WSV: 'Lemon Sharks Need Love Too' with Eli Martinez

  • The "Shark Affection" debate continues, but this time we look at a less popular shark. In my experience lemon sharks seem almost indifferent, but Eli Martinez, with much more experience, has a different impression.
    Thank you Eli for the interview and your footage of "Taxi" the lemon shark.

Sharks don’t have great eyes, and all of their sensory organs are on the underside of their nose and in their mouth, so mouthing/biting is not just for finding food, it’s how they navigate. @Steven No, they are not, they are predators following their instincts. For the most part, they do not even "eat" men like people say they do. They just bite them, and then let go because they realise that humans do not have enough calories for them. People die from bleeding, and not by being devoured entirely by an Shark.

    • @Scarshadow666
      @Scarshadow666 6 месяцев назад +1

      Very true! And much to the detriment of the lemon sharks (much like Great Whites, they probably need the open ocean in order to breathe and migrate). Even with large sharks like Great Whites, only juveniles have been able to stay in large tanks (and even then it's not the best conditions as they eat a ton and wouldn't last very long without being released back to the ocean at some point). Places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium don't keep great white sharks anymore because of these issues.
      If people want to interact with lemon sharks, they're probably going to need to take diving lessons and some professional shark interaction education too.

      @@Scarshadow666 Although I agree with you, this sadly (or happily if you think about it) is not true. Lemon Sharks have actually been great at adapting to captive environments, where they can be easily studied. The only limitation aquariums have with these guys is that their so big compared to most sharks, so there are space problems. I've actually been to an aquarium with a Lemon Shark, they all looked bored though.

    I think humans have a hard time not relating to things outside of ourselves. We eventually learned to read mammals better, but a fish, or shark or water dwelling creature which has the least human face is very hard for us to read. We have to learn how they communicate, because they don't have eyebrows, they don't close their eyes as often and they have almost a permeant frown on their faces due to the shape of their mouths.
    It makes sense that they scared us for so long, they are very different from the typical mammal design, but I think with more study we can start to learn body language, subtle changes in their movement and even face to see better basic emotional communication.

    At a basic physical level, there are two major emotional axis. One is calm vs excited. The other axis is interest vs disinterest(You might also call this attraction vs revulsion.)
    All creatures aware of their environment are also capable of reacting to it in one or a combination of these 4 ways.
    then the lemon shark shows more interest and attraction to the diver, in response to gentle affection and further pursues the diver despite adversity of the tiger shark shows at least some element of intent. And the focus on the affection seems to be backed up by at least some evidence.

      It's true that dogfish are used for "flake" and other white fish fillers. Smooth hounds and spiny dogfish as well. Heck, with long lining and trawling who knows what they put in fish n chips now. But I believe lemon sharks and dogfish sharks are different.

      They aren't cute and cuddly, they're dangerous creatures that deserve respect. That said, if it was simple curiosity, why would the same sharks come back repetitively? Once or twice would be enough to solve the curiosity, so they must come back because they enjoy it.
