    These older buildings even with reno over time, still pose challenges to the members of the FDNY.And the unexpected can happen,a scary proposition here,John.BTW,the clear communication between fire command and other members is remarkable.Excellent job, FDNY,and thanks.

    Man that was close. The shock was there was no warning before it cut loose. I thought for a second you might get hit by some broken bits but it held together. We had a row of stores in the town where our VFD was located. One night we had a big one on the second and 3rd story levels and the chief had the ladder company on the box put a man on the end of the stick and it swept him down the row with a chain saw and he cut all of them down. So a bunch of us got some ropes and dragged them out of the way. I was glad because I was the door man on one of the hose lines. Great video of this one John.

    As a former firefighter in my community, this serves as a stark reminder that there are no “routine” incidents for first responders. Things can change in an instant. Thankfully there were no serious injuries in this incident. Another great job by FDNY. 👍🏻

      When a metal storfront sign falls on your head it usually results in a spine and neck injury that follows you through your whole career. Filling the marquee sign with water from a charged hose line and then doing salvage and overhaul of the water filled sign from the tower ladder caused it to collapse prematurely onto the brothers below. Time for a serious safety bulletin on mode of fire operations at FDNY.

    For all the people who ask why there are "so many people standing around", this is how fast things can happen in a fire. And all those people "just standing around" jumped in and rolled that sign back to check for injured and clear the exit. Good thing they were right where they were needed.

    JJ I was happy that no one was hurt when the canopy fell off the building. I would hate to think it was only being held to the building using 2" electrical conduit for the lighting.
    Looked like someone forgot to anchor the sign to the building itself.

    Did anyone else notice before the collapse, the firefighter hosing down that facade? I did not see as much water coming out of the facade as what was going in. Several hundred gallons flowed. Something every firefighters- especially safety officers should keep in mind- the weight of water that we introduce into a structure.
    JJ- do you remember seeing much water coming out of the facade prior to the collapse?

    • @Q1745
      @Q1745 2 месяца назад +2

      I didn’t see any water coming from the awning but when it collapsed there was also no water that spilled out so it must have gone into the structure I am guessing. I did notice at the very beginning of the video that the top of that particular awning was already tilted away from the building

      The chirping sounds are coming from the PASS devices, (Personal Alert Safety System). PASS devices are worn by firefighters. In the event that a firefighter is motionless (deceased or trapped), the PASS alarm sounds so other first-responders can find them.

    Scary scene!! From what I saw of the collapse, the firefighter that was under the sign, his helmet and Scott Pack deflected most of the debris and the bigger pieces fell further away from the building. Plus the mass grabbing of the debris by the other firefighters definitely helped get the main weight off of the firefighter under it all. His equipment and his brothers saved the day!! But still very dangerous and scary!! And you caught it all on tape!! Once again great job!!

Because when something like that happens, they're the reserve that can jump in right away and try to keep it on the level of a major adrenaline dump...instead of becoming a memorial service.
