  • An intranet should be heavily protected by different networking devices, such as router, firewall, proxy server, honeynet, IPS and IDS. This diagram is an overly-simplified version of the reality. I try to put these devices together in a reasonable order. It is only for teaching and learning purpose as I talk about different devices and their functions in different videos.
    Router is an important layer 3 device. Without routers, there is no Internet. This video will introduce you only one feature of a router in terms of security: ACL - access control list.

    - An intranet is a private network that is heavily protected by multiple devices
    -Router - used to connect networks together delivering data based on layer 3 packets
    - It has a security feature: ACL - control traffic access in both directions - tells the router to allow/deny traffic based on source IP and destination IP, source subnet mask and destination subnet mask
    - subnet masks used to define different segments within a network

    What's the difference between ACL and firewall? I watched both your videos and they seem similar?

    • @sunnyclassroom24
      @sunnyclassroom24  5 лет назад +2

      Firewall will do much more than the router's ACL. There is no difference in terms of this function. It is a router's side job.

      I agree with you Sunny, but let me make a point, today's firewall are stateful firewalls. They maintain a a special table called as SECESSION TABLE, previously in ACL it is stateless where each and every packet is examined. In session table, a secession ID is created when connection is established, when the traffic comes in, it checks the secession ID to ensure it is a legitimate request so as to mitigate attacks like flooding. In ACL it has to be configured for incoming and outgoing packets, whereas in stateful firewalls, it has to be configured for incoming traffic itself..
