- Eppo Doeve is another in what's becoming a fairly long line of illustrators who have featured in the unsung heroes series, but I think are deserving of greater exposure in a solo spot. As with some others I didn't even know of his existence until I started making videos but he is now very much a firm favourite of mine. And I hope those who know better will pardon my attempts at Dutch pronunciation.
I remember sitting in front of the TV as a child, watching Eppo Doeve drawing. Never knew he was so versatile in his styles.
Another beautiful episode from Pete Beard.
Hello and thanks for your appreciation of the video. I tried to find video footage of his TV appearances but found none unfortunately
We're not worthy… what a fantastic artist Pete. I can typically see a through-line in people's work, but with Eppo Doeve, I'd never have guessed this is all the work of one man. Thanks as always for putting these together. What a treat!
Hello and thanks for the comment. And yes such levels of versatility are truly remarkable.
Doeve, whom I never heard of, proved to be a monstrous great talent. Thanks, Pete.
Hello - and I ttally agree. So good at so many things.
Thank you. Another incredible artist I had never even heard of. Your channel is such a gift to everyone who loves illustration!
Hello and thanks for the comment. And 'incredible' is a more than suitable adjective for this man's work.
You dig up so many wonders Pete. This one absolutely brilliant. Than you.
Hello and thanks for your comment. I'm glad you enjoyed his work.
Extraordinary presentation of an extraordinary artist.
Hi again and thanks on both counts.
A pleasure, as always, Mr B, love the music 😊
Hello and thanks a lot for your appreciation, as usual. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
Your visual essays are always a delight, and often bring an artist new to me into my awareness. Thank you so much for highlighting so many fine illustrators.
Hello and your appreciation is very welcome, so thanks a lot.
What a great artist & illustrator.First I've ever heard of him.
Hello and I'm glad to have made the introduction.
Never heard of doeve before, but now, thanks to you peter, i do. what a versatile artist with such a unique graphic language. i will definetely come back to this video to watch it several times more
Hello and many thanks for your comment. I certainly think repeated viewing is something his work deserves.
I had never heard of Eppo Doeve, but I am fascinated by his broad range of illustrative styles. As you said in the video, some of his work could have been mistakenly attributed to a different artist. Regardless of the styles, his work is captivating. Thank you for bringing Eppo Doeve to our attention.
Hello and thanks for your comment. It's a particular pleasure to know I'm bringing this illustrator's astonishing work to viewers who didn;t know about him and immediately recognise the quality of his work.
What an extraordinary talent! I'm so very glad that he didn't come to a very sticky end during the Nazi Occupation. I think that the stock market crash was what (partially) caused his prolific output. Staring potential poverty in the face will do that to a person.
Thank you for sharing this experience with us!
Hello again and many thaks for your ongoing appreciation of the channel. I'm delighted by the level of positive responses Doeve's work has attracted so far.
You have added another previously unknown to my list of favorites as well. Incredible versatility! And his poster "no people is stronger than its farmers" particularly apropos to certain power-grabs now going on in the Netherlands!
Hello again, and I'm very pleased that you - and it seems quite a few others - are particularly taken with his work. I know it's rhetorical but how can it be that he isn't a household name?
Every time you serve up one if these incredible artists i am amazed that there were so many unsung treasures still left! You really are extraordinary. Thank you so much.
Hello and thanks a lot. I'm probably as amazed as you are that there are still so many I haven't yet featured. Still, it keeps me out of mischief.
Definitely a very talented illustrator with the ability to produce such marvellous images. Thank, Pete, for sharing such gems with us.
Hello again and I'm very pleased you appreciate his work
I was thinking, a superexceptional gifted humans journey booked into his years and places on our world, how great must have felt the creative force and energy gained by the transformation of impressions. Thankyou for another fullofwonder view past the gates of 'your' garden of eden 🌻:)
Hello again and thanks a lot for your appreciation of this video and the wonderful work of Eppo Doeve.
It was stunning! Such an amazing Artist. I did enjoy the story you told a lot. So much knowledge! I am impressed. Thank you.
Hello again and my thanks for your appreciation of the video. Comments such as yours make my day.
Thank you for featuring this FORMIDABLE master! Another genius lost all too soon...
hello and thanks for the comment. Genius is a term that gets used far too casually these days but in the case of Eppo Doeve it's well deserved.
@@petebeard My feelings precisely: I deliberated -- just briefly -- before using it🙂
Brilliant! Thanks again for another art lesson.
Hello and thanks a lot for your comment.
A gem of a post, thanks Pete, a real tonic for us subscribers...cheers...E...😊😊😊😊
Hi again and thanks as ever for the comment. I'm glad you enjoyed it.
If everyone made videos like you Pete, youtube would be a very good website. Thanks
Hello and thanks for your comment. Greatly appreciated. I flatter myself that at least I raise the tone a little...
What astonishing versatility! You could have grouped this into four or five parts, made up some phony names, and presented it as an Unsung episode with nobody the wiser. This is all the work of the same person? I am blown away!
Hello and yes it's hard to imagine how so much talent and diversity of approach could belong to just one human. I can't help seething with envy...
Thanks, Pete. This man seems like the very epitome of stylistic versatility.
Hi again and of course I totally agree. Hard not to resent him for it...
wow!!! i bet it wasn't easy to represent such a diverse body of work in a 12 minute video, but I loved seeing all the different types of illustration, painting, set design and more that you've featured. Loved the sharp contrast between the flower paintings and the crayon drawings.
Hello and thanks for the comment. Actually the only hard bit was having to decide what to leave out. Prolific, versatile and gifted - what a combination.
A very sincere thank you for your interesting video. This was fascinating and educational as well 💐
Hello and many thanks for your kind comment.
Wow he made a ton of images. Very talented for not going to school for it. I love his ability to evoke astuteness, swollen frollic, shocked witness, and bravery to fight against evil humans in the medium. Its so cool his art become money. I think we should have handshake images on our money to evoke the labor-honesty exchange.
Hello and thanks for the comment. And yes he was a remarkably talented man who should be better known around the world.
Self~ taught WOW! He had a natural talent & motivation to do something w/it *THX Pete*
Hello again and thanks for the comment - and stars. Imagine knowing you have such talent and planning a career as a tea planter. Humans are very strange.
@@petebeard Yes
Wow…I love his work…
Hello and 'Im delighted to hear it. He deserves much greater recognition.
Pete, despite (or because) being unable to draw even recognisable stick figures, I watch your channel just to revel in the skill and brilliance of the artists you feature, but never comment... until now. What an incredible artist with such amazing variations in style and vision. I had never heard of Eppo Doeve, but I thank you so very much for featuring him here.
Hello and many thanks for your comment, and I genuinely welcome all such support whether it comes from professionals or others who just appreciate the images. I'm very pleased that you, like a lot of other viewers, admire Doeve's remarkable work.
Thanks Pete! As always, a brilliant portrayal of the artist's work. Thanks again!
Hello and my thanks for your continued appreciaton.
Thank you Pete! Another great artist I've never heard of.
Hello again and I'm delighted to hear you appreciate his work. He deserves to be much better known.
Hello Pete, you've found another great Dutch artist! My wife and I were lucky to know his work ( due to both being Dutch and being born early enough to be familiar with him). We thank you for your wonderful words of praise and for showing so many people outside of The Netherlands what a great and stylistically diverse artist Eppo Doeve was.
Still in anticipation of your opinion on Albert Hahn (not their real names - you were very clever to find out that both Senior and Junior were artists)...
Hello again and thanks a lot for your comment. He really should be internationally famous. Hahn & Hahn are waiting patiently in line and should appear before too long. And Im pleased to say i founs a couple more great Dutch illustrators to feature too.
Marvelous! 😊😊😊
Such a diverse line of expression! Odd how popular and enriching posters were and are not now.
Mr. Beard, I look forward every week or so waiting for another episode of your amazing work. And sharing it, as you do, gratis! You so wonderfully enrich us all...
Tnx!
Hello again and thanks as ever for your appreciation. Best not to get me started about how the magnificent posters of the past have been thrown on the scrapheap and replaced in the main by tedious ugly photographs. There goes the blood pressure again...
Thanks, Pete, another new one on me. A perfect introduction. I can't believe he was going to be a tea trader, but then took up art as a second choice, and with such ease! I struggle over every drawing, it just ain't fair.
Hello again and there's a line behind me when it comes to feeling shortchanged with my talent allocation. When I started out I attempted similar levels of versatility but with markedly less success. And then I got an agent who told me they struggled to find work for me because I didn't have one particular style. So I stopped and really now wish I hadn't listened - even if they were probably right.
@@petebeard And we're told that versatility is a good thing.
Great to see a video about Eppo. One of his "party tricks" was to draw with both hands at the same time. I think he was mostly known for his political cartoons in the magazine Elsevier which were hilarious.
Considering his rate of output, are we sure he didn't use his feet as well?
Hello and thanks for the comment. I didn't know that about his ambidextrous abilities. And I would have liked to include more of his Elsevier work but surprisingly it's quite hard to come by at decent resolution.
@@petebeard Another Dutch illustrator Peter van Straaten made a drawing of Eppo making a nude with both hands on a bar table at a society of artists he frequented. It was something Eppo did on several occassions to entertain his colleagues. Googling for "Peter van Straaten" and "Eppo Doeve" should find this drawing.
A lot of Eppo's political cartoons were collected in the book "De Wereld van Eppo Doeve" with text of Alexander Pola describing the political history behind the cartoons. Mine is from 1984 but it's still available (in the Netherlands of course).
Eppo Doeve is a forgotten master in his own country.
Thanks again Pete for all your hard work.
Hello and thanks. But it really doesn't feel like work at all.
Great video Pete! What an amazing talent Eppo had! The wide range of styles, paintings and monocromes is really fantastic! Not many artists can follow his vast range of styles🤩👍✍✍
Hello and thanks a lot for your comment. I'm very pleased by the reaction to Doeve's work from many viewers.
@@petebeard You're welcome! I always enjoy Your hard work in providing known and unknown artists to us! You are truly appreciated! And Eppo's work surprised me in the most positive way! Really inspiring🤩😁
Wow! The guy was just everywhere doing everything. What an amazing talent. My husband was watching with me and said the he want to know who ran his life. Surely he didn't have time to do anything else but pump out work. There must have been some dedicated people keeping him in hot food and clean shorts. As always, a pleasure Sir. Thanks for another wonderful art adventure.
Hello again and thanks a lot for your comment. Another viewer claims (and who am I to doubt them?) that Doeve could draw with both hands simultaneously. And at the risk of appearing sexist he had a wife who perhaps kept him supplied with the necessities of life. Or maybe he just wasn't human...
@@petebeard Behind every good man...as they said in those days. ;)
Wonderful episode. Thank you very much for this focus on his work. The stillness in much of his work is arresting and beautiful. He was a truly great creative. It was lovely to see that he also got to bring his live personality to Dutch living rooms through TV as well as enhancing the public and commercial spaces with his taste, style and verve. He is probably the favorite of all the artists I have learned about during my graphic art history learning on your irreplaceable channel. So happy to see many other appreciative fans and learners here together in the comments section. And as a bonus I saw scraperboard used as a serious medium. I had only used it in my 1970s childhood in Europe after receiving it as a Christmas gift for arts/crafts projects but was told then it was "just for kids." Happy to see otherwise!
Hello again and thanks very much for your appreciation of this video and Doeve's wonderful work. I have been very pleased with the positive response from many viewers about this particulalr video, and if I have made a few converts in the process that's even better.
Speechless...
Hello and I'm very glad he has made such an impression. No idea why he isn't a household name.
You have given me hours of pleasure, Pete. What a fabulous artist! Another awesome video.
❤ SayessDesign
Hi again and your ongoing appreciation of the channel and its content is a great source of pleasure to me. Thanks.
Stunning, both in impact and range of styles. Though self-taught, he obviously had a good teacher.
Hello again and naturally enough I couldn't agree more.
A gift to us. Thank you
Hello and thanks for your appreciation.
😮
I am blown away by the work that man has left us. How quickly we forget.
Hello and I second that observation. Thanks for the comment.
Thank you, great video!
Thanks - you're welcome.
Pete, like many of your followers, I too was unaware of Eppo Doeve (one would remember a name like that!) and am taken aback by the scope of his talent. An excellent video.
Hello and thanks as usual for your comment. I've been very pleased by the positive respones to Doeves astonishing body of work. You have to wonder why he isn't better known.
• Eppo Doeve
What an incredible illustrator! His styles ran the gamut, as different from his birthplace in Indonesia as the rest of his life in the Netherlands.
His animal and floral renderings are glorious as are his murals. Then there are his designs for Dutch banknotes and advertising posters. He seemedly did it all!
Truly amazing... and thanks again for another stunning episode.
Your appreciation is always welcome but particularly so in this case. How a man as talented and stylistically diverse as Doeve could be so overlooked I can't imagine. Thanks a lot for watching and commenting.
Very productive & diversified 😊... Wonderful ❤️..... just my opinion
Hello again and your opinion is shared by many it seems - including me of course.
Wow---It never ceases to amaze me, Pete, how you stumble onto these gems. Always a treat and an education. And with Doeve in particular, I'm amazed at his stylist variety as you've mentioned. Hard to pick a "favorite' approach, but I'll confess I was particularly stuck by the powerful book cover designs (and I agree, they hold up well ; I'd put them up against any of the cookie cutter covers created today). Thanks again, Pete, for another delightful romp through some amazing art. Cheers and say safe!
Great works ! ( Doeve and Pete! )
Hello again and I'm particularly pleased you enjoyed this one. To be so good at so many styles and techniques without any formal training leaves me in total awe of this man. You have to wonder why he isn't a household name.
@@petebeard Yes Pete, I'm moving....all the week in a rush!! But I want to say you - in a short comment - that I saw this video, and it's exactly as you say...a man who accomplish some many styles, everyone different of another, we are no talking of variations of one same line or drawing!!!
@@gabrielerosa665 Hi Gabriel - moving? But still in Spain I assume. I hope it goes well for you.
@@petebeard yes, in Barcelona ( but somebody says that Catalonia isn't Spain !!! )....I'm moving to a better place!
Lovely!
Thanks for your appreciation.
What a bewildering multitude of styles, each exquisite in its own right. Not one of the images was familiar to me - my loss! Thank you for putting the spotlight on him.
Thanks for your comment and I'm very pleased you are impressed with his work. Definitely one of the most fascinating illutrators I've covered.
What a wonderful artist - what more can I say!
Thankd for the comment, and I'm glad you enjoyed his work.
You really have a great talent to guide us amongst all these giants of art and illustration.
Thank you so much !
Hello and it's very nice of you to say so. Thanks for your continuing appreciation.
Thank you for including him in your fantastic series!
Hello and thanks a lot for your comments. I don't know why but iI assumed he was well known in Holland, and just thought it was everywhere else that he was an obscure figure. He deserves to be world famous.
Wow!
That's the kind of reaction his work should get.
Wow! Another illustrator I'd not seen before!! To be self taught and that accomplished is remarkable!! And on television! The original Jon Nagy!!!
"Tea planting's loss has undoubtedly been illustration's gain!" Well said!!
Hello and I'm pleased to have introduced you to Doeve's astonishing body of work. Talent such as his is a rare commodity.
This channel is a blessing. Thank you so much!
Hello and my thanks to you for your positive comment about the channel and its content.
Thank you as always for bringing another great talent to our awareness!
Hello again and thanks a lot for your continued appreciation of the channel content.
Amazing illustrations from a great artist. Now, do you need to go to art school? Well, in those days, it was affordable, but even back then almost a 100 years ago you didn't. Today, most art schools outside of classical ateliers do not teach fundamental skills, but focus on rationalizing poor, naive, and decadent art as something big and trendy.
Hello, and thanks for your comment and observation. Having spent 15 years teaching the subject at university I have to agree with your low opinion of contemporary art education. I was accused more than once of being 'too commercial and practical'.
Thanks Pete, for this lovely video about Eppo Doeve. I only knew of his political cartoons for Elsevier Magazine. Great to see his other work as well.
Hello again and thanks for the appreciation. I'm in awe of the man's versatility.
definitely going to attempt to hunt down some of those crime comics!
Hello and good luck with your hunt. But be warned - only the illustrations for Radiobode magazine were Doeve's. There's also strip work by others which is fairly generic by comparison.
Thanx for sharing this remarkable story
Hello and thanks for your comment.
Pete, thank you again for the wonderful video. Your prose and analysis is fantastic.
Hello and I'm very pleased that you enjoyed the video - and my own contribution to it. Your response is very welcome.
this y im subcribed thank u
Hello and thanks for the comment and subscription. Very welcome.
Eppo Doeve's work is amazing! Thank you for another informative video.
Hello and many thabks for your comment. I;m pleased you are impressed by Doeve's remarkable work.
Astonishing versatility. I wondered if you were considering doing an episode on Russ Nicholson who died very recently. While not as elegant or published in such prestigious forms as many of your subjects, he certainly had a huge impact on many children and teens.
Hello and Im glad you enjoyed Doeve's work. And thanks for the suggestion. I hadn't considered him for the simple reason that I hadn't actually heard of him so thanks for that. I'll investigate but I should issue the caveat that a quick look suggests I might not be able to gather enough information to do a feature. I'll persevere.
@@petebeard He’s probably best remembered for his illustrations of the Fighting Fantasy series of choose-your-own adventure books by Steve Jackson and Ian Livingstone.
@@thecaveofthedead Thanks - I'll take a look.
very nice video
Hello and thanks a lot.
What a stunning selection of work! Like many, I too, had not heard of Eppo Doeve, which confounds me, given his output and quality. And yet another self-taught artist! I wonder if it is this fact that accounts for his stylistic versatility? He seems to have been a sponge, soaking up techniques and giving them his own spin; I can detect possible influences from a variety of sources, but there's no hint of direct copying; Doeve has managed to put his own stamp on whatever technique he fancied.
A wonderful instalment, Pete. Thanks very much for making and sharing this video of such a remarkable talent!
Hello again and many thanks for your comment and appreciation of this video. Until I started making these videos I hadn't heard of him either and to say his work was a revelation would be putting it mildly. Such versatility and productivity - quite astonishing.
What a wonderful story, and it has to do with the price of tea in China!
Hello again and thanks for the comment. It beggars belief that he planned a career as a tea planter.
Love your channel. Thank you
Hello again and that makes me very happy. I hope you keep watching.
Wonderful!
Hi again and I'm glad you enjoyed his work.
6:46 great perspective
Can you imagine how much one of his posters would sell for today?
Hello, and actually you dont have to imagine. I can't find any original poster artwork for sale (although there must be some) but if you go to the auction site invaluable you can see just how depressingly little his original paintings fetch. Even oil paintings can be bought for £1500.
What a great find, and so versatile, one of those annoying people who are good at whatever they do.
Hello and yes as someone who attempted similar versatility but with conspicuously less success it's hard not to resent his incredible talent
Forgive me if I haven’t looked deeply enough. I love your inspiring videos and keeping these artist alive in our imaginations and thoughts is beyond any thanks I can give. I was wondering if you did a video history about Joseph Clement?
Hello and thanks for the aporeciation and question. I'm assuming you mean Joseph Clement Coll, and I haven't featured him yet. (Its a long queue). Unfortunately I don't have enough material to feature him as a solo video, but he will appear in the unsung heroes series before long.
Pete-please consider doing a video on Boris Artzybasheff.
Hello and your wish is my command. It's already on the channel content.
Great post.
Hello and thanks a lot.
Hi Pete another beautiful compilation of Eppo Doeves work, gratefully appriciated, thank you from Holland !!! My question are you yourself an Illistrator ?
Hello and many thanks for your appreciation. I used to be an illustrator for more than 4 decades but I retired in 2016. There is a poor resolution video of some of my work on the channel and if you search 'pete beard portfolio' you'll see the kind of images I used to make.
Career as a tea planter....must be nice
Wow!!!
Yes - he merits that kind of response. Thanks
i recently came across a facsimile sketchbook with critical notes at my local library by canadian writer/printer emily carr, "sister and i in alaska". is there information out there on her illustration work?
Hello and thanks for the name - I was unaware of her work. Just search on google and there are many examples of her painting and a lengthy entry in wikipedia which gives more worthy links to her as a subject. Sadly she's not one for my channel as she was resolutely an artist rather than illustrator.
'Grew up on a farm'. Is there a clearer indication of success? The gift is common sense learned when a youthful desire to construct meets wood and metal, bricks and water and fur and feather conspire against the soft skin and tissue of man.
Inspiring stuff, poor economy forces youth to pursue careers in art.
Hello and thanks for your comment. There seem to be quite a few illustrators who came to it from more conventional professions and ambitions.
