I Added Animals Into My Giant Canopy Vivarium

- I added more animals into Orchadia, my new giant rainforest canopy vivarium. It was an event I call GAIA II, i.e. the second Great Animal Integration Advent, whose purpose is to seed the treetop ecosystem with life. But with the addition of these new and exciting creatures, the resident caiman had adapted a new diurnal schedule for hunting and exploring on land. This new behaviour put pressure on the sunk skinks, who were now direct competitors for food and territory, forcing me to come up with a really tough solution lest things got grim. In the end, everything changed! Hope you enjoy this Season 2 finale of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series. Ant love forever! This video was shot in 4K Ultra HD resolution.

Spoiler alert! Don't read if you haven't watched the video. Now that the 2nd season of my Ecosystem Vivarium Series has come to an end, it's time for me to address the controversy of this video.
I’ll address the most common concerns I spotted in the comments:
“Releasing the sun skinks was the worst decision. I wish the croc was evicted.”
I have had months to think about their release, even before the caiman came into the picture. Giving the sun skinks, who are wild animals, their freedom back now was the best option in my mind. They were never intended to remain in Pantdora forever, as mentioned in the video. From the start, cycling through the higher tier predators was the plan (See Season 1, Ep 3). The sun skinks were borrowed from nature for learning and had to be returned at some point. I made sure to not tame them so they would still have what it took to survive in the wild just fine, as their species has for millions of yrs. I miss them terribly, too and am still emotionally dealing with their loss, especially Smaug. Thanks for watching and loving them. I wish they could understand how many people were rooting for them from around the world. Perhaps in the future, new sun skinks can make a comeback.
As for the caiman, though I cannot release him into the wild seeing as he is a captive-bred pet and not native, his time will come to also leave Pantdora (more about him below).

“Why have community tab polls if you aren’t going to follow the winning results?”
The polls in my Community Tab are important and helpful for me to see where the AC Family's head is at on certain topics, so they do matter in my decision process, BUT in the end, all decisions have to be mine, because I am the person responsible for the animals' well being, the sustainability of the entire project, the education I choose to put out into the world, etc. I have nearly four decades of experience in general animal husbandry and 3 decades in vivaria. Had I left all major decisions to the mercy of the general public without any interference, many animals would have died by now and the entire project would have surely collapsed.
I also suspect most people voting don't actually follow the series. I wish youtube didn’t remove the in-video poll function from a few yrs back, as they were essential to this channel. I do manage to weed out the voters who don't care and aren't serious by adding joke options, which often lead in the ranks and tell me a lot about who’s actually voting.
Bottom line: the polls matter and do affect the story, so thank you all for participating in the votes as your opinions are super helpful, but in the end, I have to make the final calls.
-
“The caiman will just eat everything in the vivarium now! Everything will die.”
Actually, quite the opposite: All flying insects, climbing prey insects, and smaller invertebrates were not safe from the sun skinks who were masters at finding and catching them. They ate a tonne of spiders, I suspect the first Mantis Green Reaper, Stanley the bush cricket, the first damselfly, etc. With the sun skinks gone, such animals now have a turn to thrive. The croc who is fully ground/waterbound would be unable to catch such creatures unless they wandered close. Again, change in an ecosystem is good and essential.
Remember when our beloved Bush Cricket Stanley died? I was heartbroken then, too. But suddenly, his death gave our vines a chance to finally explode in foliage and grow everywhere which Stanley would not allow while he was alive. I suspect something similar will happen here, where the sudden sun skinks' absence will prove beneficial for the insects of our rainforest. We’ll just have to see.

“You’re choosing to keep the caiman for views!”
For those saying I keep the caiman for views, this is the infamous, inevitable comment all youtubers get when a controversial video they created gets a lot of attention. I can’t speak for other youtubers, but I know my truth. I am and always have been a lover of biology, herpetoculturist, and ant nerd for my entire life, and will continue my hobby whether on or off camera. I don’t decide for viewership because if I did, I would be keeping the sun skinks who were actually more popular on the channel than the caiman, or would be dropping nature content entirely to pursue Mr Beast-type content which is the most viewership-generating. Everything I share in my videos is 100% in the name of my passion and love for sharing the awesome moments, I manage to capture on film while caring for Pantdora and now Orchadia, with you.
I legitimately want to learn more about our caiman, as I’ve never had the resources nor space to own one in the past. I do now and have chosen to seize this unique opportunity to study and document these super interesting animals in a way that is true to nature. He does fit quite well in Pantdora (right now) and deserves a chance, as much as our sun skinks did. There will come a time when he too will be moved out, first into a future swamp vivarium, then my 60 ft outdoor enclosed pond in my yard. For now, let’s kindly give Godzilla a chance.
Bottom line: I am a lover of nature, and learning about different animals in a manner that is governed by respect and responsibility is #1 for me, not viewership. I hope people understand this while watching my channel.
Thank you for reading and for supporting the series! I've dedicated my life to this series now and appreciate you all. It fills my heart up to know that there are still so many people genuinely invested in the stories of nature. So much more is up ahead for us to discover in our giant cloud rainforest world, as I have begun to work on Season 3. Ant love forever! ❤️
PS - In the flying termite scene, what you're looking at are glass sliding doors that are ALL SHUT (and glass windows into my aviary that don't open) and one open door that leads into my kitchen and rest of my home. Leaving doors open where I live is a mosquito and fly invasion waiting to happen. Still don't know how the alates got in, but they manage to do it every year.
I have high respect that you know what you are doing. I love the skinks but the camian is good for taking care of ground pray. While the canopy (as you mentioned in the video) is a refuge for the pray that can climb and fly. I’m not a expert at this but I’ve watched you ever since I was in middle school, so I know that the decisions you make are essential. Watching the first fire ant colony was amazing, and now we are getting full on ecosystems which is insane! Keep doing what you do brother. 🗣️‼️

Anybody who is hating in the comments just doesn’t understand, it’s a cycle and naturally that happens- plus it keeps things exciting. Every single episode is a 10/10.
I live in new orleans and we have formosan termites here and those things will get into anything. whenever they swarm you always see at least a hundred of them inside the house, they come through any little crack in the doors or windows or through the bathroom fans or light fixtures.

I think adding the crocodile was a mistake. He's going to have to get rid of the crocodile eventually anyway, as it's going to quickly outgrow the vivarium.
OMG, HE ATE THEM?! I just started the episode, not sure if I can handle that level of drama before bed!
I'm a sentimentalist; I think he should've rehomed the Caiman and kept the skinks, maybe moving them up to Orchadia temporarily. But it's true, the only constant is change. It doesn't stop just because humans wish it.
*Oh No.*
AC Family. I have some Bad News to report...
They prolly woulda still lived longer happier lives in the vivarium
This series is similar to watching a TV show that you become extremely invested in over time. Releasing the lizards was like killing off a beloved main character out of nowhere, it's definitely going to upset some people. However, It did make a shocking season 2 finale.

Godzilla was always a big gamble. If I'm honest I would rather have seen him moved into a different enclosure and the sun skinks left. It was going to have to happen within a few months anyway when he's doubled in size
I definitely wanted to see the sun skinks stay. He should have taken the gator out. But I understand it's his project.. just sad to see em go
So, 2 things to say to that. First thing, you should listen to the end of the video again to hear his explanation as to why he chose the skinks. Secondly, the caiman is a dwarf caiman that will not grow nearly as quickly. Also he plan on exanding the vivarium further with a swamp section.
he said that godzilla is gonna stay for atleast a year or two but I agree. I think something like a basilisk or a large salamander would have been much more interesting. I do understand his stance since it would be quite hard to make another enclosure for the caiman or relocate it.
I was hoping he would have kept Smaugette at least till she laid eggs.
@@MrVovansimSmuaggette would get lonely and it would be unfair.
But I did expect him to release all the sunskinks together so they can rebond instead of dispersing.
Didn't like how he separated them in the forest
I know a lot of people are upset over releasing the sun skinks but I think that was the better option. Caimans aren’t native while the skinks are. They have a much higher chance for survival out there, and given the fabulous care they’ve grown strong so surely they will thrive. I’ll definitely miss Smaug though. She was so beautiful. Can’t wait for the next season.
So give the caiman away to somewhere else like where he got it from. You can’t add a crocidile into here it’s going to kill everything apart from the crickets and ants, and he did a vote but didnt listen to it
I personally think the skinks have a better chance outside than inside that death tank. Everything in that tank gets brutally killed eventually. At least they are free.
Actually I don't believe that the caiman had become a threat to the skinks, I think the skinks were released for other reasons. There is no way that caiman would have been a threat to those skinks, until it grew at least twice of its current size or grew wings.
@@paulietv2162 I think the reason was the skinks would not hunt becuz of caiman or it was for the safety of the caiman cuz it could get gang banged orrr the snake he might will kill them.

Literally bro
Honestly, I would have preferred for you to keep the sun skinks and remove the croc. It just feels like they were a better match for the setup.
100% the crock will be too big in a few months (unless he only eats crickets for the rest of his life...)
I've been telling people for months that adding that croc was a mistake. The vivarium could never properly contain one and over time the croc would start causing more and more issues. Godzilla's addition to the vivarium just felt pointless in the end
but Godzilla was perfect for the rain forest
Adding the croc was a mistake tbh. That croc species will grow to be too large for the vivarium anyway
He and the other animal RUclipsr that suggested the caiman are fully aware that the caiman will get bigger. The plan was always to put it in his massive outdoor pond system when it gets bigger where it should be fine (and will be kept as a pet, rather than being released into the wild). Honestly, since that was always the plan, he could have released the caiman and kept the skinks in the vivarium. But the caiman is still interesting. For me, I could go either way.
First time I’ve heard someone say “yay go termites” while living in a house with so much wood.
Man, godzilla really feels like he became an invasive predator. The skinks felt more in place than he.
The Frogs will have to go next, because of godzilla...smh
I agree, he feels kinda out of place at this point.
@@frogmanfromthesky2148 Yeah, im not a big fan of the croc
@@Mangobattie No they won't bc the Frogs climb walls and trees. How is a caiman gonna get them? Is Godzilla gonna start climbing walls?
@@WillWilliams-vo4nk No, but the frogs don't stay up in the trees 24/7, they do go to the bottom to eat. And they might fancy a dip in the water sometime...🤡
Id have to say without those skinks, its basically a feeding tank for Godzilla, i actually enjoyed it more with the skinks, because you could add alot more species in there to observe, i think its going to be alot more focused on Godzilla from this point, with many surprises, the Skinks will be missed
I'm afraid that you are right about Pantdora becoming just a feeding tank for Godzilla. Each episode might be what did Godzilla eat or destroy this week and what new foods for him are being dumped in. He only cares about the croc now and not the rest of Pantdora s residents.
^this, it's not an ecosystem anymore now its just Godzilla's enclosure. The frogs and geckos will have to be removed eventually if they aren't to be eaten by Godzilla, all the undergrowth will become trampled underfoot and eventually disappear, Godzilla is going to leave as much destruction in his wake as his namesake.
@danielkosta3134 how on earth could you make a deduction like "He only cares for godzilla and not the reat of the residents?" Genuinely, how did you arrive at that conclusion? It's been only a few episodes since Godzilla was placed in, and he's never had more than a few minutes of screen time per video.
@@thenerdbeast7375you need to stop acting like this is the end of the terrarium. He wouldn’t eat the frogs and geckos because they live on the vines and plants. Also with the canopy added they’ll probably spend most of their time up in the canopy. Also he would remove Godzilla once he’s too big for the tank and add a swamp area or to his large pond out side. Also these are not your tanks or animals. I also doubt you are any expert with caimans and skink’s interacting in terrariums.
I'm a million miles away from being any kind of expert but Godzilla seems like too dominant a predator for such a relatively enclosed environment, and he's only going to get bigger and MORE dominant. I'm really not sure how this will play out. I will miss the skinks.
"3 minutes to speed date, find the love of your life, all while avoiding being eaten" sounds like a great reality TV show idea

Just think how the caimen feels trapped in a tiny little pond used to big lakes and rivers
Frankly, I think a breeding pair of skinks would be more interesting than a caiman.
I was so much more interested in the skinks myself, so sad. :(
agree. Also, after spending most of their life in a tank, I wonder if they will suddenly find themselves in trouble on the outside. I half expected a bird to swoop in and grab it. Also with the skink about to have babies, she will face the stress of having to find a new environment for her babies.
@@jaeserys i think the caiman script is more for a long term investment. sad to see the skinks go though.
The caiman will continue to reduce herbivore populations, taxing our precious species diversity. The skinks were enough. :/
JUst commented the same thing. The Croc is gonna be big soon. Then what? Is he gonna stick his hand in there and loose it? The croc is a Apex predator, its not a friend.
Not me bawling bout our skinks moving on without us haha, @antscanada you did the right thing by them. Keeping your word is more important and they may not be able to tell you so but they appreciate it. You are a good soul

@emma-9957 agreed, I love him for it. Being a gentle soul says a lot about him, he loves us and his channel but he loves these animals more. And I like that
Definitely not, Godzilla would have been removed anyway at some point. Getting rid of the skinks was silly considering they could have lived there very happily.
I think this move should have been voted on. I'm pretty certain we would all have wanted the skinks to stay, and the croc to be put in a new enclosure until you built your swamp vivarium that could connect to Pantdora's water area.
And what of the frogs, the gekos, basically we're gonna be left with crickets, ants, cockroaches, and a snake and a caiman.
Yeah, it's sad, but true. We will get more sun skinks in the future, I'm sure of it.
I am pretty sure there was a pole for that like 3 weaks ago and that croc was voted out. Not sure why its staying in and skinks are thrown out.
@@koleraj618I think it’s to ensure that the Skinks are safe, cause even if Godzilla left, the new snake would be coming in soon, so our trio wouldn’t stay safe for too long. He shouldn't have added the croc!
Agreed, get rid of the Croc, it doesn't belong in pantdora

Agreed, there could have been another apex predator that could have lived along side the skinks but there will never be an apex predator or any medium sized animal that can live with the croc they will always be at risk of being eaten.

Glad to see I'm not the only one who didn't take to the idea of a Caiman in the vivarium. That said, it's a learning process. The vivarium has plenty of life left, and I'm sure that after Godzilla is relocated, better suited candidates can be introduced. Still love the whole build.
Thanks, AntsCanada for sharing the journey with us.
It's not an ecosystem anymore, now it's just Godzilla's tank. He'll have to remove more and more as Godzilla moves onto bigger prey like the geckos and frogs, the undergrowth will be trampled underfoot and become bare and by the time the little bastard is removed, he will have left destruction in his wake like his namesake.
The area around his house isn't Godzillas natural habitat unlike the skinks so he wouldn't be able to get rid of him as easily
@@thenerdbeast7375you make it sound like a 2 month old spectacled caiman is gonna grow into a 2 foot monster in the span of a few months. This type of caiman grows slowly and only eats insects for the first year and a half of its life and generally takes 4-7 years to reach 3-4 feet long.
Really the only reason it seems he did it was because of the emotional attachment to them. If it’s truly an ecosystem then they will have to compete with other, larger predators. That said he did explain at the end of the video how cycling the predators was always a plan. And the caiman wont be there forever
Ecology is by far one of the most underrated subjects of biology. Schools often prioritize the smaller pieces of the puzzle like plant and human physiology, so kids never end up learning about why it's important and how such small and sophisticated systems fit into the grand scheme of life on the planet. It becomes frustrating to see students turning away from biology because they think it just involves memorizing fancy facts, because nobody bothered to show them how everything connects. Still can't wait to see what else happens as this place grows and continues to flourish :)

it will take a couple years for Godzilla to outgrow that tank, at that point he will be ready to move into the swamp one he said he was building next. The caiman is going to outgrow Pantdora soon enough and need to be moved out anyway, but the skinks won't ever be too big for Pantdora. I would've liked to either see Godzilla moved out to your pond early, or have the skinks in a different enclosure until Godzilla was too big, move Godzilla out to the pond, then move the skinks back in. But, what's done is done, and there's no use dwelling on it. At least you were able to make a good lesson for everyone from this experience.
agree
Noone has to leave. A croc will have a difficult time catching the lizards and the lizards will reproduce, so it's not the biggest problem if eventually some of them get eaten, it's even necessary.
@@ThaGuille That's actually something I was thinking about as well. Predation of larger animals in the enclosure would be a good teaching moment.
When Godzilla gets too big and needs to be rehomed, bring back the sun skinks!
Those 3 are gone forever the dumb croc evicted them from their sanctuary 😭
It won’t make it right, but it‘ll be nice to see sun skinks again once Godzilla is out.
How do you hope he do that? He won't even recognize them and they might have being dead by then to bigger and more aggressive predators or forces of nature.
Whereas his backyard is too big to hunt down three sunskinks that might have ventured into the abyss in no time
He could had release them together in one go so they would re-bond in their new large ecosystem.
Didn't like how he released them in batches and consequencially severed the long lasting bond they had shared in the Pantdora together.
Wonder if they might wait to bond with each other or just start a new life thereafter.
@@idehenebenezerAgreed. He messed a lot of things up that would benefit the animals.
Guys, stop being so mean about the croc being chosen over the skinks. In the wild, new apex predators would overpower older ones. Though it did break my heart to see smaug go.
Only AntsCanada can make me cry about Sun Skinks. Mostly because no one else has ever given a Sun Skink an emotional story arc before but I digress. Thanks for the memories our Golden friends. May the wild be more fruitful and safe for the remainder of your days.
I almost cried aswell but I expected them to be eaten so atleast they are Free
I cried like a friggin crazy person smh
I cried twice
A very rare disappointment in my opinion. This series is incredible and I can’t wait for season 3 but the addition of a croc to the vivarium has seemed to completely disrupt the ecosystem. The purpose was to allow life to go on as it normally would in the rain forest and having the sun skinks as the apex predator seemed perfect. The fact that we will no longer get to watch them grow and breed is a huge disappointment.
And one day the croc will likely have to be removed.
Yes but change is inevitable, once godzilla is gone something new will replace him and so on. You have to be open to change.
Not to mention it has consumed so much of the episodes. I’ve found myself watching the last like 5 episodes not nearly as engaged between the croc, building the canopy, etc. We used to get so much more footage of the ants & bugs, and what they were up to. It just isn’t feeling quite the same for me lately.
He literally addressed this in the video. In nature, new predators come in a displace smaller ones. It's not about who was first or what's fair.
Surprised to see the sunskinks go when the croc was voted off 3 weeks ago.
The croc provides more long-term content, and thus long-term revenue. Keeping the croc and documenting its growth and journey was a financial decision for the channel.
I think he said it was an ecosystem thing the croc is domesticated. It’s only now learning to hunt in more natural ways. If it was released it would probably just die because the food it’s being fed isn’t cramped and has more directions to run
I was on the damn edge of my seat waiting for Smaug to be eating crickets in Dragon heaven. Then relieved to find he was actually better off! You are a true story tell my friend ❤️
I dont get why u moved the sun skinks, they have far less chance of survival in the forest where they are definitely not apex predators and have no experience surviving vs Aerial predators.
I don't think the skinks were born in captivity. I believe AC caught them wild already so they had survival skills.
My thoughts exactly
What are you talking about he literally caught them from the wild. They are a native species to his area. They’ll be fine.
He literally caught them in the wild.
Agree 100% They have a very high chance of being killed. BAD DECISION
