I appreciate how you're not showing off your skills, instead taking the time to teach the mechanics in a way that's easy to learn. Thanks.
This is actually a real virtue not many people exhibit!

funny thing - I use that rhythm all the time whenever I strum open chords, it just feels natural to me and so satisfying.
same here when he went through with it i was just "hey, that's my strumming"
Same here in Argentina. Apparently is the easiest strum pattern of all time..'til u gotta brain it down at a slow tempo xD
Same lol
Probably the only that cames natural to me but it doesn't seem to solve my strumming problem (that goes worse and worse if I want to add singing part)
@@user-fy9qn8cb7w i found that when i had strumming problems (im left hamded playing on rh guitars) stepping away and doing some alternative picking/ economy picking lead then coming back to strumming really made it easier; it almost made my wrist “unlock” so to speak but also just turning on the metronome and strumming to to chord changes in all sorts of different strum patterns helped immensely
Biggest thing for me with strumming was definitely just getting my wrist unlocked and fixing picking angle in my playing; either way sorry for the rant, hope this helps, cheers
Dude i cant thank you enough, its been only a 5 days since ive got a guitar, and immidietly followed ur on site lessons, now ive got some calluses on my fingertips and strings dont hurt anymore,
Also ive learned 4 chords and the spider exercise so its really going sweet, i can see myself playing my fav guitar tunes in 6 months or so i can feel it!
Calluses after 5 days??? Nope, you don't. Check in 5 weeks again and lets talk about real calluses ;)
Good luck man!! Of course you can do it in 6 months, but I believe you can do it in less time. II started about 7 months ago and can play a lot of the Guns N’ Roses solos and Intros, and many more it’s just about how much time you put into it. And good luck again !!!
Can u do all that in five days? I've been at this for 2 years lol
@@pharaoh9483so you can shred the Sweet Child o Mine solo after 7 months of playing?
Good stuff bro ,I’ve been playing for a year and I’m a noob as player ,but I really love the guitar and the small progress I make each practice.
Good luck on your journey mate .

This is THE default strumming rhythm. Play it as fast as you can with distortion and power chords, a d-beat on the drums, and you have instant hardcore punk! Always satisfying
my most common strumming pattern is this exact pattern but with a final upstroke instead of a no hit
I've been calling it "controlled misses" from the straight-eight pattern (down up down up down up down up). So it ends up becoming "down -- down up -- up down --" I like the way you describe it too!
Really helpful, great sounding strum. I am starting to get it. For people like me who need to count the beats: D:1 AND D:2 U:AND (D No contact):3 AND:U D:4 AND . The up stroke with contact is always on the AND that is to say the second half of the beat, and the D with no contact on beat 3 helps you to keep the rhythm.
I wish more people could give a guitar lesson like this..for beginners..without having to perform every riff they know..nice job, great video tomcat, love from England.
Ditto
It took 47.5 years, but I finally see a Telecaster that looks really nice.

I've played for 50 years and never once "learned" a strumming pattern. I just strummed.
I've been struggling with learning how to strum for some time now. I watched this video today during work and tried it after, when I sat down to practice. It was awkward at first, but after 30 minutes of doing this over and over, I'm actually strumming. I still miss the strings occasionally, but I'm sure that will go away with time and practice. Thank you!
I know this comment is 2 years old.... but I hope your still playing.
Yeah,
For me, I don't want the "attack" to be to heavy with regard to hitting the strings.
One UP, Three DOWN, Release the clutch slowly as you turn the throttle ...
I remember the nes
In mother russia we call this a basic strum pattern "6" and play all songs with it.
It's the most common strumming pattern
How can you play all songs with it.
Vivian Martin not all, but a lot songs can be played with this pattern

@@vivM.5497 I only know (and admire) the Russian emphasis on pragmatism and efficiency. I categorize this as a symptom of that.
That strumming pattern is tattooed to whats left of my brain..oh well, I'm 60 an still learning 👍
Can't thank you enough! This helps greatly. It truly does unlock a lot of patterns.
I thought "At a medium pace" was Adam Sandler.
It is, I blew it!
@@TheArtofGuitar Well, make sure you blow it at a medium pace.
Ha. Glad I read down a little bit. Was gonna say the same thing. Great vid man. Been watching a few here and there. Your videos are comfortable watch and listen too. Getting back into the guitar after about 15 years. RUclips is awesome for this. Feel like I learn so much more than I ever did back in high school reading Metallica guitar tab books in my garage. Those were great though.
So far the best tutor i came across, straight to the point slow in talk, clear in explanation and very easy to understand and the demo is in slow, medium and fast phase, most importantly not winding with rubbish talks. Keep it up buddy.
Funnily enough, my guitar teacher back in high school drilled this strum pattern into us haha It worked though!
No. The proper one is up stroke, up stroke, down stroke, down stroke, pick slide left, pick slide right, pick slide left, pick slide right, b chord, a chord. You now have infinite chords and chord patterns.
Cool bjj lesson would like to know how to pull half guard on a mounted position next
dont ever disrespect muay thai again.
I am 78 & have been trying to get guitar connected for all this this time. I’ve come to know that procrastination ADHD, & advanced age are a terrible combination. The only song I recognized in this lesson was the last one but never fear I still enjoyed the lesson. ADHD MOMENT LOL ... When you’re using the guitar with the dark headstock, many times there is a reflection on it that looks like a gigantic spider ! Might want to give the headstock a once over with bug spray or hang your cables differently. Caused my old ticker to skip a beat or two ! LOL. Keep up the good work !
Oh look, a Squirrel
This is my Achilles Heel because I naturally attempt to “muscle” everything I do and like you said, it is hard to miss the strings with a stiff arm. You would think relaxing would be easy but this is going to require some “stiff” practice to be unstiff. I’ll give this technique a try since it seems to force you to relax to do it and maybe finally get over this hurdle. It’s ironic to need to focus on relaxing.
Learn "Wildwood Flower" flat pick style and call me in 2 weeks.
Talk about twisting you wrist while you strum.
So, this is kind of interesting. I took lessons for only a few months when I first started playing 25 years ago. Since then, I’ve just progressed by playing and figuring the vast majority of things out naturally as I went along. The interesting part is how simply playing over time will eventually bring you to the same methods! I notice this all the time when I’m watching RUclips guitar videos these days. I was never taught 80% of the techniques I use. Yet, I do use them. Pretty cool!
Very cool
I want to see a video about 6:21 to 6:31 , that's the sort of stuff that loosens bras, those RHCP patterns
it's a circle of fifths chord progression
@@duckieduckie5692 No it's not. It's just the cliche 4 chords of pop: i bVI bIII bVII (vi IV I V in the relative major). The middle two chords resolve UP a fifth. In a circle five progression chords resolve DOWN a fifth. What people would call a circle of fifths progression is iii VI ii V I or ii V I IV viio III vi or any other progression where chords resolve down a fifth (up a fourth). The chords in the riff we're talking about are "the four chords", look it up.
This is a man whos got his eyes on the prize
Outstanding reference to "at a medium pace", but that was Adam Sandler and not tenacious D for anybody who wants to look it up.
I'm sure the strumming pattern is different, and I'm not a guitarist, but I kept hearing Pigs on the Wing.
First song i ever learned was time of your life by geeen day. Very glad i picked this song. Helps your strumming. Helps pick individual strings and string skip while changing chords. Can seem daunting at the start but just keep practicing. So many times i think nah i cant do this, to then come back the next day and feel it click. Feels amazing. Dont let yourself down!
Salient insight/advice
Huh, I'll be honest, the weirdest thing is that this was my natural default pattern when I started teaching myself for the looongest time lmfao
Me too
Same here lmfao, one of the first ones I taught myself
Same, seems like it just automatically entered my head and boom
same here, i was trying to do it slowly and i couldnt it felt weird, but then did it faster and noticed that its something i do alot
Like 6 months ago I used this pattern for a song and immediately every other strum patters just kinda felt natural
Gavin Smith literally me too
why do you guys never play the technique at the start of the video to show people what they are about to learn
Jump to 3:08 if you’re a weirdo like me who likes to have some general idea of what someone’s actually talking about before you listen to them go over the finer points for three minutes.
That 3 pickup tele is sick! It's always a good day when I see your upload!
That's a Nashville Tele Deluxe. It has a strat pickup in the middle. I have one and love it.
IMO I feel sick seeing a third pickup on a Tele, buy a Strat if you want that sound. I feel the same whenever I see a Strat with a humbuckers, excuse me I get some Pepto...
Joe D same!!
I have one too. I am thinking of upgrading to Lace Sensors. What are your take?
Please do a lesson about the final rhythm lick. I'd like to get some more prowess on rhythm playing, with focus on little licks between chords.
Nice technique, thanks for the lesson. Nice Tele, looks like mine except I have the white pick guard. So there.
This was the first strumming pattern I ever learned lol
The muted down stroke does kinda sound like an NES sound effect... 3:06
Thank you. That was very satisfying. An exercise that made me feel like I was making music. Great feeling for a real beginner.
It’s, up, up, down, down left, right , left, right, B, A, select, start. It’s for 99 lives in Contra.

I nailed this! I can't wait to get my guitar, so I can make some noise when I do it. LOL!
I like your Zeppelin shirt! Good lesson, I'm going to practice this. Yes, it does sound like Bob Seeger.
maybe lesson on how to combine that pattern with when to mute and not mute while strumming to get that funky rhythm?
I promise I'm not being paid to say this but holy shit. This literally changed the way I strum for the better in a matter of like 4 minutes. I legit feel like I unlocked a cheat code LOL. Thanks so much man!
Wow man! God bless you man!! I have been struggling with strumming for close to a year now, I have even almost given up but just opened this video during a break from working at home and this is the best strumming technique lesson I have seen. It felt like magic man, I got it within 2 minutes. I can't thank you enough. Thank youuuu!!!!

That is very similar to my go-to strumming pattern, though I also play an extra upstroke at the end.
Hi, Nice video. Can anyone recommend some songs with this pattern other than the ones mentioned in the video -- the more the merrier ! Thank you!
Dude I knew this guy was legit, but after seeing his shirt in this video I now know for sure he is kin
3 single coil in a tele wow thats weird !
What did it for me was throwing an extra up at the end of the pattern D DU UDU when I was learning Last Kiss
For begginers, putting the last up strum in. Changes the 4th beat (quarter note) into an 8th note. Making you have less time for the chord change. Practicing lifting your chord hand right before the up strum helps make the chord change faster.
Thank you sooo much, this has been a game changer for me!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽
Bleed is the picking pattern that unlocks all patterns

Dude thanks, the technique of dropping your hand down after a strum is so useful, can't believe I never learned this !!
Great video ! Could you do a lesson on the more advanced bit you played at the end, please? Thanks very much!
super lesson sooo helpful and I am the world's worst guitar beginner ever since I upgraded from my trusty air guitar to this LTD EC-201 it's like 1,000x heavier

Good lesson. I heard the beatles “tell me what you see” and “Me and Bobby Mcgee”.
Thanks for this video! I can't wait to try this out; I've been learning guitar by myself for a few months and strumming is the biggest weak point I wanted to improve on.
Theres lots of good videos out there. I'm teaching myself to for years. Hows the practicing going?
1. Down, 2. Down, up, 3. Up, down -- 3 days ago I just bought an electric guitar online. I don't know how to play -- TOTAL beginner here. This will be one of the first strums I try. Meanwhile, will practice on air guitar. Thanks for the great instructions. Now please teach what you did at the very end - that sounds impressive.
Your better focusing on your down strokes when starting off. I always struggled with my up strokes as a beginner. Do up strokes when you are comfortable doing down strokes.
Any progress?
I will practicibg it, hopefully it will help me have brekthrout to my rhytim and strumming after so many years dont feel right....back then i have doing it wrong...thank bro
i teach that too to my student (since almost 15 years) on the first half of their first year. Step two is the first bar of Wonderwall or Zombie.
Whats this cheat code L1,L2,R1,R2,left,down,right,up,L1,L2,R1,R2,left,down,right,up
Aww am I too late to see the Metroid playthrough? I've been playing guitar for 4 years now and Ive off and on seen your videos and it wasnt until now that I realized I wasnt subbed.😢
It tickles me so much to see my favorite video game franchise mentioned.
2:56 I believe that's not a Tenacious D reference but an Adam Sandler reference!
Awesome lesson!! Big thanks... btw, is this the strumming pattern used in Pink Houses? u mentioned that u referred to it as the john mellencamp strum.
That was really helpful thanks I wish had some money to give you its definitely worth it. My Dad bought me lessons for years lol!!
How you said, let your brain practice it. So be it, I’m gonna go play some Nintendo.
I don't know how, but it works, I was desperate because of strumming since more than two years , only two days after this , I understand it and feel it , thank you so much !!
OMG, OMG, I LIKED AND SUBSCRIBED YOU AS SOON AS I HEARD THIS 6:20❤❤❤👍
For people who follow JustinGuitar, this is the pattern he calls 'old faithful'.
That's a 1-2-2 strum. 1 stroke, skip, 2 stokes, skip, 2 strokes, repeat. Wrist is going steadily up and down, just lift pick to skip. 1-2-3 is a calypso strum. 3-3 is triplet strum. All kinds of patterns can result and is what makes a tune catchy.
Just started playing I want to strum at camp fire I belive this will help me lots im very new tho as in day one just picked up a fender and a amp
That thing you played at 6:20 was real sweet. Is that from a song or did you just make that up?

Simone Ferrarese sounds more like Under The Bridge
It's a well known progression but I just added some funky strum to it. :) It's also like Say it Ain't So sped up kinda. :)
when i first started learning the guitar, strumming became kinda natural too meh, became estranged after doing some different stuff now its the weirdest thing in the world to me.
Thanks. I've been looking for advanced RH technique and exercises.
i thought this was clickbait but i literly got this in like 4 mins... so cool i dont know how i didnt find this yet!!
I think one way to make it even m ore simple is just the code 2, 2, 1.....meaning 2 down, 2up, 1 down, or 2 down C, 2up C, 1down C......c stands for contact......or dc, dc, uc, uc, dc......
Кукушка by KINO uses that strumming pattern I believe the chords are
Am (obviously because it's Russian) twice
e 0
B1
G2
D2
A0
E X
G once
e3
B0
G0
D0
A2
E3
Dm (I think🤔) once
e1
B3
G2
D0
A X
E X
Then back to Am
Then it changes up after while and they throw in an f chord somewhere
I wish people who make tutorials would just say 1 2 + +4, because THAT'S what unlocked it for me. Down down up up down DOESN'T give you the _timing_!!!
Your beautiful Tele is distracting me from what your saying lol.
At a Medium Pace was Adam Sandler off of his album They're All Going To Laugh At You. Very very NSFW.

If not any tips that I should do to help combat my small hands/fingers?? Thanks again I’m gonna go practice this right now. 👍
Aaaah this is messing with my brain!!!
the muted strings sound like a underwater duck or a wet fart
Love that Nashville! Had one since around December ish and I love it a lot! Only thing I would do is swap out that cap on a pick up selector because after playing live a lot mine kept falling off.. switched to a knurled tip that screws in, works perfectly hasn’t fallen off!
I am a newbie. Guitar is something I always wanted to learn never thought I would. So thankful for ppl like u. Wow I got a little emotional writing that sentence lol . Finger picking is where my heart is. Do u have videos for strumming with fingers? I’ll look but often it’s like finding a needle in a hay stack.
