As a data scientist who also does "traditional" IT, I would say tech is the new rat race and you really need to think if constantly upgrading just to be employable is what you want in the long run.
It is heavily reliant on your ability to keep learning and demonstrating a good attitude.
Java and Cybersecurity roles along with, network engineer, VLSI, and networking roles are always hiring. So are, product management, Salesforce, and PPM type of roles. Core fields are great but they just aren't that much in demand. Always choose IT or CS or Electrical/Networking and learn to code in Java or Javascript. You are pretty much guaranteed to get a high-paying job. Data/Machine learning/Crypto was also up and coming but the pay, career growth, job opportunities, competition and work-life are much worse than traditional coding roles. If you like data and math, try for quant roles and keep C++ as a backup.

Although it's hard, but stay true to your self, a lot of times, self validation and financial pressure can really lead people to make the wrong career decisions. It is not easy, but once you figure out a way to stay true to yourself, it doesn't matter what you do and what other people thinks as things will fall in place

Self awareness is key
One thing I count a lot to enter I the company is the team that I will work with are friendly and the people in the team respect each other. Because when I did my internship during the college, my colleagues was so stressful with each other and they scream with each other. For me, I saw that and I didn't want that for my life.
For me iam IT fresh graduate i want to apply a job in the tech industry but i dont have that confidence that my knowledge and skills is not enough for me to have a job. I'll be honest i didnt focus on my programming classes in college so now i am restudying some programming languages specially front end which my dream job.

Great points. These questions are especially relevant as future roles become more specialized, or you discover you prefer optimizing on different parts of your job/career (product, engineering, leadership, biz dev, etc.).

Hi Mayuko, thank you for the great video! You are so right about the importance of both being and feeling valued by your company and your team.
I would also add that, especially if you are new to the workforce and/or starting a new career (in tech or otherwise): It's ok if you make a "mistake" and pick a company/organization that doesn't work out for you the first time.
It's more important that you find a company that you enjoy working for, and a job that offers you growth, rather than just trying to "stick it out".
A few weeks, or even a couple months, of "gap time" on your resume won't hurt you as much as years of stagnation and misery in a job you that doesn't challenge you in a company that doesn't value you.

I always ask about risk appetites and resistance to change. Just trying to avoid "we have always done it this way." & "Too hard, too much work, lets just leave it that way." I just like the ever changing nature of tech.

I studied a bachelor of law degree, but decided to go into tech. Im about to graduate with 2nd bachelor in June, in business informatics
and guess what, it was STRESSFUL. The years of classes didnt feel anything close to "exciting", but I saw it through till the end because I had to "make the 2nd chance work out", as I was on scholarship abroad in Germany, graduated with 3.6 GPA.
Coming from South Africa, it was a good opportunity for me.
But after all that, ive decided my first option is Tax consultancy and accounting.
Yes i know, boring, but the numbers dont move, and they make sense.
8 years, 3 countries, 2 degrees and 3 languages later, calculator and spreadsheets, tax legislation...the only "peace" i can imagine;that and a book by the lake on weekends. No more big cities for me.
Never thought id think this way at this age.
...let me get back to debugging this code.

These are additional questions that might prove useful: Is this company's technology/intellectual property actually interesting/exciting? Is that interest/excitement going to be enough to motivate me for years? Is this company's main business that of developing software products for its customers? Or is software development a secondary function? Does this company's technology help thousands/millions of people? If I create features/products in this company will my work be beneficial to large numbers of people (or will they benefit a sector that I personally care about)?

I'd love to know more about the different tech jobs in all the industries and the pace of work. Like you mentioned, it moves fast especially if the company is tech product based. Comparing startups, banks, government, mid size, large size - what are all the choices and what's the inside scoop? I think I just joined a team/department in a large size company that feels like a startup and I'm drowning

Where do you think a new grad should work in to maximize growth - Silicon Valley or Seattle? I have an offer from a company that have offices in both area and the pay is the same. The HQ is in the valley. Are the opportunities in the valley worth the high COL? Is it better to choose Seattle since the tech scene is huge and it have a low COL? What are your thoughts?

hey, I'm a computer science student and i've been really thinking this for a long time, I'm a 2nd year, I part time as a fullstack-ish at a mid sized company, I'd love to migrate to big size companies, but I fear that a degree would dictate whether I'd be accepted or not, Umm my soft skills are also not on point :( so need help on that too.. May the algorithm finds this content-worthy ^^
Not sure where you're based, but in my experience in the US, experience is more important than anything else. My experience in Korea, however, is different. Here, the school you went to matters and potentially any certificates you've acquired. It varies from place to place.
That said, maybe try to find a mentor at your part time job. Specifically look for a mentor that could help you with soft skills. Communication is key. Bad communication leads to be understanding of requirements leads to a bad product.
The fact that you're thinking about these sorts of things and seeking help suggests you're on the right track. Whatever the path ends up being, I'm sure you'll figure it out :) Good luck
@@DictatorDraco yeah, i'm from Philippines, a southeast asian country where degree and certificates could also mean a lot part of the reason is that state colleges here is free so, there's no reason to not have one, but I just don't really feel it being useful, and i actually have a mentor he taught me how to create web apps using node js and react, and got hired as a junior half-way through enjoy doing it ,being paid(minimum T.T), buttt i could tell he also don't have good soft skills, I've asked our product manager to teach me but i think he is just a natural in communicating and couldn't really boil his skills down to what i could understand.
andd just realized that exploring the industry and improving my skills while in college is actually the way to go,

Hmm, devops is pretty broad. I guess it depends on what specifically you want to get into. It also depends on your learning style. I'm usually a read documentation + play with something kinda guy, so I usually just try to figure out what kinds of documentation or blogs to search for. You may want to start with CI/CD - Continuous Integration and Continuous Delivery. You can find pretty good definitions of each on Wikipedia, and there are blogs to help distinguish the two, if needed. Before that, you'll need a solid foundation in git branching strategies and shell scripting. There's lots of blogs about branching strategies, and shell scripting has been around long enough that you can find all sorts of resources. Next, you'll want to learn about testing. You'll want to learn about the different kinds of testing - unit, integration, functional, smoke, regression. Since you're doing Node, you'll want to read up on Chai / Mocha / Jasmine / Jest. Personally, I use Jest, but all of those testing systems are excellent. Pick whichever seems most appealing to you. They can also be used for front-end testing. Once you've got branching, shell, and testing down, you can dive into CI itself. The unfortunate bit is that CI isn't really a unified thing in terms of technology. Travis CI and Circle CI are two of the biggest, but I'm a fan of Gitlab CI. You can install a Gitlab server with its CI component on your machine for free, and Gitlab CI isn't too terribly different from Travis or Circle. CD is kind of an extension of CI, but you'll want to read up on packaging and delivery systems. For example at my company, we create our own Debian packages for deployment. We have a (in-house built) centralized command and control server for sending commands to all of our client hardware. The CI builds our software, creates the Debian packages, puts them up on Google Cloud Storage, generates a temporary download URL, sends it to the command and control server, and the command and control server tells all of our client hardware systems to download the package from the download URL and install it. It's smooth~ It feels really cool seeing it all work.
