  • Hello everyone!
Today's video is about my journey into Software Engineering. I plan on making more videos for specific tips on college, studying Computer Science, interviewing, etc., but I wanted to illustrate my journey into Software Engineering and through college and onwards that got me to where I am today! Hope you like it!

Guys, here's a pro advice: Build your own website and start showcasing your projects there. You can build your own projects, no need to have clients or work as a freelancer or intern at a company. This is how I got my foot in the door and it really works. Employers see you differently when you have your own website and post articles about what you do. Even if you have no Computer Science degree (I don't).

Hello Mayuko!! This video really inspired me to continue my CS major with even more passion than before. I go to college in SF, and am currently taking a Data Structures class. There are definitely many times where I feel like I'm not cut out for this major bc I tend to compare myself to everyone else and I tend to see myself as a slower learner or someone that hasn't accomplished as much. However, I'm still just as determined to learn as much as I can about all the different programming languages and hopefully land an awesome job like you! Also going to be tuning in to your videos for motivation & inspiration! ❤️

nice video! was wondering how you went about leaving intuit for another opportunity, what's the usual procedure/way to do it gracefully. Also for a future video it would be great to talk about what it's like to live/work in the valley, what the culture is like and stuff. Everyone I've talked to about it have had conflicting experiences.

    • @hellomayuko
      @hellomayuko  7 лет назад +9

Hi Tom! Thank you! It's common courtesy (maybe even law where I live?) to give 2 weeks notice to the job that you're leaving. When I left Intuit I knew about a month ahead of time so I let my manager know as soon as I made the decision to leave so that any handoff of knowledge or projects could be done thoughtfully and easily! Also because of weekly check-ins with my manager about my career goals, my decision to leave a position or company usually is not a big surprise - my managers in the past have been extremely supportive about my decision!
I can totally see how there could be conflicting opinions! I'd be happy to talk about this in a future video (and offer up another opinion, my own), thanks for the idea!

I am a software engineering undergrad, and I didn't have a choice to decide what I wanted to do because of family reasons and for the few two and half years of my degree, I absolutely resented studying software. Then in the second half of my third year, I stopped thinking about why I was studying and instead focused on what computer science was all about and honestly, I found it so interesting that it makes me angry that I didn't take it seriously. Obviously, it's a struggle because all the concepts I was supposed to learn in the first few years, I have to learn now and I am not at all good enough for someone who is starting their fourth year next sem, but despite that, once I really familiarized with the subject and understood it's impact, I found out that I really wanted to do this, to be good at it.
I have an assignment due that I am struggling with and came upon your channel while looking for some motivation and it made me happy that I am still here and didn't give up. I know it might take me a few semesters longer to graduate than the usual four, cause I am still learning the basics, I had to start all over, but I am so determined to do it. I really really want to be a software engineer, and I really want to learn and watching this video reinforced me with some inspiration so thank you. I hope I can reach the success that you did.

As a first year cs student at 25. I would say the most important thing to remember is every day you are fulfilling your vision or your goal. If you start to think about how long it’s going to take or how your behind before you even began then your only setting yourself up in that state of mind. If the timing thing really bothers you then remind yourself how fast the last few years flew by. Then remind yourself again ,how in no time you’ll fulfill your vision or goal/dream

I went to UCSD also, in the early 1990’s, with the opposite method and couldn’t land a job after graduation. Please use your natural verbal skill, very EF Hutton ( "When E. F. I don't know if you're gonna see this. But I was a little lost as I also became a CS major in college after a year of trying bio/chem, this video really helped me solidify my choice in going towards Software Engineering. Thank you. :). Really like this channels content!

I am 30 years old and made it into a trainee programme at a huge IT outsourcer. Not much internship experience before, just one as a dev in python.. Now everything will be hard. I will be coding in Java and be an engineer. I used to be a (failed) video editor, not know what to do in my life. I was studying STEM, finished digital media with a bsc and now the software eng life chose me. I am taking udemy classes to fill up gaps and learn the patterns and OOP and stuff.

This was an amazing video! I'm a recent mechanical engineer graduate and just like you said, keeping a social life plus orgs and demanding classes was the hardest thing ever. But anyway I'm currently still applying and interviewing for my first career position. Its hard, lots of rejection lol but this video motivated me to keep on pushing and get that job I deserve. Thank you, Mayuko. Hopefully, our engineering paths cross one day.

Thank you mayuko, I am a student in Finland, and just get refused from many companies for internship. your videos, somehow, gave me some encourage and advice. But I still feel confused for what to learn, front-end or back-end, mobile or web. I tried all of them, but there is not much feeling until now.

Thank you for sharing your story! I have been really worried about majoring in computer science since last year because I didn't know what I really want to do. I love art but I also love technology, sadly my high school doesn't have much tech classes so I was afraid that I wouldn't get a job in the future.
However, your story makes me a bit more relieved because it doesn't seem like it is never too late to learn about programming/computer science!
    Thank you so much~

Randomly stumbled on your videos and I love what you're doing! I went to undergrad in a school that's over 50% computer science majors so I tried getting into it, but felt discouraged because I felt like everyone else was just so much better at it. It wasn't until my senior year that I realized that it didn't matter and that I should follow my interests. At that point it would've taken too long to complete a cs major so I took whatever cs courses I could and finished my BS in math in 2016. I'm currently pursuing a masters in cs and low-key stressing over internships, but hearing about your journey has somehow made it all a bit better. Maybe it's also because you're a fellow Japanese-American.
Anyways, I hope you keep creating content like this! #subscribed

Your story as a freshman is very similar to mine, except it took me 2 years to switch to computer engineering instead of a semester. I spent my first year doing a foundation program where we must take English, math and computer subjects if we don't get a minimum score in ACT exam, without allowing us to take courses related to our accepted major like chemistry or calculus, it was a total non sense program that was modified for the best the year after for the freshmen, where they don't have to waste two semesters - yah, how lucky am I-. Next year I was in a pre-pharmacy program taking first-year pharmacy subjects, and upon our performance - GPA- mainly and other stuff we will be accepted to the pharmacy program or else rejected, my performance in 3 chemistry courses was horrible and I was rejected, I went through hard time then not knowing what to do, first thing I thought about is that I want to switch to engineering, then my friend told me she wants to do computer engineering, and I thought about it and saw it the most major suitable for me.

Hey Mayuko, recently I stumbled upon your videos. It's good to see you succeed. It is much better to see you succeed publicly! Computer stuff - specifically all the programming aspects - are deemed very unpopular by the female gender most of the time. This is mostly due to simply not knowing what exactly the job is. So thanks for showcasing your whole way into this scene and explaining what it's all about. Keep doing what you're doing and enjoy it!
