Sebastian was awesome! What you need to understand that he was only 20 years old when Skid Row came out. A 20 year old with a voice that had so much range and grit! He out sang so many of the singers of the time who older and more experienced than him! One of the best voices of the 80's!

Sebastian Bach is quite possibly the best rock singer of all time. He obviously was born with a great voice, but I have some friends who went to the same vocal teacher in NY years ago, so I know he did the work to build up his voice. Also, as Chris points out here, the personality/character in his voice is key.

As a drummer, I enjoy these videos for a multitude of reasons. For one, it's really great to see breakdowns like this because it's easy to just listen without ACTIVELY listening and not realize all of the nuance. And this is a great way to dive deep and get a better respect for what's going on. But also, it helps me take this mindful listening and understanding approach and use it when listening to and understanding drummers and their choices of phrasing and everything else. Thank you!

Chris, one of the most important concepts I've learned with you is the variance that can be explored with 'placement'. I've always heard about the concept, but never really understood it. Thanks for that! As for Sebastian, what can I say - legendary voice - so nice to see that new generations are coming across this songs and still being blown away by the intensity of it.

I was at work and their song I Remember You came on the radio and when he hits that insane note at the end of the song right away I was like who is this singer. So I did my research and found out it was Sebastian Bach and wanted to hear what else Skid Row had to offer then I came across their album Slave To The Grind and I was hooked. Monkey Business, Quicksand Jesus, In A Darkened Room & Wasted Time such good tunes! \m/

Sebastian is a god-like singer, and I have to say your tutorial and analysis is spot on. Ken tamplin try to take on a Sebastian Bach vocal but he just sounded like Ken Tamplin and gave really weak techniques that doesn't come close to your information.

    • @ilmizarnanda
      @ilmizarnanda 4 месяца назад

I think it's because Ken tamplin really 'anti' reinforce falsetto technique that Sebastian usually use.and of course Ken more of a DIO side when it come to his distortion rather than 80's singing style in his word 'pinching and squezzing' distortion.in my humble opinion.

I especially loved how you compared it back to his speaking voice, which he has been mocked for quite a bit due to its sort of nasal and cartoonish character. Sebastian was the passion and emotion of Skid Row. He’s the one who was out there night after night signing autographs and spending time with the fans. This was after he gave us such an amazingly powerful and emotional concert. The band should have appreciated him for what he was, a superstar. A true rock God with an otherworldly presence. They couldn’t handle the fact that it was so obvious he was miles above them in every imaginable way. Sebastian was a handful, but he was worth the extra effort. I’ll NEVER forgive them for destroying the most magical band of our time.

The funny thing is, you're doing all of this intense analysis of every single thing he's doing - "Ooo, this compression, that rasp, that clean," etc. And I _guarantee_ you Sebastian wasn't thinking about ANY of that stuff when he wrote/recorded it. He was feeling the _emotion_ of the lyrics. Letting his voice deliver his feelings. That's it. THAT'S what made him so good. He _felt_ what he sang. He didn't analyze it. He just lived it.

      Another vocal acrobat.
Don lawrence the vocal coach helped him with placement but he already had singing in his background from his childhood.
As you said his speaking voice in and of itself contains elements.
His ability to compress and fry on high notes amazing.

Sebastian Bach and Miljenko Matijevic are my top 2 vocalist. “I’ll never let you go” by steel heart with Miljenko Matijevic is a very good vocal work.

I really wish you'd allow me to book a private session with you, Chris. I'm 50 years old and been singing my whole life, journeying from developing a horrible case of choralitis in high school, emulating my favorite singers (everyone from Bach and Axl Rose to Layne Staley and Mike Patton), damaging my throat doing harsh vocals wrong, then finally learning how to do it right, etc.
I know the fundamentals. But now I have a big, big problem, and I need someone to help me navigate it. I was just diagnosed with Barrett's Esophagus (thankfully no nodes were found on my vocal cords, though that would have been easier, because they would have just removed them) and I'm clueless as to how to continue singing healthily while navigating this, because things I could do with my voice unconsciously 10 years ago no longer work the same way, and I don't want to do more damage to my cords adapting on my own.

You CAN absolutely book a private lesson with me :) !! Just gotta know where to look! I've been told I'm a candidate for Barretts's Esophagus if I don't keep my reflux under control so I am extremely disciplined and mindful of how I treat my stomach, sleep positions, diet, exercise, vocal tract etc... Let's do a private lesson! Follow this link and enroll in "ULTIMATE" and it includes your first private lesson as well as 4 essential courses that will help you with your vocal therapy IMMENSELY. One of the worst things you can do for your voice at this point is lean into the fact that you "know the fundamentals" and revisit what may be the most seemingly basic techniques, mindsets and postures. Go through the first 3 weeks of the course you get and do everything with a fresh outlook that you are rebuilding your voice! And, then, let's start doing private lessons! LINK:

I got to see Skid Row open for Bon Jovi in 1990 (I was 18). They were so good that Jon Bon Jovi replaced them because the crowds were there for Skid Row. We weren't there for Bon Jovi either. Then in 1992 Ozzy No More Tears tour came to town and Skid Row opened for him, again Skid Row killed it. Wasted Time , Quicksand Jesus and In A Darkened Room also killed. Pour Ozzy vocals had no chance.

In a darkened room has an insane scream so much variance and sustain. You should do a video on Eric Martin!

I am very much enjoying your analyses. I would be very interested to hear analysis of Dimash Qudaibergen’s SOS or Ikenaide, or any of his performances since they are all excellent.
