How To Under-Mount Drawer Slides - Woodworking

  • This video shows a method for mounting those low cost European drawer slides out of sight beneath the drawer. It's a trade off: You lose some depth for the drawer, but you can also make it wider and you don't see the unsightly slides.
The drawers in this video didn't have a bottom, but this works just as well with ones that do. You just have to extend the sides down below the bottom to mount the slide.
This is an excerpt from a longer build video on making a modern office cabinet:

Good idea, if you don’t like to see the slides, of course you have to support the centre of the shelf/ divider the slides sit on, against overloading, me I just close the drawers and mount ‘em normally

This is. a great idea for making under-mount hidden drawer slides without the finicky undercount drawer slide systems I never thought of simply inverting the slides and mounting them on strips of wood like you did. I've been trying to think of a way to make some inexpensive pullout shelves for my bathroom storage but wanted to hide the hardware. This is great solution I can use with inexpensive full extension slides.

Great video John. If I ever attempt to install drawer slides, you have me covered. I usually spend my time fixing the slides someone else has installed incorrectly. Keep up the great work John.

Thanks John, I always enjoy your videos. I enjoy even the subtle humor, for example you didn't record doing the first drawer because the first one is where you make all your mistakes.
    I guess it's funny because it's true 😂

That's just BRILLIANT! I've never thought of doing that!
So simple, so much nicer and allow you to lose less width.
    Thanks!

Good idea! I think it's easier, maybe even advantageous, to find one or two vertical inches rather than horizontally when planning and fitting into a space with walls that can't move. Bonus star for a tip that shows a technique and a design option that may not seem obvious, eh.

Also you can put a shallow drawer between the slides it may not have slides but there are a lot of things you don't have to access often.

I like that these are mounted and inset on the very bottom of the cabinet. Do you know of any sliders that are manufactured for this very purpose? Thanks.

Those slides are so inelegant, hiding them is worth loosing some space ! 👍 And there could even be some secret compartment under the drawers.

    • @victoriabishop1057

And if the bottom of the drawer is not flimsy then heavy items can be stored as well. What would you do having two drawers - top drawer will have to be side mounted???

Please don't think I'm weird, but I agree that it looks better with hidden slides. This is the kind of thing I try to put in my designs. So, I'll probably plagiarize this, oops, I mean utilize a good idea.

John great technique, but you did not talk about ANY measurements leaving us making mistakes and adjustments all over again. particulrly given these are standard slides and measurements would be helpful.

I may make some bottomless drawers. That way everything falls on the floor and I don't have to rummage through the drawer.

I realize this is an ancient video but possibly someone's lingering still lol ...do the cabinet blocks and the drawer blocks that the slides are mounted too have to be the same height? ...and or a particular height? ...thx, dumba$$ from Michigan :)
