    Good morning. Your walk way with the mulch is coming along. I think it is now starting to look neat and tidy. I don't have Bermuda grass but I can feel your frustration with it. Enjoy your harvest and the rest of your day.

    I've definitely made numerous gardening mistakes and do learn from them. I've used cardboard under mulch and it's worked pretty well. I've heard so many mixed opinions about landscape fabric but did use it to suppress a very invasive weed in a wet area. I covered it with river pebbles. It's been 3 years and some of the weed has come through but for the most part it has stayed suppressed.

    Wow, that was a lot of hard work! Looks good and thanks for the tips regarding the edging you got from Home Depot. That looked a lot easier to install than the stuff I've been using. Glad to see you were able to harvest some eggplant and peppers from your garden. All of the vegetables I planted were a big fail this year. After hurricane Beryl hit, they were either blown over or looked like a steam roller ran over them. I pulled them all up and planted zinnias and sunflowers to enjoy later in the season in their place. Those gladiolas are beautiful.

    Thanks for sharing your do-overs, Amanda. I love that you're not a perfectionist! I struggle with researching too much, trying too much, and sometimes getting so overwhelmed that I do too little too late. Jumping in with what we already know and learning more as we go is a healthier and more productive approach. I'm working on it. 😁
    Oh, I scored some half-priced mandevilla recently, really big ones on wooden trellises, and I'm going to try to overwinter them. Wish me luck!

    Amanda, anytime there is a buildup of dirt or mulch on top of weed barrier, the weeds will grow on top of the barrier. The roots will start growing into the barrier and is hard to get off the top. You will actually still have the same problem cardboard or not as long as mulch is breaking down and wind blows or birds drop seed unto the top of the barrier. As you mentioned, if you weed before they can get a hold then it won’t be as bad.

    I don't even try to cover Bermuda. I just dig it out. Not my favorite thing to do, but I don't think I would ever be rid of it in my flower beds for paths if I tried to suppress it. Bermuda is the most invasive weed in my yard. My mistakes this year: planting several hostas in an area that in previous years was shady but is not now since the neighbors to my west lost at least one tall tree and a few large limbs in late summer storms last year. It greatly affected the amount of sunlight in my side yard. Not necessarily a bad thing, but I've had to dig up some plants and replace with sun lovers instead of shade. I also planted a couple of daylilies that someone shared with me. They did great but were totally intertwined with some sort of weedy grass. The daylilies came right out and were left for waste management to pick up. I have enough weeds without someone elses!

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  Месяц назад

      It’s the worst!! Mine goes down over 15inches so digging it up is not an option!

    My biggest mistake this season was using donated crape myrtle branches to help fill the bottom of a tall raised bed. I had sprouts coming up everywhere! Once all the veggies petered out, I had to dig all the branches up! Oops! 🤦‍♀️

    my big goof was thinking if I cover my small area with pavers that I made from concrete with a form and cemented them in, I'd create an old world cobble- like walking surface and I'd have no issues. Wrong. Eventually the cement cracked away from the pavers due to ground shifting and weeds sprouted with a wild form of purslane being the worst I cringe everytime I hear you're planting purslane! Plus everyplace the cement stayed intact, small amounts of soil collects and weed seeds drift in from above.
    So in other words, I'm constantly having to deal with either pulling weeds or spraying them with 20% vinegar. Just another day in the life of a gardener!

    I'm going back in with that same edging except I got the one from Lowes that has the scallops on top. It is working to hold the mulch in place. I fight with the Bermuda grass too. Instead of trying to pull it, I spray it. You can pull that stuff but it'll just break off and leave the runners and come back LOL! Yours is looking really good, take your time, buy LOTS of mulch :D

    Yep, I know this struggle with grass, especially Bermuda, very well. In the future, buy a good pro-quality woven ground cover, then skip the mulch. Like pro nurseries do. I know, the mulch is prettier and it looks more "green", but it doesn't work, unless you use chemicals, like you say you're going to use. Bermuda loves mulch. It will grow in the smidgen of soil under the mulch and spread all over it. In fact, it loves wet cardboard. I put down cardboard, then a thick layer of fresh mulch and 2 years later you can't tell I ever put down cardboard and it's covered in grass. No more cardboard for me. I'm a senior and I don't have the time or physical energy for all this grass. I'm using just nursery quality woven landscape fabric to repair my wasted efforts. It's not that expensive, in fact it's cheaper in the long run, and it works.

    • @shesamadgardener
      @shesamadgardener  Месяц назад

      Oh man! The cardboard has worked great on the Bermuda in areas that I did 4 years ago so fingers crossed it works this time too!

    The two things I most dislike in the garden are Bermuda grass and plastic weed cloth barrier. The weed cloth barely suppresses weeds, it deteriorates, and it is horrible to remove. I prefer layers of cardboard covered by heavy layers of mulch. Mulch and compost work miracles. Do other people have better experiences with weed cloth? I know there are reasons to plant Bermuda grass, but I hate how the runners invade garden beds.
