed by someone who actually uses the product and have the mesh inner and the footprint for it. The footprint I got not for extra puncture resistance but for how much less condensation I get on wet ground and for the ability to skip the interior being put up sometimes, though I rarely do. The only negative in my case is the fiberglass pole. It is pretty easy to take out, but then I'm the sort of person who would quickly lose it. I do a lot of bicycle and motorcycle camping and that pole makes it more challenging to pack away in my hard bags and panniers. But what a great tent it is. It is far stronger than any of my Big Agnes or tarp tents are/were and the same goes for any other lightweight tent. One has to use it to really understand the good points of these tents. And support is second to none. The only other tent I'd buy in the future (and I buy a lot of tents) is the excellent Durston product line.

I have the kerlon 600 version which i bought in 2016. Been using it mostly in the Alps and in Sweden. It can handle high winds very well eventhough this is probably the weakest tent Hilleberg has ever made. I also make use of the extra tie out points on each end, and always pitch perfect. Because i have been in an unexpected storm a couple of times, in the mountains in the middel of the night, i basically make sure the tent is always nailed to the ground. The biggest problem i have with this tent is that it doesn't have enough headroom for someone who is 187cm tall. When there is condensation you need some serious yoga moves not getting wet. Would be nice if it had a couple of extra centimeters. Otherwise perfect tent. Love the layout.

The main reasons why I bought the enan:
    1. Fast to pitch (single pole)
    2. inner tent stays dry when pitching during rain
    3. Enough space for one person
    4. High quality, lasting for a lifetime
I was first a really worried about condensation issues, as I have read some horror reviews about it, but I always found myself dry the next morning. The outer tent seems to always getting quite wet on the inside though, but the inner tent on the inside was always completely dry. I'm always using the official footprint.
    I love the tent 😊

I hiked the Continental Divide Trail with it. That trail is pretty dry and condensation wasn't often an issue. But when there was condensation, I had it in the inner tent, too. Not that I had condensation when the other people didn't have some and condensation was never a deal breaker (except once, my bad). But condensation is an issue you have to adress somehow, at least regarding to my experience.

I have never seen anyone doing a review of the Enan mention the two guy out tabs that exist on the tent at both ends. I've to them rigged up with a loop of elastic cord and some zing it line and sometimes stake the mid sections out. It helps a bit with the tent sagging due to water absorption.

I’m looking for a lighter weight alternative to my TN Ultra Quasar (3.6kg) with a side opening door and large vestibule to store my folded Brompton bicycle (I know it fits from watching Susanna Thornton YT, she has an Akto) or alternatively a 2-person tent so I could have it inside next to me, to go cycle touring in the UK with my Brompton bicycle.
I’d read an option to create a temporary vent using a plastic clothes peg from the Weston.front Wordpress blog, simply open the fly from the top down to the desired level and attach the clothes peg over the zip and the back of the peg will hold the fly open.

Thank you for your detailed review. I was thinking of getting an Enan for quite a long time now. I do and plan a lot of long solo fjell hikes with my dog (shoulder height around 47 cm, weightt around 13,5 kg) and im looking for a tent that is lightweight but also solid so i can use it on padjelantaleden, nordkalottleden, hardangervidda and so on. Your expierence about using the tent with a medium sized dog really helped me. If I get you right you sleep with the dog inside the inner tent, right? So the dog sleeps in the small triangle on the opposite of the vestibule. Because thats what i was thinking what should work with my dog. I mean, i could also let her sleep in the vestibule but i would prefer her to sleep next to me in the inner tent. She is used to sleep in tents and usually does not move during the night. I know that this tent could probably meet my needs eventho i won't have like a huge amount of space. Do you think the Enan works for my plans, especially sharing the space with my dog and the though fjell weather conditions? Would be really grateful for your opinion. :-)

I have a dark green Enan that I bought in March 2020. Two months earlier Hilleberg changed the floor fabric to the same stronger material used in the floor of Akto's. You're right, at this time Hilleberg has an approximate 9-12 months wait B4 your backorder will be made. Your right about the difficulty of fastening or unfastening the vent materials which would become even more difficult at night or during a storm.
I keep the footprint attached to my tent because I like a floor covering the ground in the vestibule area.
Pitching this tent, fly, & footprint simultaneously is THE way all tents should be engineered/designed/manufactured.
Although Hilleberg considers this a 3-season tent, I know it is stronger than some so-called 4-season tents made by other manufacturers. Having the fly come all the way to the ground is what I wanted. I didn't want a so-called 3-season tent where the fly leaves a 3"-4" space between the fly bottom & the ground.
My Enan has reliably provided me with shelter from ferociously strong gusty winds, all night that I staked out with big heavy rocks on top of the stakes & had no concerns that my tent material would be torn, or that poles would break, or that my tent stakes would be pulled out of the ground.
I've said this B4 & I say it again; the Enan is a stronger 3-season tent than the majority of other brands of so-called 4-season tents.
11 minutes into this video & I noticed a red Akto in the background.
You made no mention of the 2 supplementary tent attachments at both ends of this tent which are designed to be tieout points for 2 additional guyout lines - at both ends of this tent. Those additional guylines helped to hold my tent like a rock in strong gusty winds.
