- My engine was pumpin steam
And I was ridin at you hard and fast
I was burnin down the rails, tryin to heat the way
Haulin ass and ridin up the track
And laughing at the conductor
Who was tellin me my coal, would never last
But when the fire in my boiler
Up and quit before I came
Ain't no empty cellar
It's a gone dead train
Once was at a time when I could
Mama shake em dry
(?)
Waitin at the station
With a heavy loaded sack
Savin up and holdin just to spill
Shootin my supply through my demon's eye
Instead of holdin for the time, I hope I will
Yeah it's a gone dead train
You got to help me to learn
Gone dead train
You got teach it to learn
There ain't no easy way
When your daily runs a downhill pull
And there ain't no easy day
Wishin for some jelly roll hole
Ain't no switch been made
To make your juicy lemon find
A spring to run a dry well full

Lots of misinformation here. The writers are Jack Nitzsche and Russ Titelman. The first recording was in 1968 for the film "Performance", but not released until 1970. Original lead vocal was by Randy Newman. It remains the definitive version.
Lots of versions of this song out there. I've yet to hear a bad one. Izzy can play, can't he?
Excuse it is a great album -and HAD great songs on it.Sorry for those who don’t “ get “ the great songs on the album -oh well!!!!!!
Just dug it out from the attic and played it all through. Still sounds great.
izzy's Awesome!
Great version. Love it from 'Performance' soundtrack, but, alas, no vid of that one...
No, but I have to admit I've owned that album since it came out and I never realised what the song was about!!
@Scrapod Nope! That's Izzy's live version of "Battleship Chains." (Georgia Satellites)
This is closer to the Randy Newman version than to the Crazy Horse rendition. Cleverly worded song about male impotence - written by Jack Nitzsche. I agree that the tempo is perhaps slightly wrong on this - a little too hurried but it is still good. Izzy always provides some good rockin' music.
Good pics but at 2:21 is not Izzy.
Nope, but it's lonely out there.. maybe my favorite lp ever, that 1st Crazy Horse lp
@fanofprotopic no way, I've owned the original Crazy Horse album since 1971! It has some other really great tunes as well. NMB
@sa6o9025 It's out-of-print - you might try eBay or Amazon
i do i love it
@fanofprotopic
Isn't that the original version?I first heard the song on Crazy Horse eponymous album
@SaintDrizzly Ah! I thought I recognised that!
Apparently.
Never knew about that one.
Can you up it to RUclips?
Thanks!
Sounds like the Bintangs version from 1975.
rock & roll :)))))))
rock amo
....I dont know why but this song reminds me of "Nightrain"
1:21 when can i find this book !?!?!
Is the last bit of this song the same song?
No disrespect intended to Izzy, but if you like this song, you OWE it to yourself to hear the original definitive Crazy Horse (Danny Whitten vocal) version from the Crazy Horse self titled Crazy Horse album.
@SaintDrizzly tnx dude ;)
am I the only person who owns the country funk version of this song by Crazy Horse?
!
!
!
@AceInTheWhole94 I would guess because it's a load of BS, not sure if that's true but I did hear that somewhere. But not 100% sure, if anyone could clear up if it's accurate or not that'd be helpful, but not got a definate answer, sorry man.
This is a Randy Newman song...
If I am not wrong, the Crazy Horse version is the original recorded back in 1969.. and THE definitive version!
Nazareths version is better.
the tempo is all wrong.
