    I believe your motion sensor will work better in your office mounted in the upper corner as it is easier for the unit to detect motion than coming straight at it from my experience. You might want to do a quick test to see which location works best. Love your channel.

  • @theSoz
    @theSoz 5 лет назад +1

    You mentioned monitored security. Just an FYI, SimpliSafe offers monitoring services for RVers, you just have to login or call and update the address of your new location. Obviously, this isn't for everyone and really depends on how you travel but if you hop from RV park to RV park it could be a great option. If not, the free self monitoring is always an option too.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад +1

      We simplisafe and asked them about that. If you move infrequently that is an option, but not every week or two (sometimes a few days at a time). Also, right now we are boondocking and there is no address at all.

    • @theSoz
      @theSoz 5 лет назад

      @@ChangingLanes Completely agree. It's not for everyone especially if you boondock or move around alot. Just wanted people to know it's an option. They even talk about it on their website.

    Good stuff. I have Ring at home but didn't get it for free. 😂 - I had a commercial grade alarm system that was monitored by a 3rd party company. It was great but didn't offer the add on cameras and items. Plus I was paying $450 a year. Ring came along, I started with just the doorbell cam & once I saw in their app all you can add I switched our alarm to it. Their monitoring company is spot on with call backs. $100 a year couldn't be beat. I have the 10 pc at home & added a few C02 smoke alarms to get rid of my wired detectors, had 6 outdoor stick up cam battery with solar panels they offer but a few cloudy days they'd go offline. I switched my outside security cams to all POE cams & Unifi Protect but kept Ring for the doorbell & alarm system.
    Off to check your internet and booster vids. I gotta see how all this connects up when you're out camping.

    FYI: If someone really wanted to bypass all of that, they would buy both (since they would have no idea how you are connecting) a cell jammer and WiFi jammer and attach to/near the respective antennas. I bought a cell jammer from China for $20. Once in, disable/attenuate siren via hammer or padded box. Presumably that thing would tell you of lost connectivity, but that may be ignored or you may be too far away. You would have to be dedicated to do all of this, but who knows.
    Love your videos.

    Great stuff, guys. We've used a Ring doorbell cam and several wireless Ring stickup cams with solar panels around our house for some time. They've worked great. We were on a European trip one time and our son and daughter-in-law were staying at our house. One Sunday morning I got an alert and saw that our DIL had gone out to the pool to read. You can talk through the Ring cam and using my best Darth Vader voice, I said, "Stephanie, this is God. Why aren't you at church?" My daughter-in-law must have flown five feet out of her lounger.

    Great review as usual from both of you. One point to bring out, these ring systems integrate great with the Alexa echo system. Couple of examples: 1. You can arm your ring alarm system just by saying "Alexa I am leaving" and it will arm the ring system and go into guard mode. 2. In guard mode it become a listener for your fire / smoke / CO2 / Propane alarms going off and will trigger Ring if they do. It also listens for sound of breaking glass. 3. They integrate with the camera systems, so you can answer the door bell. With the Firecube it will even display the camera on your TV and let you talk to the person. 4. The Echo Show is a little touch screen enabled audio / visual version of the echos, It fully integrates with the cameras and door bells so you can display and talk through the ring system to the person at the door bell or camera. Have one in my Living room and Office and someone comes up to the doorbell it triggers the motion alert and I can voice activate the camera on the echo show, or touch the button on the touchscreen and see in seconds what triggered it.

    I enjoy your channel and watch all of your videos. A quick question I could not find addressed anywhere in the comments. . . What is the step down voltage of the base station? I'm assuming that it is not operating on 120 volts ac, rather is stepped down to a DC voltage. As I primitive camp and do not run AC inverter, I have many accessories which I convert my 12 volt DC power supply to the appropriate voltage of the peripheral. As an example my security cameras operate at 9 volts DC. It was very simple to convert the 12 volts to 9 volts to run these cameras. Why no AC inverter? They typically run at about a 90% efficiency. I do not wish to lose 10% of my power. Happy trails!

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад

      We personally like using the AC power, so we can be notified if power goes out while we're gone. We have a MarCell for that also, but like the redundancy. But, that's just us... I just checked and it's 9v@3.0A, so that shouldn't be a problem.

    A thumbs up to you guys, as you've been helpful big time to the community at large! One thing you didn't mention (so I'll assume you don't have one) is a 'doorbell'? I've always thought a doorbell with a camera would be a good security option for RV's, where if you got a knock at the door in the middle of the night, you could see whom is out there, and from there make a decision if it's someone you know, or if it would be someone you don't want to have anything to do with! Also, if you could see and talk to them via your phone would be a valuable asset! I know Ring has a doorbell setup, but I'm unsure if it's fully waterproof, and wouldn't fall off over time as your driving once it's installed? This is definitely something we have thought of, as we have our Class A diesel pusher in our driveway, and one night had the side drivers window smashed out, where someone then walked through and helped themselves (not that we had anything of huge value) where it was raining heavily that night, so the rain obviously got through the broken window, and they left the door wide open upon leaving! We had no idea until the morning, when my wife was heading out....so a security system would have caught this issue and let us know well in advance upon them entering! Again...unsure on the doorbell option, as it's something I believe I'd find to be a great supplement to what you already have!

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад

      Hi, Dale! We've thought about adding a doorbell or outside camera. We might get the Video Doorbell 2... A little searching on waterproof yields: Is the Ring Video Doorbell Waterproof? Yes - but only against normal rain and splash water! It can’t be submerged completely in water or constantly sitting in heavy rain. I think we'll reach out to Ring about it and maybe test one... 👍🏼

      @@ChangingLanes Thank You for your reply, as for the "Buzz" a number of channels I follow such as "Enjoy The Journey" are talking about Safety, several referring to the two people murdered near Texas, Mexico border & their Rv stolen. Solo Boondocking in the middle of nowhere, rest areas, etc can be a dangerous thing to do. Several channels address how one might handle a situation while in their RV, but I raised the question to one channel, "What If' you are outside just cooking, or just come back from somewhere or any other example and find 1 to 3 guys come out of nowhere and confront you. If boondocking by yourself, it seems this could be one of the most scary and vulnerable times to be in. The person I raised this question to jumped all over me for even asking it, yet I believe it is a valid question as more people are boondocking. The simple answer I guess is if one is afraid this might happen, don't boondock, but that still does not address the problem. Over 1600 people a year go missing in State, & National Parks every year with only a couple hundred found, some dead, some still alive, what happened to the many hundreds never found? I reached out to you as you are one I follow & respect, and when Enjoy The Journey showed your link I thought it was an excellent video. I also have discovered if you do a search on RV safey it brings up a number of RUclips videos people have made, so I have decided not to pursue any farther.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад +1

      Totally agree that remote boondocking is risky for sure! We've only boondocked in populated areas (Lone Rock Beach video will be out in a couple of weeks), or businesses (Harvest Hosts). If we were going to remote boondock, we'd make sure we had friends there also.

    Can this system be localize or does it require internet to function? I don't plan on having an ISP. I like that it's automated with features like z-wave and zigbee so I can pair it up with automated lights. I'm not worried about the camera monitoring as I have own own CCTV. I am not concern with false alarms/pet triggers when I am away. I plan on using it as a DIY/self monitored security to protect my family while we are home, door/window senors are my primary reason for the purchase.

      It monitors power, temperature, and humidity. It does require service (for the cellular connection), which is $99/yr. You set thresholds (high and low) online for both temperature and humidity and define notification methods (text / email) all online. Then, when anything is amiss, both Tara and I get emailed and texted immediately. You can also check the temp and humidity online.

I noticed the VAW-124 patch on your motorcycle vest back in the 2018 Virginia Beach video. I was an AE stationed with VAW-125 back in mid to late 80’s. You guys are “Bear Aces!”

      Yea.. I think you guys were in the hangar next to us! Might have been around the same time. I was with VAW120 for a shirt stint before 124. So, I was in that area from 87-92.
      Thanks for following our journey! 😊

    Excellent video, especially since I am retiring and modifying our Toy Hauler for long term traveling this year. This truly is the perfect setup for any RV and I will probably add it to the home security system I have once we relocate to Florida. Either way, you just sold one 10 piece system and thank you.

    Solo traveler class b. What components do you recommend to monitor people nosing around the exterior front, sides and rear of my class b in my camping space?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад

      Not sure really.. We don't have any outside cams right now. You could put some outdoor cams out there and bring them in when traveling... or the video doorbell might work. 👍🏼

    Good review. I do have some questions.
    1) How long to the device batteries last?
    2) How to you recharge them and how long does it take?
    3) With the security camera, is there storage on the camera or cloud storage?
    4) If cloud storage, how much does it cost?

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад

      The sensor batteries say up to 3 years Those you replace, not recharge. The other items, depends on settings, and how "active" those settings are. For instance on the keypad, it can sense motion and light up the keypad. The camera can be set to detect and record motion, etc. Based on what we've seen, it seems the keypad batteries should last at least 6-8 months. Camera battery maybe 3-4? All of them can be recharged via usb cable.
      The camera stores in cloud and it's $3/mo, or it is included with $10/mo monitoring.

    Thanks for this great info! I just purchased an 8-piece kit for our travel trailer. I do have a question, what length of screws did you use on the door sensors? I really don't understand why they sent screws for the keypad but not all other components :) Thanks!

    Hey thank you for showing this! Using the camera's at my home and business, so I'm thinking after seeing RV's that are parked have either fire, or theft happen. So I'm going pursue this! [Tell Ring your great Sales people!] But this is great for RV. The other thing I thought might be cool would be to have a strobe on the roof of the vehicle in the event of alarm going off as well. Who know possibilities are endless! Thank you! God bless!

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  5 лет назад

      We've been using MarCELL since day 1 to keep an eye on Daisy's environment when we're not home: amzn.to/2zoWKah
      It monitors power, temperature, and humidity. It does require service, which is $99/yr. You set thresholds (high and low) online for both temperature and humidity and define notification methods (text / email) all online. Then, when anything is amiss, both Tara and I get emailed and texted immediately. You can also check the temp and humidity online.
      However, we're hopeful that Ring or someone will come out with a device that integrates with our Ring security system. When that happens, we can get rid of the MarCELL.

    You guys are the best. My wife and I follow Changing Lanes for the past 1 1/2 years. I am wondering if you have any of the Ring outdoor security cameras/spotlights to make sure no one messes with your bikes and other stuff? I have a Grand Design and several Ring outdoor spot light camera, and am trying to figure out best way to mount them without drilling into the side of the RV. Any suggestion would be helpful.

    • @ChangingLanes
      @ChangingLanes  3 года назад

      We have a door bell on the front door, but I might also add one to the rear door.. That's where we secure the bikes to the RV via the steps. You can put up pretty much all the normal outdoor cameras as long as you're willing to take them down before travel. We attach our ring doorbell with command strips.

    Hey guys wonderful overview of security. Once I get my trailer Monday well have better idea on where to place security. Was this Ring system put in before or after the entrance and bay door locks changes.with RVLocks you had a video on. Pick up new trailer Monday, so looking for best bang for the $$$ to just get started. I think on big thing, that is probably inexpensive is some outdoor flood lights coming to front door (my case only entrance) and maybe the opposite side of the rig. But if you could only do one or the other out the gate, would you do the RV Lock replacements or start with the Ring system? Not sure how realistic that everyone has a key to your front door with locks straight from the dealer (builder Grand Design in my case). As always, extremely classy video you two make...I had just watched you about the 3 problems in the 2 move days, and at no time did you seem upset or flustered - will except the bee that went up your shirt. Hope the bit was not too bad and got it removed quickly. Thanks if you can give an answer, it would be appreciated. If not maybe can private message your thoughts. Thanks RVing.Charlie.Brown...
