I’ve been rejected for a year after graduating last year in computer science. I’m working in retail while I’m searching for my real job. I feel like I’m not good enough to be hired as a programmer. Living with a lower class family, I just want to be hired as a programmer and change my life financially and help my family out, too. I hope it gets better soon...

You have a CS degree, you won't be out of work for long. The best thing you can do in my own opinion is make yourself marketable. Take on personal projects (like making an app you always dreamed of even if it's a trivial one like making a soundboard) to show case your abilities. I got hired because on lead dev i interviewed with loved how I had done some work with the Unity Game engine and made a game!
I have a CS degree too, and it took me a while. But you WILL get that job.

It took me so long to even get a interview, afterwards I got rejected a few times. All told me that I did very well but got someone with more experience. It seems the majority of these entry level job was my no experience. Now that I am getting experience I have more perspective on what to ask in interviews.

  • @jretzlaff

I really appreciate that you have the courage to talk about feelings as a software engineer. If we can't manage the feelings that come up as part of our work, I don't think we can do our best work. And, more importantly, sustainability in our career is going to be a lot harder. I don't think any of us can manage all the feelings well, but if we talk about it with each other and learn from each other, we'll get closer.
I've interviewed a lot of potential coworkers over the years. For a long time I found the other side of this very difficult. Who am I to judge this person after only 45 minutes together? At some point it occurred to me that there is alignment in the interview if we frame our thinking a certain way. What we (interviewer and candidate) want to do is to figure out together if the candidate will be happy and productive in the specific role being considered. If we both estimate that to be true, we both want it to happen. If not, we should be glad that we figured that out before it became much more painful to go our own ways. Then it's not about acceptance or rejection, it's about deciding if we're a good fit for each other. That doesn't mean it doesn't feel like rejection when there is disagreement about the fit!
I think finding the right framing in other areas can also help get past the feelings of rejection and onto the learning you talk about. For example, we can figure out as a team (engineers, PM, EM, etc.) whether we should do the project or not. We all have bits of the context that fit together to make a good decision. If it feels like rejection to me, that might be the indicator I need to seek out the context I'm missing (or is there context I have that others weren't aware of?). Ideally we can build enough trust with each other to feel that we're making good decisions as a team. Sometimes the "rejection" just means the team/product/customer isn't ready for the idea yet, but let's keep looking for the right time to consider it again.

When I was laid off from my internship earlier than I was supposed to be I was not able to ask any of those questions since it was a shock for me. I was not expecting that at all. Now I regret it since I don't know exactly know the reason why I was not "good enough" for them. I keep creating reasons on my own trying to figure it out what could be the reason but in the end it just hurts more.. Now I do feel better and I'm leaving this on the past and trying to see the good things that happened beacuse I had more time and stuff. But yeah. Anyway... Awesome video Mayuko :)

Hey Mayuko, thanks for the info and great content here! Although it would have been nice to have a bit more on the feeling side of things. As technical people, I think most of us generally gravitate towards finding out what they did wrong or how to solve this problem better next time. So I think in most cases, people will know what it is that they "have to do" to not get rejected next time. But what would have been an interesting topic is the "why" part. Why should we get up 8 times again to continue? How do we get the motivation to keep trying? We know the solution but when you are rejected and feel demotivated, how do you get the mental strength to actually attempt those solutions? It certainly helps to understand that we learn everything each time we fail, but the bad feeling is still there. I'm interested in hearing your opinion on that.

I have a dev job now for a management consultant firm so in the end, i guess it all worked out. But I sometimes wonder what i learned from each failure, if anything at all...it concerns me that I struggle with this.

The lesson is life is a numbers game. In school you are taught that if you get 90% of the answers right thats an "A", and that's success. Well in the real goddamn world an "A" is like getting 10% of the answers right.

I see rejection as part of the hustle. I tried to break into other types of jobs before I even looked into programming (spoiler, failed to land many a "dream job" in unrelated fields). While working in the tech support, I got interested in programming. So, just kept practicing and grinding. I got really inspired when a co worker at the time showed me some cell phone game he made , it looked cool and it was the perfect kind of thing to show in a programming interview, very "look what I am capable of doing". I really hate the process of applying for jobs, hoping they call me back, and clenching my teeth in job interviews. I think I am just going to keep working unrelated jobs while I try to make apps in my free time. My ultimate goal is to have a programming side hustle. I will either becoming good enough at programming, I can just go into interviews / be recruited, or if I find one day my regular 9-5 does not work out, well, I have the programming skills to fall back on.
The way I see it, its not so much "rejection" you need to keep working hard and sharpening your skills, so that, you are valuable enough to always be in demand.

Actually, the process is often very chaotic. I had some interviews recently (before xmas) and didn't think about getting an offer from a huge outsourcer. But others? Ok. One day, I interviewed for dev position to make addons in odoo. I got an invitation after a phone call, which was called off after the weekend before another interview in Karlsruhe. Companies consist out of people who are making decisions. And a decision to hire someone is a business decision. Speaking now from the perspective of a former applicant, all rejections hurt, when you are in a tough place. But some decisions have nothing to do with you. Sometimes you might think: Better off without this company. One businessman rejected me and hurt me a lot. He told me to go to the labour department "for help". Seriously: Do you really want to work with such a person????? I used to work with a boss, who became toxic by day by day, because I wasn't behaving like a dev in his eyes. Some people really wake up with the idea how they literally screw others over.
So don't take rejections personally. They are opening doors for better opportunities. I used to take rejections very to my heart to depression and that in the video described feeling of not being "good enough".

Very cool sharing, yeh recently I was rejected at a job interview, which gave me great motivation and direction/areas to study on, and I am at it, from a rejection feeling now I am onto a more 'competent' feeling as missing pieces coming together thru study, yeh though I miss that dream job, but I have added more to myself since the rejection. Such is life, failure is truly a step towards success, but here success is not something glamourous, rather something substantial within yourself as you become more from within. Thanks.

Rejection is a part of life. Maybe it was a good thing. People who made a massive impact got rejected loads of times. Suck it up and work harder. No name company, bro you need some Gary Vee. Google him. You only fail when you give up.

Getting an interview at aFAANG is already a sucess. No name? W/o no name companies, I wouldn't be at a better company.

I think everyone should focus on what you want for your career, not what they want for a profit. I was rejected as a cloud engineer, I am now a cloud technical architect … take that world! Besides, when you are feeling down. Remember this - Yahoo! rejected Google, KFC rejected Jack Ma, and we wouldn’t have Star Wars today if George Lucas had given up on the 7th time. :)

What should I do if I have sent over 100 resumes online and haven‘t even got one on site interview? I graduated from cs but without any industry experience. I got only 2 phone screens and one of them the recruiter thought I worked at Amazon before.

I used to think that rejection was the worst thing that can happen to you, now I see it differently.
After being turned down you must stand up even feeling badly and sad, but most important you have got to learn something, otherwise it would not worth at all if you didn't do it.
    Thank you for your advices

If you ever been ghosted or rejected, it ain't your fault. It's the company or the person that turned you down. They hating on you because of your face. It's as simple as that.

I wanted to be STEM person when I subscribed. Math has gotten too hard, and I despise it. It feels like being in stem and not doing math is not an option. I still love you videos because they are compatible with most jobs. Great vid!

I see rejection as blessing. I always question what kind of hell are you going to put my mental self through for money. Most likely turn out as japanese say "Karoshi". The best path. If I had choice why can't I live in the 1990s forever. LOLs.

Thank you so much for this video! As a Japanese person who moved to the States a year ago, this kind of advice on how to approach things more diplomatically/ what phrases to use is really helpful for me. Keep up the great work 💘
