Vlogmas Week 4: Starling Murmuration, New Forest OLDEST Tree Walk

Welcome to Vlogmas week 4!
This one starts by taking a trip to the awesome RSPB Ham Wall to watch the Starling Murmuration. Mind blowing, as the flocks of Starling come in to roost for the night they put on the most incredible aerial display. We also had a walk around the reserve to gaze upon the other birds who reside there, Lapwings, Hen Harriers, Great Egret and Cormorants just to mention a few!
The rest of the week sees Kat doing a bit of baking, knocking up some tasty mince pies, and finishes the outdoor Christmas display at her parents. We also pop out to drop donations off for the local food bank, and get out for some local walks.
The weekend saw us go to the wonderful New Forest for a hike around the ancient and extraordinary landscape. We take in the Blackwater Arboretum and the reputedly oldest tree in the New Forest, the Knightwood Oak, also dubbed the 'Queen of the Forest'.

The Murmuration was amazing… what a great view too.
Good to see you supporting your local food bank. Just to think during November there was news of food storages & a shortage of turkeys… which wasn’t right as I’ve seen loads after Xmas in the reduced section in stores.
The mince pies looked tasty. I’ve never made my own.
Good to see you got to go exploring in the New Forest. Beautiful 🤩 totally get what you mean about getting out and seeing something new. Love the geeking out over the trees 🌲
Watching the murmuration has been on the cards for a few years, it was so lovely, I was doing a lot of ooooing and ahhhing 😁
We donate food sporadically throughout the year but have traditionally given more, along with my parents, in early December. Winter pushes so many more people past the poverty line, heat the house or eat, but not both. I've known that feeling myself when I first left home, it's a frightened and upsetting position to be in.
The mince pies were gone so fast, I kept hearing munching noises from the kitchen, I burst in a few times to see a shameful Ceri-Santa brushing crumbs off his beard 🎅
New Forset was amazing! Oh I could have spent all day investigating the trees, what a place, I would definitely like to go back soon🎄🎄🎄

The sheep was furry. The Christmas lights look really nice. 40 is still very young. Nice to have a pan that obviously gets used😳I love minced pies. The ones here in the US don't put a top on. I enjoyed the birdwatching - the murmuration was so amazing. We have much smaller ones here in Alberta with waxwings.
The forest is so cool! Lovely seeing people enjoying just being in the presence of trees. Very wise words - old trees are homes to a wide variety of woodpeckers and other birds too.

Ceri & Kat, the RSPB Reserve looks a fantastic place to spend some time and that was a beautiful evening to watch those thousands of starlings (or skyfish) and all the other birds. I do seem to remember 'wreathcreeping' being an offence back in Victorian times from my history lessons😊 Wow, I thought that all the parental Christmas decorations were finished last time - there is more👍🎄 Always good to think of others, especially at this time of year🎅🏼👍 Loved the selection box of trees🌳👍

Wow! so much wildlife ! The Mince pie looked delicious:) Some beautiful trees in the Arboretum :) Great history on the Queen tree, of course it was a woman ...."Mother Nature" the " Mother Trees", and now the "Queen " Tree...seems appropriate to me! Very nice place to visit!

Oh the starlings...where they are not a native species, they sadly have sure made themselves at home here, nesting in house crevices everywhere. "Sky Jellyfish!" Lots of beautiful wreaths for sure! My grandmother used to make two different types of mincemeat, one with ground round (home ground hamburger) and another with green tomatoes, and both would be heated in the old oil stove and topped with ice-cream! Those were special times. Yours have been the most fun vlogmas to watch ever!! Oh no, that wasn't a little bit of potty-mouth in reference to the Queen's family, was it?! lol Indeed, tea-hydration is the best!! Take great care now and hope you have an amazing 2022!! The murmuration was fabulous, it's been a few years since I've watched one and you've inspired me so I'm going to arrange to go next weekend with my daughter. Those mince pies looked delightful, I bet they didn't last long. The lights turned out really nice, I think the smoke machine was a stroke of genius. From the the thrills of formation flying with starlings and to the old trees in the New Forest - another brilliant vlog giving cheer and good vibes to the world! I am still envious of the fact that you can wear shorts while walking in the village, but even more seeing you eat those delicious minced pies. For some obscure reason it is impossible to buy minced pies (or brandy filling) in my place and I really, really, really miss tasting this gift to the world from the English cuisine! On a more serious note - I do not have scientific fact to back me up, but I have a feeling that people who enjoy green spaces are more likely to donate to food banks and other charities. So I am not surprised that you care about this issue and it reflects well on who you are as a couple! Cheers and stay ready for the year of long hikes staring in a few days!

So many new words for my vocabulary here Ceri and Kat. Murmuration is a cool word and an even cooler sight. If I had another child, I think that’s what I’d name it 😆. As for tea-hydration, I think that should be added to the English dictionary right now if it’s not already there! We love the tall trees walk at Blackwater we went last year I managed to get some cauliflower Fungus from under some spruce there. The cedars and larch there are humongous aren't they?

Loved the memeration too guys. I was lucky enough *(in my old job) to have an office view of the starling mermeration each December over Winnal Moor Nature Reserve in Winnal North of Winchester.
Our office backed onto the moors and overlooked the river Itchen. Every evening in Nov and Dec they delighted us with a sky dance display you would see from your desk. Between 4-5pm before logging off time. Truly wonderful it was.

I really like the Somerset Levels and have had some memorable wildlife experiences there. In fact my first ever otter was down there at Shapwick Heath. I vividly recall an abundance of Cetti's warblers too. I used to be a big fan of Time Team and I recall an episode they did centred on an old trackway through the marshes. It might've been one called the Sweet Track.....🤔. Thanks for sharing a very interesting area and best wishes for 2022.

Very entertaining...action packed...funnily enough i also have a bad ear...i couldnt hear out of the right one for around 2 weeks, but the last couple of days i have slowly been able to hear...Thinking back i remember the same thing happening last year...weird...just weird
Very weird Steve, did you do anything to help it mend, or just time? The doctor said there wasn't anything they could do, so we have been using oil twice daily to hopefully help and a bulb pump, the GP won't syringe anymore, Spec-savers have an ear vacuum....who knew! Wow, you have a few days off YT and then your watchlist is over 85 vids, with two of yours, I cant keep up lol. I remember driving back from Scotland on the motorway once and seeing a murmuration, which was mind blowing, such a shame I could not stop and film it. That was a perfect spot to stop for coffee and connect with nature and a Happy Vlogmuss to you too, only thing missing was a bit of Kat's Christmas cake! Well worth the wait and look at it indeed, awesome sight from nature. Loved seeing the outdoor lights, something we do on an evening at Christmas, walking around the local houses, always enjoy it. One thing I can guarantee, food never goes to waste in our house, only got to look at my waistline to see that :o( I love a mince pie too but funny enough, only eat them at Christmas and yes, they go down in one too with me - they looked great! First time I have seen Blackwater as well and the oldest tree there and although I have hugged a tree before I have never smelt one and Pwhoooooor look at the likens on that, I knew it was a women too....LOL! Hello, I have a few of your videos to catch up on.......eels from the Bahamas in England, wow that is so intriguing. I had no idea that was called a murmuration. I've witnessed it before both on other people's vids and in person. It's amazing to see. Wreath peepers BAAHAA! You are quite the baker Kat! I hug trees all the time myself. People think I'm crazy but I don't care. Love that that park is a sensory space. I love touching everything outdoors, which makes it hard to make miles on some days cuz I keep stopping and feeling the moss, and the bark and the rocks, LOL! Love this series that you guys did. Nice to see a nature reserve and the mermiration of birds gathered together reminds me of when went lido near Venice and the 1000's in swarms of a flying beetles covering the sky and lucky for me they flew to the pine trees in the evening which was directly above my tent on the campsite, humming away all night - lovely - I like the New Forest and my recent Pilgrims Way series of videos I mentioned Rufus Stone (King William II) 3rd son of William the Conqueror was shot with arrow and killed in the new forest while out hunting in 1100AD but have enjoyed your vlogmas videos, I have been watching them all but just not commenting on most as watched on TV rather from phone - Happy New Year to you both - Andy (EH)

lol ET,You would love brownsea island"try to go there next year"so many lovely birds there.I used to have a pet vowel outside my old house in my big fishpond,used to come to me for bits of food"my hubby called it a rat"but it had a diff head and was a vowel.its amazing so many of them and they dont crash into each other,maybe if i was one ,there be this massive carcrash aka starling crash.

Kat tried getting getting us tickets toward the end of last year, sadly she couldn't get tickets they had stopped operating the ferry, maybe a time of year thing. Definitely somewhere I want to visit! Kat has been lucky enough to work on and around the island 🏝
The starlings were great, an absolute spectacle 👓 👌 pleased the music worked too, was worried I left to much footage in, always find cutting things so hard. And if you can't over indulge at Christmas, when can you!? 🥰🤭

I really like nature reserves like this. We have a little one called Low Barns, and it's such a nice little spot. We saw a murmuration the other week coming back from Keswick, it's been so long since I saw one, I nearly crashed the car 😂 thankfully no accidents.

Oh boy, wonder what kind of drama we're in for this week! We keep hoping for you guys to get some snow, but it's almost still as green there as summer, aside from some bare trees. We definitely want to know more about your bahaman eels. Aren't the Bahamas a British place? Maybe the eels followed your sailors back to England and decided they liked the climate better. I'd take English cool weather over the endless heat of the Bahamas myself.
We have starlings here as well. They're an invasive species. Some English person released some in New York back in 1890 thinking how nice it would be to have them around like some shakespeare play, and... well, here we are.
Why so many oranges on the wreathes?
Kat is the opposite of Sarah. Sarah was done with all her shopping in October... I finished mine last week. Fortunately, we do our immediate family gifts on New Year's Eve (too busy with extended family on actual Christmas) so it gives me a few extra days to get my stuff together. Nice decorations at Kat's parents house. Was looking for a taped sign on the Santa... but then this was obviously filmed before that suggestion was made.
that Santa sweater with the yellow shorts Ceri... you're quite a trend setter. Mmmm, hungry GoPro. Have you guys tried out one of those new Enduro batteries they recently came out with yet? Supposed to improve performance greatly in cold weather, and we've noticed it's quite a bit more stable in general... not perfect, but better. Loved the mince pies... seemed like the perfect amount of crunch to them.
Kat REALLY likes her trees huh? Some serious hugging going on in that new forest. Tourism in the Victorian era was something else wasn't it? Really enjoyed seeing all those trees with you guys, that was cool.

Wow. Those starlings flying like that was truly mesmerising. We seen this a few times in Brighton where they fly & settle on the old pier. It was only when you showed Glastonbury Tor that we realised that this place isn't too far away for us to visit. I checked on Google maps but it said that the Christmas period is one of the busiest times so we will leave it until the new year. We loved how Kat whispered b@stard. Lol. The murmuration was incredible, it was busy at the viewing platforms, but you could break free and find spaces at teh sacrifice of minimum height. The murmuration was spectacular. As an American birder, we’re not fond of invasive European starlings here but I would love to see this in the UK. I’ll be in Wales in April but that’ll be too late for this special event, unfortunately.
