  • Everyone talks about a deer sanctuary, but very few hunters build one successfully. Why? Because you cannot build a deer sanctuary unless you follow these critical deer holding ingredients!

If you’ve ever seen an active coyote den, it’s littered with fawn legs and parts. Coyotes are hard on fawns!

For sure... especially where there is very little cover!

    We've never hunted any plot...
Only the line of movement along with a mock scrape every 3-4 hundred yards.
Added 600gal watertank couple weeks ago.
Thought it was 300 until it took 3 trips to fill it.

In our area, back in the 70s we my maybe spotted 10 deer all deer season. The last 3 years I've seen more deer than in the past. I can ride two tracks for months and maybe see a handful of deer. The deer are more nocturnal now. My camera confirms that the deer are there hiding in plain sight.

My video of the two coyotes chasing the fawn and then the two Doe chasing the coyotes... My favorite video of all time. I know it's the cycle of life, but that Doe on your cam looking for her fawn is heartbreaking.

Im trying to make my land a sanctuary. We only hunt it when the weather is right. We had a few fawns last yr. We had bucks in summer and fall and winter. We are trying to plant switch and just improve the habitat

Off the subject a bit, but... one thing I've noticed about your Whitetails is they don't have no where near the amount of ticks as these in the South. Is there anything one can do to help the deer with this problem? I know control burns would be a plus, but I am limited on the amount of deer that actually reside on my property. My wife said that one of her friends mentioned putting some Diatomaceous earth in the deer bedding areas...? When I used to raise chickens, I would put this product around the edges of the chicken coop and sprinkle some on their roosts to keep mites at bay. It did work for mites.

Hey Jeff what is the deal with the buck bedded and his nose and growth on it at the 6min mark in the video? Thoughts? interesting

I think I lost a set of twin fawns last week. I saw two were hit by a car a couple miles down the road by a corn field. That morning I had a doe walking funny on my camera. I haven't seen those fawns or that doe since on camera. As a nature lover it bummed me out.

Hey Jeff, what are your thoughts on putting mineral mix out for the July and august. I started doing it monthly back in March to help the does and bucks, but wasn’t sure if I should since we are closing in on the season and I don’t want to spook any of our bucks off the property. Thanks for all your help!

You're fine to be on your property and messing around doing whatever up until about 6 weeks before you start hunting. Ideally the bucks you're going to hunt aren't even on your land right now. I don't think Jeff does any type of mineral sites, at least he doesn't admit to it.

My problem is I have TOO MANY damn dear. I do nothing to feed them but they come through and destroy all my gardens and absolutely everything I plant. The amount of fencing I've had to put up to protect my stuff is insane.
