- How I went from a 9-5 electrical job and started a handyman home repair business, and am killing it! Looking to help others do the same!
At 47 it’s never to late to start. Leaving banking and going back to what I grew up doing. Thanks for your insights.
what is it you do?
I'm 52, it might be later in life but think of all of the life experience we have now. It's scary but I'm determined to make it work.
I work a 9-5 and I'm grateful for it but I want my time back so I can go sing Opera and pursue my musical dream. I'm also a licensed Realtor both in Commercial and Residential and have an idea for a Handyman marketing service based on my experience as a Realtor. Thank you for this inspiration - I believe!
9 children and you pulled this off! Kudos and congrats man!
Thank you! Sink or swim baby! I had to swim 😅
In business for yourself is the only way to that go!!
I like this video. I remember when I decided to quit my job. I was 35 and scared but only for a very brief time. Wished I started earlier, but I do not regret all the experiences I had leading up to that time because, it was superb preparation. Just didn’t know.
I absolutely love it! Wouldn't have it any other way. Like you I only wish I did it earlier.
Hey brotha! I’m in the exact same boat at the end of my two weeks from apartment maintenance and getting my business papers from the state back! Glad I found ur videos inspiring me to keep going hope we can stay in touch would really like to meet and talk with some people who have been doing it before me for some advice!
Absolutely! That's why I'm doing these for guys like us!

Wow man, your dad better be effing proud of you sir. You're a boss.
Haha thanks bro!
9 kids.
Holy heck. You can do it just for fun ya know? Lol
Love the content.
😂😂nice😂😂
Spot on man! Been thinking doing same thing with a family of 7. pick up jobs contractors pass on. Needed some things done around the house and couldn’t find anyone. Did it my self and figured I can do this for money. I Plan on leaving my commercial construction job in 10 months. Thanks for words of encouragement. God bless
You’re welcome! It’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.
"Needed some things done around the house and couldn’t find anyone. Did it my self and figured I can do this for money"
Same here.
Just starting my own. Great to listen to your story. All the best to you man!
Thank you! Love to hear it!
Awesome my friend keep up the good work I'm about to get into it too. I'm a maintenance worker at apartment complexes and I've learned the same thing you have. I never liked electric but that's what I do now. I'll update a whole house With no problem faucet toilets everything texture walls yeah the money's good.. good job keep up to go work..
I’ve been working nights as a electrician and it’s killing. I really dislike working nights. But I got an opportunity to work with a handyman in the day time and I’m going to take it! I feel really happy about it even though it will be less money. But who knows it could go really well!
Im ex graphic designer (web and DTP) and right now im starting my handyman service business. So im very excited and hope all will go right way ;) Greetings from Czech republic
That’s awesome!
33 father of 5 12 years experience in construction also currently a large roofing corp for men and supervisor. Your an inspiration and I’m not per saying going to leave my job but I am starting my service and LLC and online marketing this spring and I hope I takes off and I can feel confident enough to leave my job
My brother from another mother 💯👍
Love your attitude and glad to hear your story, brilliant stuff 👍
Hey buddy! Congratulations and thank you so much for sharing your experience and at the same time encouraging words. It’s inspiring, motivating. I already have all my paperwork ready, tools and truck. I’m about to take on this journey and God’s willing it’ll be a success. Keep up the good work and great encouraging videos coming. God bless!!
I would love to chat with you sometime in, in a somewhat similar situation, but instead of an electrical company, my employer is a very experienced handyman and remodeler who pays me very well to be his helper and I'm learning so much. Been with him a year but have done handy work for almost 8 years off and on. Never full time, until now.
He wants to hand down the business to me when he retires, but that is several years away and my wife and I have many goals. I feel like waiting until he retires is doing a disservice to my family because I am confident that I could double my income overnight with a bit of legwork on my end. And he could find a helper cheaper than me easily.
I don't want to ruin our relationship we have, he's a great guy, like the dad i mever had, and has already taught me so much... I just really want to take the leap for me and my family.
Lobe your content. New sub. Blessings.
Josh
*In business for yourself is the only way to go!
I just left years of multi-family to do paint and repair. I’m working for the same people as a vendor for TWICE the $. Lol
That’s a beautiful thing right there brother! Love it
I’m so proud of you going after your own passion. I’m also self employed and I work for no one. But I am also single so I can go anywhere in the country when I want to go work, it would be so different if I had kids.
Thanks for this video! Been doing HVAC for a year and went to school for it for 2 years......... I want to start my own handyman business commercial and residential.
Bro, you sound crazy, but now I'm gonna go through all your videos and look at him. I'm actually contemplating doing this, but I'm already making great money. So even more scarier
Your ethical and hard working. It’s rare to see these days.
Great video, thanks for sharing.
I’m in the same boat. I have my own handyman business I’ve been doing on weekends and hate my job and want to lane but afraid to pull the full time trigger if we are headed into a recession
This type of work will always need done! Every home will always need maintenance and repairs.
Thanks pal. I too am an electrician. Looking to make the move too
Man, what an inspiring video!
Thank you!

How's it going now?
I'm a handyman too duuuuuuhhhh. Money comes to me every day
I have had a few businesses offering to give me maintenance contracts, on a monthly basis, i have no clue how to charge for that kind of work its over my head, but your help would be greatly appreciated
Each our to me at thehandyfamily11@gmail.com and I will try to help you out! I’d be glad to
@@thehandyfamily11 thanks man appreciate you
Man, you give me so much motivation to really put the work in. My wife and I have 4 girls and another on the way. I have no excuse!
Thanks brother!
Inspiring buddy. Thinking about it myself
Thank you!
Electrical is awesome. Whats horrible is undoing 3 decades of mistakes.
Truth!
Thank you man
Awesome story and I'm preparing to head out on my own, but I have one question for you that puzzles me, are u able to have health insurance for your family?
So I get that a lot, I am actually part of an organization called CHM (Christian Healthcare Ministries). It’s very reasonable for large families. We are also use wisdom and good judgment with what we eat, minerals, vitamins, etc. Hope that helps.
Great video- I am also a small business owner in Ohio. Where are you located or what’s your business called?
Cool!!
How did you market yourself? Did you use Craigslist?
Im leaving the dental field to start my own handyman business
Any thoughts on the best way to learn more about the business side of being a handyman? I’ve got the skills but maybe not the business sense.
Read books or listen to audiobooks. I have leaned a ton from that. Also, a lot of people don’t care for Dave Ramsey but just listening to his show and others on his platform can start to give you immense knowledge on how to run a business. I also follow Chris LoCurto podcast. He’s a good one for culture.
Any suggestions on health insurance? How do you handle insurance with such a large family?
Wow thats cool
Do you use a lead company or did you have clients who knew you. I'm ready to start my handy man business but I didn't know what lead generation company 5o go for.
I started with Home Advisor (now Angi Leads). Now I am running on word of mouth and Google. GET Google reviews. It’s a game changer.
When people say do what I want to do , that’s mean they don’t want to do anything 😅
What do you do for insurance for your family?
Hi I got a question what do you suggest to open a LLC if I'm just starting or be a sole propietor
I would do a LLC. Personally
first time seeing you videos and like them, good for you but I have a question do you need a handy man license? maybe you can send me an email, I did work in construction before, know about framing, wall board, some plumbing and electrical but change to the computer industry and know business going down and I'm like you like to work with my hands no more office work
Thanks
Thank you! So in most areas you don't need a license to do basic handyman repairs: drywall, hardware, plumbing repairs, etc. You can check with your local Chamber Of Commerce and townships to make sure. Shoot me an email at thehandyfamily11@gmail.com and I can help out how I can.
When you quit your electric job to start your business did you have a certain amount of money in the bank or did you start it on the weekends
Literally had 10k in the bank. It was scary at first but the healthy ‘fear’ pushed me to succeed. Thank God!
How do you market
Check our my latest video!
What do you do for liability insurance and what does it cost?
Liability insurance is one of the cheapest business expenses. I pay around $115/mo for a million dollar policy.
Did you really say 9 children??? That would scare the hell out of me!
Your 5% of the people succeeding a personal business, congrats
9 kids ? You couldn’t even pull out of a parking spot my guy
Nope, lol I finish what I start 😂
Did you say nine
Was it scary to take the jump to start your own business
There was an element of fear, but I used it more for motivation, rather than let it control me.
Hold up did u say 9 kids. U must live in Utah. Dude pull out. A handyman taking care of 9 kids. They anit wearing Jordans I bet
We live in Ohio. They all have everything they need and more. We have a couple horses on 10 acres. They are doing just fine 😂 And I never pull out! Alway finish what I start 🤭
Heard that. I bet your is pissed but won't say it
@@thehandyfamily11 I'm in Ohio too and plan on starting a handyman business in January. Do you mind if I ask you a few questions?
@@spatdog7 sure! Email me at thehandyfamily11@gmail.com
@@seanmayo206Dude, you need to change your way of thinking.
👍👍😎✌️🤟
IM JOKING
Gotta be great not living in California
I’m terrible with marketing. Who should I hire to help me? Not only that, marketing yourself seems kind of desperate. If someone else does it, then our weird human nature says oh look social proof. Kind of dumb. Please do a video
I will put one together on some simple marketing I do on my own. Thanks for the question!
